Do not try to bypass the passcode or guess passwords. First decide whether you need specific data, a memorialized social profile, account closure, or a usable device; each outcome has a different process and some actions cannot be undone. Preserve the phone and signed-in devices, gather proof of death and your legal authority, then use the provider’s official deceased-user procedure.
Start by protecting the data
Write down the exact outcome you need
Separate these four goals before touching the device:
- Recover particular data: photographs, documents, email, contacts, cloud files, or an account archive.
- Memorialize a social profile: preserve a public profile without taking over the account.
- Close or delete an account: stop future access and remove stored content where the provider permits it.
- Reuse the physical phone or tablet: erase it and set it up for another person.
An iPhone passcode, an Apple Account, an email account, a cloud-drive account, and a social profile are separate access problems. Permission to handle one does not automatically unlock the others.

Keep the phone and other signed-in devices safe and charged if practical. Do not factory-reset them, trade them in, remove their SIM or eSIM unnecessarily, or make repeated passcode attempts while you are deciding what to preserve. Apple states that a passcode-locked device is protected by passcode encryption and that Apple cannot remove the lock without erasing the device. Erasure can permanently remove local data that has not synchronized elsewhere.

Look for a legacy plan or written instructions
Check estate papers, password-manager emergency instructions, notebooks, and the person’s records for an Apple Legacy Contact access key or other provider-specific directions. A legacy designation may provide a defined route to selected data, but it does not turn a device passcode into a recoverable password.
Assemble documents before contacting providers
Prepare digital and paper copies of:
- the deceased person’s full name and the relevant email address, phone number, username, or account identifier;
- a death certificate or other accepted proof of death;
- your government-issued identification;
- documents showing executor, administrator, heir, immediate-family, or other legal authority;
- any Legacy Contact access key, will provision, court order, or estate correspondence.
Exact requirements vary by provider, country, and account type. A provider may ask for additional documentation or decline to release content.
Choose the route before taking an irreversible action

If the estate still needs evidence, ask whether the provider can preserve the account or supply an archive before requesting deletion. Do not submit a closure request merely because it is the easiest form to find.
Why an unlocked account may not unlock the phone
Cloud access and hardware access use different protections. A provider may verify your authority and release selected Apple Account, Google, or Microsoft data while the physical iPhone remains encrypted by its passcode. Conversely, having an unlocked phone does not establish that you are authorized to obtain every cloud account or private message.
Do not use password-reset forms while pretending to be the deceased person, and do not repeatedly guess a PIN. Third-party “unlock” or forensic-extraction services cannot substitute for provider authorization; the protections described by the providers may be defeated only by erasing the device, and the legality and reliability of other methods are not established.

Apple Account, iPhone, and iPad
Use an Apple Legacy Contact when one exists
Apple describes its Legacy Contact process as the easiest and most secure way to share access to certain Apple Account data after death. The designated person uses the access key and proof of death to request access through Apple’s Digital Legacy process. The key grants only the categories of data Apple makes available through that program; it is not the deceased person’s password and does not authorize every service or third-party account.
Request access when there is no Legacy Contact key
Apple requires and verifies legal documentation for deceased-account requests. Depending on the country or region, that generally includes a death certificate and may require a court order or alternative documentation. Requirements can differ even within the same product family, so follow the current Apple Support procedure for the account-holder’s location and submit only the documents requested.

Understand the iPhone passcode limit
Apple’s official support statement, published August 24, 2026, is explicit: “Please note that devices locked with a passcode are protected by passcode encryption, and Apple can’t help remove the passcode lock without erasing the device.” Account access and a Legacy Contact key do not change that hardware rule.
If the family ultimately wants to reuse the device, first complete any data requests and confirm that needed photographs, notes, messages, and files exist elsewhere. The device must then be erased and restored before another person can set it up. Erasing can remove content that was never synchronized or backed up.

Google Account
Request content before requesting closure
Google says immediate family members and representatives can request account closure and that, in certain circumstances, it may provide account content after careful review. It does not provide the deceased person’s password or other login credentials.
If Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, or another Google service contains material the estate needs, submit the content request first and wait for the provider’s response. Google states that once it closes the account, it cannot process a later request for the account’s contents. Treat closure as an irreversible decision, not as the first step in an access request.
Do not confuse Inactive Account Manager with recovery
Google’s Inactive Account Manager is a planning feature for an account holder to designate future access or deletion preferences. It is not a password-recovery shortcut for relatives after death. Look for evidence that the person configured it, but do not assume that a family relationship alone activates it.
Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, and other personal services
Expect formal legal process
Microsoft says it is generally unable to provide information to people who are not account holders. For personal email, OneDrive, and other personal-account content, Microsoft must first be formally served with a valid subpoena or court order to consider release; even then, it may be unable to provide the content.
Microsoft identifies regional exceptions, including distinct procedures for Germany and China. The account holder’s location matters, so verify the current instructions for that jurisdiction and account type rather than relying on a process used in another country.

Check retention timing promptly
Microsoft’s support information says personal accounts expire after two years of inactivity, while Outlook.com and OneDrive accounts are frozen after one year and their stored data is deleted shortly afterward. These retention rules can change, so check the current official page before acting. If the account may be near a retention deadline, tell the estate professional and ask Microsoft what preservation options, if any, are available.
Facebook profile
Memorialization is different from account access
Meta’s published explanation describes memorialization as the default after Facebook learns of a death. A memorialized profile can preserve posts and connections without allowing someone else to sign in as the deceased.
A legacy contact may be able to manage limited profile features, such as pinning a post, and may be able to download an archive of photos, posts, and profile information if the user enabled that permission. The contact cannot log in as the deceased or read private messages.
Meta explains that private messages involve the privacy of everyone who exchanged them and generally cannot be turned over without affecting those people’s privacy. The detailed explanation cited here is from 2017; confirm the current Facebook Help Center form, eligibility rules, and available archive options before submitting a request.
X account
X allows an authorized estate representative or a verified immediate family member to request account deactivation. The requester must provide the information X asks for, identification, and a copy of the death certificate. X expressly says it cannot provide account access to anyone, regardless of their relationship to the deceased.

Therefore, treat an X request as a deactivation process, not a way to obtain direct messages, drafts, or login credentials. Preserve any publicly available material lawfully before deactivation if the estate needs it for records.
Legal authority, privacy, and geography
No single rule determines what a relative may obtain. The deceased person’s instructions, your role in the estate, the account-holder’s jurisdiction, the provider’s terms, encryption, and the privacy rights of other people all affect the result.
Provider help pages describe administrative procedures; they are not a substitute for local estate-law advice. Ask an executor, probate solicitor, or other qualified estates professional whether you are authorized to request content, whether a court order is needed, and how local law treats digital assets. This is especially important when family members disagree, the will limits access, or the account contains business, medical, financial, or third-party information.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Guessing the passcode: stop attempts and preserve the device; Apple’s stated remedy for a locked device is erasure.
- Resetting before checking backups: confirm that needed data is synchronized or archived before wiping hardware.
- Closing an account first: request content or preservation before closure, particularly for Google.
- Submitting a password-reset request as the deceased: use the provider’s deceased-user, estate, or legal channel instead.
- Assuming social memorialization gives private access: Facebook limits legacy-contact functions and X refuses account access.
- Relying on a procedure from another country: requirements and legal documents are region-specific.
- Paying an “unlock” service: no evidence establishes that such a service can lawfully or reliably defeat the protections described here.
A practical sequence for the estate
- List every device, email address, cloud service, and social profile separately.
- Mark each item as data recovery, memorialization, closure, or device reuse.
- Secure and charge devices; do not erase them or keep guessing passcodes.
- Search estate records for a Legacy Contact key, Inactive Account Manager instructions, or written wishes.
- Collect proof of death, identity, account identifiers, and documents establishing authority.
- Ask the relevant provider about preservation and data delivery before requesting deletion or closure.
- Submit the official form or legal request for each provider, keeping copies of every submission.
- Consult a local estates professional when the provider requires a court order, the jurisdiction is unclear, or relatives dispute authority.
- Only after data decisions are complete, close accounts or erase devices that the family intends to reuse.
Planning ahead for your own accounts
Account holders can reduce this problem by recording the location of important accounts, naming an Apple Legacy Contact where appropriate, configuring Google’s Inactive Account Manager, documenting device passcode and backup arrangements in a secure estate plan, and stating whether accounts should be preserved, memorialized, transferred where lawful, or deleted. Share instructions through a trusted legal or password-management process rather than leaving passwords in an exposed note.
