If your router stopped working immediately after a firmware update, do not assume it is permanently bricked. Leave it powered if the update may still be running, identify the exact model and hardware revision, then follow only the manufacturer’s recovery instructions for that device. Recovery can require a wired computer, a static IP address, a restoration utility, or a model-specific button sequence. A factory reset may restore access but will erase saved network settings; it does not automatically install an older firmware version.
First, determine what “stopped working” means
A failed update can produce several different symptoms. The router might still route traffic but have a changed wireless name, show a temporary outage while writing firmware, lose its administration page, or fail to boot at all. Treat “bricked” as a description of the symptom, not a diagnosis. The correct recovery method depends on the manufacturer, complete model number, hardware revision, and purchase region.
Record the evidence before changing anything
- Read the label on the router and record the manufacturer, full model number, and hardware revision. Do not rely on a family name such as a product series.
- Write down the current LED pattern: which lights are on, blinking, or dark, and whether the pattern changes after several minutes.
- Check whether a device connected by Ethernet can open the router’s local administration page.
- Note whether the internet is unavailable everywhere or only Wi-Fi is missing. A changed wireless setting after an update is different from a router that cannot boot.
- Keep the update file, the date of the update, and any error message. Support staff can use those details to identify the failed stage.
Recovery support is not universal. For example, the manufacturer’s TP-Link guidance says that most of its routers support firmware recovery but that some older models do not. Read TP-Link’s recovery guidance for the exact device rather than applying a procedure from a similar-looking model.

If the update page is still showing progress, or the manufacturer’s instructions say the router is writing firmware, leave the power connected. Do not switch it off, unplug it, close the update process, or repeatedly press Reset. NETGEAR warns that interrupting an update risks corrupting the firmware and says its update takes a few minutes; the exact wait and LED indications vary by model. Its warning is documented in NETGEAR’s firmware-update instructions.

Use the time specified in your model’s manual or support page. If there is no documented completion time, allow a reasonable uninterrupted period while watching for a stable LED state. Disconnecting power during a flash can turn a recoverable delay into a boot failure.
Choose the recovery path that matches your router
There is no universal “unbrick” sequence. Use this decision framework after the router has had time to finish any update:
| What you can observe | Next action | What you may need |
|---|---|---|
| The administration page opens | Read the model’s failed-update or recovery article and verify the installed file. | Exact model and hardware revision; official regional firmware. |
| The page is unavailable but the vendor documents recovery mode | Follow that model’s rescue or recovery procedure exactly. | Usually a wired Ethernet connection; sometimes a static computer IP, utility, or button sequence. |
| The vendor lists no recovery method for the model | Stop experimenting and contact technical support. | Model label, LED behavior, update date, and error details. |
| A documented procedure does not detect the router or fails | Stop repeating incompatible procedures and escalate to the manufacturer. | Evidence of the steps already attempted. |
A basic Ethernet cable can be useful because some official procedures require the computer to be connected directly to the router. The cable only provides the link; it does not repair firmware, and not every model requires one.
If the administration page still works
Verify the firmware before resetting anything
Open the support page for the exact model and hardware revision. Download firmware only from the manufacturer’s official site for the country or region where the router was purchased. A file for a different revision or region can be rejected, or worse, leave the device unable to boot.

Compare the file name and version shown in the support instructions with the router’s status page. Follow the vendor’s failed-update procedure if one is provided. Do not assume that uploading an arbitrary older file is a safe rollback; some routers accept only particular versions or do not document rollback at all.
Separate a configuration problem from a firmware problem
If the router is reachable locally but devices cannot connect, inspect the wireless name, password, internet connection type, and WAN status. An update may have restored defaults or changed a setting without damaging the firmware. Export a configuration backup only if the interface and the model’s instructions support it.
A factory reset is not a firmware rollback. It restores settings, while a recovery or firmware-upload procedure replaces the firmware image. Reset only when the model’s instructions call for it and you are prepared to configure the connection again.

Prepare the computer and connection
- Disconnect other network paths from the computer, such as Wi-Fi or a second Ethernet adapter, so the recovery traffic goes to the router.
- Connect the computer directly to the router’s designated Ethernet port if the vendor requires a wired connection. Do not route the recovery through a switch, extender, or mesh node unless the instructions explicitly allow it.
- Download the recovery utility or firmware file specified for the exact model and region. Do not rename, unpack, or convert the file unless the vendor says to do so.
- Temporarily set the computer’s IPv4 address only when the model’s procedure specifies a static address. Record the original automatic setting so it can be restored afterward.
Follow the model’s button sequence exactly
Recovery modes often require holding a particular button while reconnecting power, but the button, timing, and LED confirmation differ. A sequence that works on one model can reset another or do nothing. Read the instructions while the router is powered off, then perform one deliberate attempt rather than cycling through guesses.

Example: ASUS Rescue Mode
ASUS’s documented failed-upgrade procedure illustrates how specific recovery can be. For a compatible ASUS model, download that model’s Firmware Restoration utility and the appropriate firmware file, connect the computer directly to the router, set the computer’s IPv4 address to 192.168.1.10 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and enter Rescue Mode by holding Reset while reconnecting power. Use the utility to upload the firmware, wait for completion, and then return the computer’s IPv4 setting to automatic. These values and steps are ASUS-specific; they are not universal router settings.
Example: TP-Link recovery
TP-Link documents more than one recovery method for certain devices. Its example uses an Ethernet-connected computer, a temporary static computer IP address, and a firmware upload while the router is in recovery mode. The address, file format, button timing, and supported models are defined in the manufacturer’s article. Some older TP-Link models are explicitly excluded, so do not substitute a procedure from another hardware revision.
Use the correct firmware file and region
Firmware compatibility is narrower than a product name. Check all of the following before uploading:
- Complete model number, including suffixes.
- Hardware revision printed on the label or packaging.
- Country or regional edition corresponding to where the router was purchased.
- Required file extension and whether the vendor expects a compressed archive or an extracted image.
- Any version-order rule, such as installing an intermediate release before a later one.
Never use firmware downloaded from an unofficial mirror when the manufacturer provides an official file. Do not copy an address, utility, or image from a different model simply because the casing and product names look similar.

When a factory reset is appropriate
Reset only when the exact model’s instructions support it or when technical support directs you to do so. A reset can remove the saved configuration, including the wireless network name and password, internet connection settings, port rules, and other custom options. TP-Link’s guidance explains that when its upgrade instructions call for a reset, previous internet and wireless settings return to factory defaults and the router must be configured again.
Prepare before pressing Reset
- Obtain the ISP username, password, connection type, VLAN details, or other settings your service requires.
- Save the current Wi-Fi name and password if you still have access to them.
- Use a wired computer where possible, because Wi-Fi may disappear as soon as the reset starts.
- Read the model’s reset duration and LED confirmation. Some devices use a brief press for reboot and a longer hold for a full reset.
ASUS maintains a model-specific list for hard factory-reset steps. The hold time and button location should come from that list for your router, not from a generic internet tutorial.

The utility cannot detect the router
- Confirm that the computer is connected directly by Ethernet and that Wi-Fi has been disabled.
- Check the cable, link lights, and the Ethernet port named in the vendor’s instructions.
- Verify that any static IPv4 address, subnet mask, and automatic setting restoration match the documented procedure.
- Confirm that the router is actually in recovery mode, using the expected LED pattern or utility message.
If these checks do not resolve detection, do not try a different model’s utility or repeatedly interrupt power. The router may not support that recovery method, or the firmware failure may require service.
The upload is rejected
Recheck the model, hardware revision, region, file extension, and version requirements. A rejected file is safer than a forced one. Download a fresh copy from the official support page and follow the vendor’s instructions about extracting or selecting it.

The router remains unusable after a successful upload
Allow the documented reboot period, then restore the computer’s network settings and test the administration page over Ethernet. If the page remains unavailable, record the final LED state and contact the manufacturer rather than starting an undocumented sequence.
When to contact technical support or replace the router
Contact the manufacturer when the exact model has no documented recovery process, the supported utility does not detect it, the upload fails with the correct file, or the router never reaches the documented recovery state. Provide the serial number if requested, model and revision, purchase region, firmware version, update time, LED behavior, and every step already attempted. TP-Link explicitly directs users to technical support when recovery is unsupported or unsuccessful.
Replacement is a last resort after support determines that recovery is unavailable or the hardware has failed. Buying another router is not the default response to a temporary update delay or a configuration reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPreventing a repeat failure
- Use a wired connection for firmware updates when the vendor recommends it.
- Keep the router powered by a reliable outlet or an uninterruptible power supply during the update.
- Read the release notes and model-specific instructions before starting.
- Export a configuration backup when the router supports it, and keep ISP credentials available.
- Record the original firmware version and hardware revision so a support technician can identify a compatible recovery file.
- Do not browse away from an update page or reboot until the manufacturer indicates completion.
Bottom line
Leave a possibly active update alone, identify the exact router model and revision, and use only the manufacturer’s regional firmware and documented recovery procedure. Recovery mode may involve Ethernet, a static IPv4 address, a utility, or a precise button sequence; none of those details can safely be generalized across brands. Reset only when instructed and expect to rebuild the network configuration. If the official process does not fit or fails, stop and contact technical support.
