A small increase in battery use for a few days after a Pixel software update can be normal: the phone is finishing downloads, rebuilding indexes, and optimizing software. Google does not promise an exact recovery time. If the drain remains unusual after a few days, investigate battery usage and contact Google support rather than assuming the update permanently damaged the battery.
Why battery use can rise after an update
Android may perform update-related work in the background after the installation screen disappears. Apps can be recompiled, data can be indexed, settings can be migrated, and applications may download their own updates. Those tasks can increase processor, storage, network, and display activity temporarily.
Google’s Pixel Phone Help describes this as a little more battery drain than usual for a few days after a software update. “A few days” is qualitative guidance, not a guaranteed number of hours or a promise that every phone will return to its previous pattern on a particular date. A phone that is still losing charge unusually quickly after that period needs a usage check.

Google says that optimization after a new setup or reset can take a few weeks to take full effect. That longer learning period does not mean you should ignore severe drain for weeks after an ordinary update.

Check the situation before changing settings
Record the details that support will need
Before troubleshooting, note the exact Pixel model, Android version and build number, when the update finished, and whether the phone is unusually warm. Also note whether the drain happens while the screen is on, while the phone is idle, or only in a particular app. These details distinguish a background app problem from normal update work and make a support conversation more productive.
Look for heat or physical swelling
Warmth during update processing is not, by itself, proof of a failed battery. Persistent heat when the phone is idle, a screen or back cover lifting away from the frame, or visible swelling is different. Stop pressing on or opening the phone and use Google’s repair options. A swollen battery is not a do-it-yourself battery replacement situation.
Use Battery usage to identify the cause
The most useful first check is the Pixel’s built-in usage screen:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery usage.
- Review the apps and system entries using the largest share of power for the period shown.
Menu names can vary slightly by Android version. Compare the top entries with how you actually used the phone. A video, navigation, camera, hotspot, or game session can legitimately appear near the top. An app that continues using substantial power in the background when you have barely opened it deserves closer attention.

Check an app’s background behavior
For an app that stands out, open its battery details from the usage screen and review its background activity or battery setting. Keep the general setting at Optimized, which is Google’s recommended setting for apps. Restrict background use only when a specific app is behaving abnormally; applying aggressive restrictions to every app can delay notifications or interrupt syncing.
Do not indiscriminately uninstall apps or force-stop essential system components. Google’s troubleshooting guidance warns against force-stopping essential apps and services, and Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled through these instructions. Identify the outlier first, then change only that app’s background setting or update it.
Keep Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
Open Settings > Battery and make sure Adaptive Battery is on. In the app battery settings, leave optimization enabled unless a particular app’s usage review shows a clear reason to test a restriction. Adaptive Battery uses your usage patterns to limit background work for less-used apps; turning it off removes a protection that can help the phone settle after software changes.

If the phone was recently set up from scratch or factory-reset, its learning period can last a few weeks. Continue normal use during that period, but still investigate an app that dominates Battery usage or a device that stays unusually hot. The shorter “few days” expectation applies to extra work after a software update; the longer period applies to learning after setup or reset.

Complete the basic fixes in this order
1. Restart the Pixel
Restart the phone normally, then use it for a while under your usual conditions. A restart can clear a temporary process that remained active after installation. It does not erase your data or roll back the update.
2. Check for another Android update
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Software update.
- Install an available update and restart if prompted.
The wording and location can differ by Android release. A follow-up system update may include fixes for problems discovered after the first release.
3. Update every app through Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Install available app updates.
An app built for an older release can consume more power or behave badly after Android changes. Updating the app is a more targeted response than removing unrelated applications.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery diagnostics.
- Select Battery draining too quickly.
Some troubleshooting steps require Android 14 or later, and the exact options depend on the Pixel model and software version. If you do not see Battery diagnostics, continue with Battery usage and the other steps rather than treating the missing menu as a fault.
Decide whether the drain is actually abnormal
Battery percentage alone is not enough to diagnose a defect. Screen brightness, cellular signal, camera use, navigation, video calls, hotspot use, gaming, and poor reception can all change consumption. Compare similar days with similar use. An idle phone that loses charge rapidly, repeatedly shows a single background app at the top of Battery usage, or remains hot without a demanding task is more concerning than a day dominated by the screen or mobile data.
The available guidance does not provide a study statistic for the percentage of Pixel owners affected or an average recovery time. Avoid judging your phone against an invented “normal” hourly loss. Use the usage breakdown, temperature, timing, and repeatability of the symptom instead.
When to contact Google
Contact Google support if unusual drain continues after a few days of normal use and the checks above do not identify a temporary task or misbehaving app. Have your model, Android build, update completion date, Battery usage screenshots, diagnostic result (if available), and temperature observations ready. Tell support whether the problem occurs during idle time, which app or system entry is highest, and whether the phone is physically swollen.

Support can determine whether the symptom matches a known software issue, an app conflict, or a battery that needs service. Availability of repair routes and eligibility depends on the model and location, so do not assume a particular replacement option or price before the device is diagnosed.
Factory reset: an advanced last resort
A factory data reset can remove corrupted settings or app state, but it is not the first response to ordinary post-update drain. It erases the phone’s data and apps. Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and any files you need before starting, and confirm that you know the Google Account credentials required during setup.
Consider a reset only after reviewing Battery usage, updating Android and apps, restarting, and discussing persistent drain with Google or following support’s direction. After the reset, Adaptive Battery may need a few weeks to learn the new usage pattern, so evaluate the result with that distinction in mind.

Do not replace the battery based on this symptom alone
Fast drain immediately after an update does not prove that the battery has failed. Google’s battery-health guidance uses model-specific capacity and charge-cycle conditions for replacement decisions. Those thresholds are service guidance, not evidence that every phone showing post-update drain needs a new battery.

Repair eligibility, warranty status, location, and the documented condition of your particular phone determine the available route. Use an authorized repair option for a battery problem. If the battery is swollen or the screen is lifting, do not open, puncture, press, or attempt to replace it yourself.
