If your ticket names a different station, route, operator or train from the journey you intended, do not assume it is valid. Check the ticket conditions, then contact the retailer that sold it before you travel. The retailer can tell you whether the booking can be corrected or exchanged, what fees or fare difference apply, and whether you need a new ticket.
My train ticket shows a different station: act before boarding
A rail ticket is a contract for the journey printed on it, subject to the fare and railway conditions that apply. Your intention to travel somewhere else does not by itself make the ticket valid for that journey. Compare the ticket with what you meant to book before entering the station or boarding a train.
- Read every journey field. Check the origin, destination, date, route, named train company, and any reserved departure. Station names can be similar, and a ticket may cover a specific terminal rather than every station in a city.
- Identify the fare type. Look for terms such as Advance, Off-Peak, Anytime, a route designation, or a train-specific restriction. The conditions attached to that fare determine whether a correction, change or refund is possible.
- Keep the booking evidence. Save the confirmation email, payment receipt, itinerary, ticket barcode and any messages that show what you selected. Do not delete the original ticket after contacting the seller.
- Contact the seller immediately. National Rail’s wrong-ticket guidance says to tell the retailer who sold the ticket as soon as you realise the mistake because the retailer may be able to resolve it at that point. Ask specifically whether the ticket can be amended or exchanged, the deadline for doing so, and the total additional cost.
- Wait for a clear answer before travelling. A station employee or conductor may not be able to alter a ticket whose conditions prohibit changes. If the retailer tells you to buy another ticket, ask how to request a refund or reimbursement and what evidence is required.
Use the retailer that issued the booking first, even if another railway company operates the train. The seller has the transaction record and can apply the fare’s change and refund rules.

My ticket has the wrong route: what the printed restriction means
A ticket can restrict travel by route, operator or train. For example, it may say that travel is valid only by a named route or train company, or show a reserved service. A different route that appears faster or more convenient is not automatically permitted.

Route printed on the ticket
If a route is specified, ask the retailer or railway staff whether the alternative route is authorized for that fare. Do not rely solely on a journey planner showing the same origin and destination; the planner may display options that are not valid with your ticket.
Named operator or train
A restriction to a particular operator or a reserved train normally means you must use the service identified in the ticket conditions. Missing that train, changing the departure time or boarding another company’s service can require a new ticket unless the operator has issued a specific instruction allowing the change.
Station mismatch within a city
Stations serving the same city are not interchangeable unless the fare conditions say they are. Check the exact station name and, where shown, its three-letter station code. Allow time to correct the booking before going through ticket barriers; travelling to the wrong terminal can leave you without a valid ticket for the rest of the journey.

There is no single rule for every rail ticket. The following distinctions apply to the Great Britain guidance described here; other countries and operators may use different terms.

Advance fares
The National Rail Advance First Class conditions are a specific example, not a universal rule for every Advance ticket. They require changes to be arranged before departure of the first reserved train. The origin, destination and route or train company must remain the same. A change fee and any increase in fare may apply, and the terms expressly state that changes cannot be made on board the train.
Other Great Britain tickets
For other Great Britain tickets, National Rail and the Office of Rail and Road state that a journey may be changeable in line with the ticket conditions and that a fare difference may apply. The exact result depends on the fare, the booking channel and whether travel has begun. Ask the retailer to quote the applicable condition rather than assuming that a flexible-looking ticket is fully flexible.
What to do if you notice the mistake after travel starts
Once you are on a train, the options become narrower. National Rail warns that a passenger who discovers the error after beginning the journey may need to buy another ticket. Customer services may later consider a refund if you provide evidence of the mistake, but the guidance does not guarantee that a refund will be granted.

Explain exactly what the ticket says and where you intended to travel.
- Ask whether the current journey is covered and, if not, what ticket you must buy. Do not conceal the mismatch or wait until an inspection becomes a penalty-fare situation.
- If staff instruct you to purchase another ticket, obtain a receipt and retain the original ticket, booking confirmation and any written instructions.
- Contact the original retailer and the relevant customer-service team promptly after arrival. State the booking reference, the intended journey, when you discovered the error, what staff told you and the cost of the replacement ticket.
- Request a review under the applicable refund or discretionary-compensation process. Present the evidence, but treat approval as uncertain until you receive a decision.
Never alter a digital ticket, obscure a station name or attempt to use a screenshot that omits restrictions. Such actions can create a separate validity problem.

When a different route is caused by disruption
A booking mistake and an emergency route change are different cases. If engineering work, cancellations, severe weather or another major disruption prevents the booked service from running, look for the operator’s current instructions before buying a replacement ticket.
- Check station announcements, the operator’s disruption notices and instructions from railway staff.
- Confirm whether your ticket has been accepted on another operator, a different route or a replacement bus.
- Ask whether the authorization applies to the whole journey or only a specified section.
- Keep screenshots, delay notices, photographs of station displays and receipts if you must pay for an alternative.
National Rail says that during major network disruption passengers are usually allowed to complete their journey by another reasonable route. “Usually” is important: a particular service may still be ticket-restricted, and an operator’s current instruction controls what you can board. Do not apply disruption permissions to an ordinary booking error.
Eurostar and journeys outside Great Britain
Eurostar’s conditions illustrate why operator-specific wording matters. Its terms state that using a ticket for a station other than the station specified requires payment of the appropriate full fare for the additional journey portion. Changes may also be subject to the ticket’s fare conditions, exchange or service fees and any fare difference. This is a Eurostar rule, not a universal rule for all railways.
The National Rail and Office of Rail and Road guidance discussed above concerns Great Britain passenger travel. For a journey elsewhere, consult the issuing retailer, the train operator and the passenger-rights authority for the country involved. Do not assume that a Great Britain route restriction, refund practice or disruption permission applies internationally.

How to contact the retailer effectively
A precise request helps the seller identify the available remedy quickly. Use the channel shown on your confirmation—website account, email, telephone or station ticket office—and provide:
- Booking reference and passenger name
- Exact origin, destination, date and train you intended to book
- What the ticket actually shows, including route, operator and reservation
- Whether the first train has departed or the journey has begun
- Whether you need a correction, an exchange, a cancellation or advice on buying a replacement
- Permission to charge a fare difference, if required, and a request for the full fee before you approve the change
Ask the representative to confirm the outcome in writing. A useful message is: “My ticket shows [printed origin and destination], but I intended [intended origin and destination]. The ticket is [fare type], and travel has [not started/started]. Can you confirm whether it is valid, whether it can be changed, the deadline, and the total fare difference or fee?” Put variable details inside the brackets only when sending your own message; they are not part of a ticket rule.

Boarding first and asking later
For a restricted or reserved fare, boarding another service can leave you liable for a new fare. Contact the seller or staff before departure whenever possible.

Assuming a city name covers every station
Different terminals may have separate ticket validity rules and require an additional transfer. Read the station name exactly as printed.

Changing only the departure time
Even when the origin and destination match, a train-specific reservation can make another departure invalid. Ask whether the reservation must be reissued.
Discarding evidence
Without the original confirmation, payment record or replacement-ticket receipt, it is harder for customer services to assess what happened. Keep the complete record until the case is closed.
Treating a refund as automatic
A permitted exchange, a discretionary refund after travel and compensation for disruption are separate processes. The retailer must apply the rule for the fare and circumstances you actually have.

Bottom line
A different station or route on a train ticket is a validity issue, not a harmless wording difference. Compare the printed details with your intended trip, identify the fare restrictions and contact the retailer before departure. Changes may involve a fee or fare difference; after travel begins, you may need to buy another ticket and request a later review with evidence. If disruption caused the route change, follow the operator’s specific authorization instead of relying on ordinary booking rules.
