If your stock order is rejected, delayed, or still marked pending, check its details and ask your brokerage to confirm its live status before you submit another order. Find out whether any shares filled, whether the order is still active, and whether a cancellation request succeeded. Replacing an order based on an assumption can result in a duplicate trade.
A market order generally seeks prompt execution but does not guarantee a price. A limit order sets a price boundary but may remain unfilled. The right next step depends on what your broker says happened to the original order—not just on the status label you see.
First, find out what happened to the original order
Open the order record in your brokerage account or contact the firm through its official support channel. Before deciding whether to wait, cancel, or replace the order, establish whether it was received, whether it remains active, and whether any part of it executed. A missing confirmation or a status you do not understand is not proof that no trade occurred.

Read the order record
Write down or save the symbol, buy or sell side, quantity, order type, time in force, submission time, and the status currently displayed. Look for any associated message or transaction detail. Brokerage firms use different labels and explanations; there is no universal status code or wording that establishes what happened in every account.

If a label is unclear, ask the firm to explain it for this specific order. In particular, ask whether the order was received, rejected, routed, partially filled, or is still active. Those are questions to put to your broker, not status meanings to infer from a generic label.
Ask about fills and cancellation separately
Ask whether any shares filled, whether the remainder is still open, and whether a cancellation request was accepted and processed. A cancellation request is not the same as confirmation that an order has been canceled. The SEC advises investors to verify execution and cancellation before placing another trade; FINRA has described duplicate executions arising when delayed trade reports and unprocessed cancellation requests leave an investor with a mistaken picture of the order.
Until the firm confirms the original order’s status, avoid treating a new submission as a harmless retry. If the first order is still active—or already filled—a replacement could create a second purchase or sale rather than complete the trade you intended.

Submitting an order does not create a direct connection between you and an exchange. The order travels to the broker, which routes it to a market or another execution venue. Routing and execution take time, and the market price can move in the meantime. The SEC says regulations do not require a trade to execute within a set period of time, so there is no universal number of minutes after which a pending order is necessarily a failed order.

A rejection needs an account-specific explanation
A displayed rejection tells you the order was not accepted as submitted, but the account record and broker’s explanation are needed to determine why. Ask for the specific reason and whether the order reached a market or execution venue. Do not assume a cause from the word “rejected” alone, and do not rely on a rejection code or explanation from another brokerage as if it applied to your firm.
If the firm says an account restriction or trading-session rule is involved, ask what applies to this account and order. The available public guidance does not establish one complete, universal list of rejection reasons, so the broker is the source for the case-specific answer.
A pending order is not a promise of a fill
“Pending” may not tell you, by itself, whether an order is active, awaiting routing, partially filled, or represented by another firm-specific state. Ask the broker to confirm what the label means for your order and whether any shares have executed. Do not infer that the order failed merely because a confirmation has not appeared, or that it will fill just because it remains visible.

How market and limit orders affect the wait
The key trade-off is between seeking execution and controlling the price. A market order generally prioritizes prompt execution at the best available price, but that price is not guaranteed. A limit order specifies a price boundary; it can protect you from buying above or selling below that boundary, but it may remain open if the market does not reach the specified price.

These descriptions are general. The order types and instructions available to you can vary by brokerage. If you are considering changing order type, first make sure you understand whether the original remains live and whether its cancellation succeeded. The choice is a trade-off, not a guarantee that a different order will solve a delay.
Check the trading session before interpreting a delay
Regular and extended-hours trading can have different conditions. Firms may differ in which securities and order types they accept in extended sessions, and liquidity may differ from regular-session conditions. Many firms accept only limit orders during extended-hours trading, but this is not a universal rule for every broker or security.
Ask the firm whether the order was submitted for a session it supports, whether the security is available for trading then, and whether the order type is permitted. Do not assume the same order will be handled identically across sessions or brokerages. The SEC’s extended-hours guidance describes these differences; your brokerage’s rules determine how they apply to your order.

Decide whether to wait, cancel, or replace
There is no safe replacement decision based only on a delay timer. Start with the confirmed status, then consider the order’s conditions and your intent. The following framework helps organize the questions, but it is not a recommendation to trade or change an order.
- Wait: If the broker confirms the order is active and its price and session conditions still match your intent, ask what the firm can tell you about its current handling. A limit order may simply be waiting for the market to meet its limit.
- Cancel: If you no longer want the order, request cancellation through the brokerage’s supported process. Ask whether the cancellation was accepted and processed, and whether any shares filled before cancellation.
- Replace: Only consider submitting a replacement after the firm confirms the original order’s status and the result of any cancellation request. Recheck the symbol, side, quantity, order type, price boundary, and time in force before sending a new order.
If you are unsure what the status means or what a cancellation does, pause and ask the broker rather than submitting multiple changes while the order is unresolved.

Use the firm’s official support channel and provide the order details you recorded. A focused conversation can establish what happened without relying on assumptions about a status label. Ask:
- Did the firm receive the order, and was it rejected or routed?
- Did any shares fill, and is any unfilled portion still active?
- What is the specific rejection reason, if the order was rejected?
- What does the status shown in my account mean for this order?
- Was my cancellation request accepted and processed, and did any execution occur before it?
- Do session or account-specific rules affect this order?
Ask the representative to clarify what action, if any, is needed from you. Public guidance does not establish a universal customer-service response deadline, and broker procedures vary; avoid assuming a firm must resolve every status question within a particular number of minutes.

Review the confirmation if a trade occurred
When you receive a transaction confirmation, compare it with your intent and order record. Check the security, whether you bought or sold, the number of shares, and the transaction details shown. If something appears wrong—or you do not recognize the transaction—contact the broker-dealer promptly and ask it to investigate.
Keep copies of order details, timestamps, messages, cancellation requests, and confirmations while the firm investigates. A clear record can help you explain the sequence of events and identify which order or part of an order is in question.
Escalate unresolved order-handling concerns
If you cannot resolve a concern with the brokerage, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance accepts complaints about order handling, trade execution, and confirmations. A complaint is a way to raise a concern; it does not guarantee a particular result or an investigation update.
