Unplug the phone, don’t connect a cable while the port or cable end is wet, and let the connector dry with cool airflow. If sand is lodged inside, don’t probe it with a pin, swab, brush, or compressed air; turn the phone off and arrange professional cleaning if it remains stuck. The safe next step depends on whether the problem is moisture or dry debris, and on your phone model.
First, identify what reached the phone
Water and sand need different responses. Moisture can trigger a charging warning and may damage the connector or cable if you attempt wired charging too soon. Sand can block contact between the charging cable and the port, and trying to scrape it out can push grains farther in or damage the contacts.
- If the phone or connector is wet: disconnect any cable or accessory and let the affected parts dry before trying a wired connection.
- If sand or other dry debris is inside: stop inserting the cable, turn the phone off if you can do so safely, and avoid putting anything into the port.
- If both may have happened: treat the port as wet first. Don’t try to shake or dig out sand while the connector is wet; let the phone dry and then assess whether debris remains.
If the phone is unusually hot, visibly damaged, or behaving erratically after exposure, don’t keep testing it. Disconnect it from power and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for model-specific advice.

1. Disconnect cables and accessories
Unplug the charging cable and any other wired accessory. If a cable is connected to another powered device, disconnect it there too. Don’t reconnect either end until the phone’s connector, the cable ends, and the accessory are completely dry. Charging through a wet connector can damage the phone; Apple also warns that the cable’s pins can corrode. Samsung says moisture detection on Galaxy phones blocks charging to protect the device.

2. Remove excess liquid without reaching into the port
For an iPhone, Apple’s general exposure guidance recommends gently tapping the phone against your hand with the connector facing down to help remove excess liquid. Don’t strike it against a hard surface or shake it forcefully. Wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth if needed, but don’t push cloth, paper, or any other material into the connector.
Keep the phone in a dry place with airflow. Apple says cool air from a fan directed toward the connector may help. Let time and airflow do the work rather than trying to force-dry the port.
3. Avoid shortcuts that can cause damage
Do not use a hair dryer, heater, oven, or other external heat source. Don’t use compressed air, put the phone in rice, or insert cotton swabs, paper towels, or other objects into the connector. Apple specifically warns against heat and foreign objects in the Lightning or USB-C connector; its dust guidance also says not to use compressed air. These methods aren’t substitutes for drying and can damage the phone or leave material behind.

Do not rinse or flush a port to deal with sand. Apple’s instruction to rinse an iPhone applies to certain exposure to liquids other than water; it is not a general port-cleaning technique and does not establish that water should be used to clear debris.
4. Wait for the connector and accessories to dry
Don’t treat a fixed number of hours as proof that charging is safe. Apple’s guidance gives different timings in different contexts: its general exposure article says to allow at least five hours before wired charging or connecting an accessory, while its liquid-detection instructions say drying can take up to 24 hours. Those are not a universal guarantee or a single combined countdown. Follow the current instructions for your exact model and any on-screen alert, and reconnect only when the connector and accessories are completely dry.
For Galaxy phones, Samsung says most moisture evaporates by itself within a few hours, but the time varies. If a moisture warning remains, consult the current support instructions for that Galaxy model and region rather than assuming the port is ready because a particular number of hours has passed.

Can you charge a phone while its charging port is wet?
Do not use wired charging while the connector is wet. A liquid-detection alert is a reason to disconnect the cable, not to override the warning or keep reconnecting it. On Galaxy phones, moisture detection prevents charging; on iPhones covered by Apple’s liquid-detection instructions, the alert indicates that charging or an accessory connection should wait until the connector is dry.
When wireless charging may be an option
Apple says a Qi-certified wireless charger may be used with a compatible iPhone while its connector is wet, provided the back of the phone is dry. This is a conditional charging alternative, not a way to dry the port. Use it only if your exact phone supports wireless charging and the manufacturer’s instructions allow it. For phones other than the iPhones covered by Apple’s guidance, check the model-specific support information rather than assuming the same advice applies.
If you use wireless charging, keep liquid away from the charger and its power connection. Stop if the phone or charger becomes unusually hot or shows signs of damage. A wireless charger is not essential: if you don’t have one, leave the phone disconnected and let it dry.

How to handle sand in a charging port
Inspect without probing
Stop trying to plug in the cable and turn the phone off if practical. Look at the port under good light without inserting anything. If dirt is only on the phone’s exterior, Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for dust or dirt. Don’t use cleaning products on the phone based on that advice, and don’t push the cloth into the connector.
Apple and Samsung both advise against inserting objects into the charging port. Avoid pins, toothpicks, cotton swabs, picks, and brushes pushed inside, as well as vacuum attachments or compressed-air cans as a default fix. The support guidance does not establish a universally safe at-home method for extracting sand lodged against charging contacts. A tool that seems small enough can still push grit deeper or damage the connector.

If you can still see sand inside after dealing with any moisture, or the cable won’t seat normally, stop testing the connection and contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Samsung recommends professional cleaning if debris remains. Don’t force the cable into place: pressure can compact the sand or cause damage, and repeated plugging and unplugging won’t clear a blocked port reliably.

What the guidance means for iPhones and Galaxy phones
Manufacturer advice is not interchangeable across every phone. The cited Apple guidance has specific model scopes, while Samsung’s instructions are for Galaxy charging issues and may vary by model and region. For a different Android phone—or a model not clearly covered by the pages below—use that manufacturer’s current instructions.
| Situation | Apple guidance | Samsung guidance |
|---|---|---|
| General exposure and drying | Apple’s general article covers iPhone 7 and later; it recommends connector-down tapping, a dry area with airflow, and no external heat or objects in the connector. Water-resistance limits vary by model and condition. | Samsung says to leave a moisture-detected Galaxy phone to dry; most moisture evaporates by itself within a few hours. Timing and steps can depend on model and region. |
| Liquid-detection warnings | The cited liquid-alert instructions cover iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later models described on that page. They say drying may take up to 24 hours. | Moisture detection blocks charging on affected Galaxy devices. Follow the current instructions for the exact phone if the warning persists. |
| Sand or debris in the port | Apple advises against foreign objects in the connector and compressed air for dust; it recommends a soft, lint-free cloth only for exterior dirt. | Samsung says not to insert objects and recommends professional cleaning if debris remains lodged. |
| Wireless charging during a wet-port warning | Apple permits a Qi-certified charger for a compatible iPhone if the phone’s back is dry. | The cited Samsung guidance does not establish a general wet-port wireless-charging instruction. Check the specific Galaxy model’s current guidance. |
Apple’s general iPhone exposure page was published on March 17, 2026. Samsung Gulf’s charging troubleshooting page was last updated June 29, 2026. These dates identify the pages, not a promise that instructions are identical in every country or for every model. Apple’s resistance guidance is limited to iPhone 7 and later, and water resistance can vary by model and condition; it does not mean a phone is waterproof or that its port can safely be charged while wet.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if any of these apply:
- A liquid-detection alert returns after the phone and accessories have been allowed to dry according to the model’s instructions.
- Sand or other debris remains lodged in the port, or the cable cannot connect normally.
- The port looks bent, damaged, or corroded.
- The phone still will not charge after the connector is dry and you have followed its manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps.
- The phone shows other signs of damage or behaves abnormally after exposure.
Describe what happened, whether the exposure involved water or another liquid, and what warning appears. That information can help support staff determine the relevant model-specific next step. Do not assume a repair will be covered by warranty: coverage depends on the manufacturer’s terms, geography, and circumstances, and the guidance cited here does not establish a universal outcome.
Sources and model limits
The practical recommendations above follow Apple Support’s “About splash, water and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later” and its liquid-detection instructions, plus Samsung Gulf Support’s Galaxy charging and moisture troubleshooting guidance. Apple’s liquid-alert page covers iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later models described there; its broader exposure article covers iPhone 7 and later. Samsung’s guidance is regional and may be model-specific. Check the latest support page for your exact phone before acting on a menu setting or a device-specific exception.
