If an Xbox gift card, download code, or gifted digital game has not arrived, first determine what was purchased and who sold it. Then sign in to the Microsoft account used for the transaction, open Order history, and check the order status before buying anything again. A Microsoft Store purchase is investigated by Microsoft; a purchase from another retailer is investigated by that retailer.
Start by identifying the missing item
People often use “Xbox gift card” to describe two different transactions. The recovery steps are not the same, so do not begin by searching only for an email.
A Microsoft or Xbox gift card, balance code, or download code
A gift card or code is redeemed to a Microsoft account. It may add account balance or grant a specific game or other digital content. The transaction can be a code purchased for yourself or a code intended for someone else. The seller is responsible for delivering the code, while Microsoft provides the account and redemption system.
A gifted digital Xbox game
A digital game gift is a separate transaction type. The buyer purchases the game as a gift for a recipient, rather than sending a general-purpose balance code. Microsoft’s digital-gifting process and a retailer’s process can differ, and the available official guidance does not establish a universal delivery time, recipient-email requirement, or resend control. Do not assume that buying a game automatically generates a gift card.

Why the distinction matters
A missing code is normally resolved through the seller that issued it. A Microsoft Store game purchase should appear in the buyer’s Microsoft Order history. A retailer’s order may not appear in Microsoft Order history at all. Checking the wrong place can make a completed purchase look missing.
Confirm which seller took the payment
Look at the payment notification, receipt, bank or card statement, and the website or app where checkout occurred. Classify the order as one of these:

A retailer purchase remains the retailer’s responsibility even when the code will ultimately be redeemed on Xbox. Microsoft’s code guidance directs customers to the retailer when the wrong code was purchased; the same seller-first principle applies when a retailer’s paid delivery has not arrived.

- Sign in to Microsoft Order history. Use the Microsoft account that made the purchase, not necessarily the account currently signed in on the console. Families often have separate accounts, and a parent may have paid while the recipient uses a different Xbox profile.
- Check other Microsoft accounts if the order is absent. Search the account used for the receipt, confirmation message, or payment authorization. If a work, school, or secondary personal account was used, inspect that account’s Order history instead.
- Allow for a short posting delay. Microsoft Support states: “Recent purchases may take a few minutes to appear.” That is a processing notice, not a guaranteed delivery deadline. Refresh Order history after a short interval and avoid placing a second order while the first one is unresolved.
- Open the order details. Save the order number, item name, purchase date, account identifier, total, and any receipt or confirmation. These details are needed for either Microsoft or a retailer to trace the transaction.
Not seeing an item is not proof that the payment failed. It can mean the wrong account is open, the order is still being posted, or the purchase was made through another seller.

Understand the status shown for the order
| Status | Meaning given by Microsoft | What to do |

Status labels describe the transaction’s payment state; they do not establish an email-delivery deadline. Keep a screenshot or downloaded receipt showing the status and timestamp.
If you bought a digital game directly from Microsoft
Microsoft says digital software, including Xbox games, appears in Order history. A confirmed game order that does not appear in the expected library or account should be handled by Microsoft Support.
- Open the completed order in Order history and verify the title, edition, platform, and account.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the console, the Xbox website, or the Microsoft Store. Do not switch accounts while testing availability.
- Check whether the order is a direct game purchase or a gift transaction. A game bought for yourself and a game sent as a gift are different products even when they have the same title.
- If the order is confirmed but the game or gift is missing, contact Microsoft Support. Provide the order number, purchase date, Microsoft account used, payment evidence, and a precise description of what is absent.
Support can distinguish an entitlement problem from a payment or account problem. Explain whether you are the buyer who cannot access a self-purchased game, the recipient who did not receive a gift, or the buyer whose gift was never delivered.

If another retailer sold the code or game
Start with the retailer, not Microsoft. Microsoft generally cannot resend a code, correct a retailer’s recipient address, or confirm a retailer’s internal delivery event.

- Sign in to the retailer account used at checkout and open the order page.
- Check the order number, payment state, item description, delivery method, and destination email or account shown by the retailer. Do not post a full code publicly.
- Search the mailbox and spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders for the retailer’s receipt or delivery message. Use the exact email address shown on the order, but do not infer that every retailer sends codes by email.
- Contact the retailer through its official support channel. State that the paid Xbox code or game gift has not been delivered and ask the retailer to trace the order.
- Include the order number, purchase date and time, account or email used, item name, amount paid, payment authorization or receipt, and the result of your Order history check. Redact full card numbers and passwords.
If the retailer says the code was delivered or redeemed, ask it to identify the delivery record and the redemption investigation process. Microsoft Support may be able to investigate a Microsoft account or redemption issue, but the seller remains the first contact for a missing retailer delivery.
When the missing item is a gift for someone else
Establish who paid and who should receive the content. The buyer’s Order history is usually the starting point for a Microsoft purchase; the recipient’s Xbox account is the account that may ultimately receive a game or balance.
The buyer cannot find the order
The buyer should check every Microsoft account used during checkout and confirm whether the purchase was made through Microsoft or an outside retailer. A recipient cannot fix a buyer-side payment that never posted.
The buyer sees a completed order but the recipient has nothing
Do not purchase a replacement immediately. Record the completed order and contact the seller that processed it. Tell support that the buyer’s charge is completed but the intended recipient has not received the gift. Provide the recipient account or address only through the seller’s secure support process.

The recipient sees a redemption or ownership problem
Confirm that the recipient is signed in to the intended Microsoft account and that the gift was not redeemed on another account. If the order was bought from Microsoft, give Microsoft Support the order number and explain the account relationship. If it was bought elsewhere, ask the retailer to trace delivery first.
What information to prepare for support
A complete first message reduces back-and-forth. Prepare:
- Order number and the exact item name or edition.
- Purchase date, approximate time, and total charged.
- Microsoft account used, or the retailer account and email used.
- Whether the item was a balance gift card, a download code, a self-purchased game, or a gifted game.
- Order status shown: Completed, Redeemed, In progress, or another label.
- Payment confirmation, receipt, or a redacted statement entry.
- Recipient account or delivery address, if the transaction was a gift.
- What you already checked and the exact error or absence you see.
Never send a password, full payment-card number, security code, or an unredeemed code in an ordinary email or public forum. Use the seller’s authenticated support form when one is available.

A second purchase can create two legitimate charges. If Order history says In progress, Microsoft defines that status as a charge that has not yet posted to the payment option; a missing listing is therefore not a safe reason to reorder. First establish the account, seller, status, and payment result.

If a second purchase is unavoidable because of a time-sensitive gift, preserve both order numbers and ask support to document which transaction should be retained. Do not assume that an automatically reversed authorization is the same as a completed refund.
Refunds are conditional
Microsoft says some games and apps bought from Microsoft may be eligible for a refund request through Xbox Order history. Digital goods are generally not returnable unless the offer or applicable law allows it. Eligibility depends on the specific purchase and the current terms; a missing code or a third-party purchase does not automatically qualify.
If you want to request a Microsoft refund, open the relevant Xbox Order history entry and follow the available refund-request path. Describe the delivery problem accurately and keep the request tied to the original order. For a retailer purchase, use the retailer’s cancellation or refund process first. If a payment was unauthorized, report it through the payment provider’s fraud process as well as the seller; do not label an authorized but delayed order as fraud.

What is not established about delivery
Official material available for this issue does not establish one Xbox-wide delivery window, a universal resend button, a required recipient-email format, or one precise redemption flow for every seller and gift type. Retailers may implement different delivery and support procedures. Check the live instructions shown by the seller for the specific order instead of relying on an assumed deadline or feature.
Practical decision sequence
- Write down whether the missing item is a gift card or code, a self-purchased digital game, or a gifted digital game.
- Identify the seller from the receipt or payment record.
- Check the Microsoft account used for a Microsoft purchase and open Order history.
- Read the status: Completed, Redeemed, or In progress.
- Save the order details and proof of payment.
- Contact Microsoft for a Microsoft Store transaction, or the original retailer for a retailer transaction.
- Ask about a refund only through the seller’s applicable process, recognizing that digital-goods eligibility is conditional.
The Bottom Line
Find the original seller and the account used for payment before taking any other action. Check Microsoft Order history and its status, avoid a duplicate purchase while an order is In progress, and send the saved order evidence to Microsoft or the retailer that actually processed the transaction.
