First identify which connection is failing: your phone finding the lock over Bluetooth, the lock joining your home Wi‑Fi, or a Wi‑Fi bridge reaching the lock and the internet. These are separate links with different fixes. Start with power, distance, Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi settings, and setup mode. Reset only after you have followed the instructions for your exact lock model.
Bluetooth normally provides nearby setup and local control. Wi‑Fi, either built into the lock or supplied through a compatible bridge, is what enables internet-based remote access. A lock can therefore work beside you while remote control remains unavailable.
Find the failing connection before changing anything
Watch where setup stops and match the symptom to the path below. This prevents a factory reset when the real problem is a weak signal or a disabled phone permission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|---|
| Phone cannot discover the lock | The phone-to-lock Bluetooth link or the lock’s pairing state is failing. | Phone Bluetooth, distance, batteries, setup mode, and app permissions. | Not necessarily; local Bluetooth can work without internet. |
| Lock is discovered but will not join Wi‑Fi | The lock-to-router connection, Wi‑Fi setting, band, password, or signal is failing. | Working home network, Wi‑Fi enabled on the lock, supported band, password, and coverage. | Yes. Remote control normally needs Wi‑Fi and internet. |
| Lock works locally but the bridge is offline | One of two links is down: Bluetooth between lock and bridge, or Wi‑Fi/internet between bridge and router. | Bridge power, placement, router connection, internet service, and app or firmware status. | Yes, while the bridge path is unavailable. |
TP-Link describes this split in its Tapo documentation: Local Mode uses Bluetooth, while Remote Mode uses Wi‑Fi plus an internet connection. Other products use similar concepts, but names and requirements vary by model.

Do these low-risk checks first
Confirm power and mechanical operation
Replace or recharge the lock’s batteries when the app, keypad, or indicator reports low power. A motor may still move the bolt while radio communication has become unreliable. Use the battery type and polarity specified in the lock’s manual; there is no universal smart-lock battery.
Make sure the door is not putting pressure on the bolt. A lock that cannot complete its normal movement can appear to be offline or fail during setup. Close the door, verify that the bolt moves freely, and then retry communication.
Bring the phone or bridge close
For Bluetooth setup, stand beside the lock with the phone screen awake. Yale’s troubleshooting guidance uses less than 4 metres for Bluetooth-only operation and recommends the same distance, or closer, between its Connect Wi‑Fi Bridge and lock for optimal communication. That distance is Yale-specific guidance, not a guaranteed range for every product.
Remove temporary obstacles where practical. Nuki advises keeping its Bridge within Bluetooth range and avoiding obstructions. Metal doors, appliances, concrete walls, and cabinets can reduce range even when the devices appear close.
Check the phone and app state
- Turn on Bluetooth and keep the lock manufacturer’s app open during setup.
- Install the current app version offered for your phone and sign in to the account that owns the lock.
- Allow the permissions the app requests for discovery. TP-Link says location permission is needed to find and connect its lock during setup, and the Philips DDL240X manual refers to Android Location Service for Bluetooth pairing. Permission names and requirements depend on the app and operating system.
- Temporarily disconnect the phone from another nearby Bluetooth accessory if discovery repeatedly selects the wrong device.
If Bluetooth pairing or discovery fails
1. Put the lock into its pairing state
A new or reset lock may not advertise itself until you explicitly enter setup mode. Follow the model’s button or keypad sequence, then start discovery immediately. TP-Link’s cited Tapo procedure requires the lock to remain in setup mode during the Bluetooth connection step.

Do not copy a timing from another lock. In the Tapo guide, holding the reset button for 5 seconds enters setup mode, while holding it for at least 10 seconds performs a factory reset. Those timings apply to the described Tapo lock only.
2. Retry with a charged lock and nearby phone
Stand within the manufacturer’s recommended range, wake the lock, and repeat discovery after confirming Bluetooth is enabled. If the lock uses a keypad or interior button to wake its radio, perform that step exactly as the manual shows.

3. Check permissions rather than guessing
If the app can see other devices but not the lock, review its Bluetooth and, where required, location permissions. On Android, the system’s Location Service may need to be enabled even when the app calls the feature something else. iOS and Android labels differ, so use the permission prompt and the lock maker’s support instructions for your OS version.
4. Try a second supported phone
The Philips DDL240X documentation lists using an alternate phone as a troubleshooting step. This can separate a lock-side problem from a phone or app problem. Do not pair from two phones at once unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that workflow.
5. Stop and consult the model guide if discovery still fails
Repeatedly pressing reset buttons can erase ownership or calibration data. Record the lock model and generation, battery condition, phone model, and the exact point at which setup stops before contacting support.

If the lock will not join Wi‑Fi
Verify that the home network is actually online
Use another device at the lock’s location to confirm that the network has internet access. If phones and computers also fail, fix the router or service first. A lock cannot complete cloud registration through an offline network.
Make sure the lock’s Wi‑Fi function is enabled
Some locks expose a Wi‑Fi switch, schedule, or power-saving period. TP-Link advises checking whether a scheduled Wi‑Fi-off period is active. A lock can appear correctly configured while its radio is intentionally disabled.
Use the band and password the model supports
Wi‑Fi compatibility is model-specific. The Philips DDL240X manual calls for 2.4 GHz or dual-band Wi‑Fi and includes additional password guidance. Do not assume that a lock supports 5 GHz, enterprise authentication, hidden networks, captive portals, or every special character in a password. Read the exact manual before changing your router.
If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, temporarily separating the bands can make setup easier when the lock requires 2.4 GHz. Restore your preferred router configuration after confirming that the lock has connected.
Improve signal where the lock connects
eufy attributes installation failures in its cited support guidance to weak or unstable Wi‑Fi. Move the router or access point only if practical, remove major obstructions, or improve coverage at the lock’s location. A Wi‑Fi extender is useful only when measurements show poor coverage and the lock supports the extender’s network and security settings.

Re-enter credentials carefully
Type the network name and password exactly as required by the app. A phone may be online through cellular data or a different Wi‑Fi network while the lock is being configured, which can hide a wrong network selection. Keep the phone near the lock until the app confirms that the lock has joined.
Use the maker’s recovery procedure
If the lock repeatedly fails after the network, band, signal, and credentials checks, follow the model-specific recovery steps. The Philips documentation warns that a factory reset requires setup again. eufy also publishes a hard-reset sequence for its cited model; that sequence must not be applied to another lock.
If a Wi‑Fi bridge is offline
A bridge has two independent radio paths. It must communicate with the lock over Bluetooth and communicate with the router and internet over Wi‑Fi. Test both instead of assuming that a working router proves the bridge can reach the lock.
Check bridge power and indicators
Confirm that the bridge is plugged in, its status light matches the normal state in the manual, and its cable or power adapter is secure. If the bridge has been moved, return it to a position near the lock and away from metal enclosures.
Check bridge-to-lock range
Yale recommends less than 4 metres between its bridge and lock for optimal communication. Nuki likewise says to keep its Bridge within Bluetooth range and avoid obstacles. Treat these as product instructions, not a universal distance. A bridge behind a thick wall or inside a cabinet may fail even when the measured distance is short.

Check bridge-to-router Wi‑Fi
Confirm that the home network and internet work at the bridge’s location. Yale’s cited bridge setup uses 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. Other generations may differ, so check the bridge’s own requirements rather than the lock’s specification.
Restart in the order the maker recommends
Yale advises unplugging the bridge and restarting the router. Nuki recommends rebooting its Bridge and router and checking app and firmware versions. Wait for the router to regain internet access before powering the bridge again, then allow the app time to rediscover both devices.
Reset only when the app-guided process calls for it
Nuki describes a Bridge factory reset through its app, while Yale ties reset actions to bridge indicator states. A bridge reset can remove network credentials and require complete reconfiguration. Capture the current Wi‑Fi name, password, account details, and lock ownership information before starting.
Restarting is not the same as factory resetting
A restart removes temporary state while preserving configuration. Unplugging a bridge or rebooting a router is usually reversible. A factory reset erases stored settings, pairing data, or ownership information and sends the device through setup again.
Use a factory reset only when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting flow directs you to do so, or when you are intentionally transferring ownership. Follow the exact duration and button sequence in the current manual. The Tapo example illustrates why: 5 seconds selects setup mode, whereas at least 10 seconds starts a factory reset on that described lock.
What the manufacturer examples establish
| Product documentation | Connectivity details | Specific cautions |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Tapo | Bluetooth Local Mode; Wi‑Fi plus internet Remote Mode; setup mode required for Bluetooth pairing. | Its guide distinguishes a 5-second setup action from a factory reset of at least 10 seconds. Location permission is required during discovery. |
| Yale Connect Wi‑Fi Bridge | Bluetooth communication with the lock and internet-capable Wi‑Fi for remote access. | Yale recommends under 4 metres between bridge and lock, fresh batteries, phone Bluetooth, and restarting the network and bridge. |
| Nuki Bridge | Bluetooth range to the lock and Wi‑Fi range to the router. | Check obstructions, Wi‑Fi signal, app and firmware versions, then use the app-guided bridge reset if required. |
| Philips DDL240X | Bluetooth setup; 2.4 GHz or dual-band Wi‑Fi. | Its manual also calls out power, proximity, Android Location Service, password rules, an alternate phone, and repeating setup after a factory reset. |
| eufy support example | Installation can fail when Wi‑Fi is weak or unstable. | The published hard-reset sequence is model-specific and should not be transferred to another lock. |
When a bridge or network accessory is appropriate
Buy a smart-lock Wi‑Fi bridge only when your exact lock model and generation support that accessory and you want remote access. A bridge does not make an incompatible lock compatible, and it still needs Bluetooth reach to the lock plus Wi‑Fi and internet reach to the router.
Replacement batteries make sense when the lock reports low power or communication becomes intermittent; select the documented type. A Wi‑Fi extender is conditional: use one only after confirming poor coverage at the lock or bridge and verifying that the extender’s network settings are supported.

When to contact support
Escalate with useful evidence instead of repeating resets. Provide the exact model and generation, app and phone operating-system versions, battery status, router band, the distance between devices, indicator-light behavior, and whether local Bluetooth control still works. State whether failure occurs during discovery, Wi‑Fi credential entry, cloud registration, or bridge operation.
Quick Recap
- Contact the lock maker when Bluetooth discovery fails with a charged lock, correct setup mode, and a second supported phone.
- Contact network support when other devices also lose Wi‑Fi or internet access at the lock’s location.
- Contact the bridge maker when the lock works locally but the bridge remains offline after correct placement, reboots, and current app or firmware checks.
- Stop using the lock and seek urgent help if a reset, battery leak, damaged wiring, or mechanical jam affects the physical security of the door.
