First find out exactly why the PC is ineligible. Run Microsoft PC Health Check or open Windows Update, then decide whether the blocker is a setting, an upgradeable component, or an unchangeable processor limitation. If the machine still cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, use Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) only as a temporary bridge, or move to a supported computer after backing up your data. Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware is not a supported solution.
Start with an eligibility check, not the PC’s age
Windows 11 eligibility depends on the complete configuration, not simply whether a computer is old. Microsoft’s baseline includes a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores from Microsoft’s approved CPU list, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying high-definition display. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Individual features and applications can require more.
Run PC Health Check
Install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check application and choose the Windows 11 eligibility check. The result identifies whether the PC qualifies and normally names the failed requirement. That explanation is more useful than guessing from the computer’s purchase year or model name. Record the exact message, including whether it refers to the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, memory, storage, firmware, or graphics.
Check Windows Update as a second source
On a consumer PC that is not managed by an organization, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10, then select Check for updates. Windows Update can assess upgrade eligibility and will offer the upgrade when Microsoft considers the device ready. A missing offer does not by itself identify the cause, so use PC Health Check for the detailed explanation.

Understand which blockers can be fixed
| Requirement or symptom | Can it sometimes be changed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| RAM below 4 GB | Often, but not always | Confirm the maximum supported memory, module type, and installation cost for the exact model with its manufacturer or a qualified technician. |
| Storage below 64 GB or insufficient free space | Sometimes | Check whether the drive is replaceable and whether the model supports a 64 GB or larger compatible drive. Distinguish total capacity from free space. |
| TPM 2.0 disabled or not detected | Sometimes | Read the manufacturer’s model-specific firmware instructions. A setting may be available, but older hardware may not contain a compatible TPM. |
| Secure Boot disabled | Sometimes | Check whether the firmware is UEFI and Secure Boot capable, then follow the computer maker’s instructions before changing boot settings. |
| Processor not on Microsoft’s approved list | No BIOS setting can change this | Do not spend money on a firmware tweak expecting approval. A motherboard and processor replacement is usually a different computer project and needs model-specific advice. |
| Unsupported graphics, firmware, or display | Depends on the exact hardware | Ask the manufacturer or a knowledgeable local professional whether a supported driver or hardware change exists. |
RAM and storage upgrades can be practical, but compatibility, labor, warranty effects, and total cost vary by model. A processor’s eligibility is inherent to the processor; changing a BIOS option cannot place an unapproved CPU on Microsoft’s list. TPM and Secure Boot results also depend on the device’s motherboard and firmware implementation. Microsoft recommends consulting the computer maker or a qualified local hardware professional before buying parts or changing firmware.
Path 1: Correct an eligible setting or component
Use this path when PC Health Check identifies a remediable issue and the device maker confirms that the change is supported.
- Save a current backup. Firmware changes and hardware work should never be your first exposure to the risk of losing important files.
- Identify the exact model and firmware instructions. Use the manufacturer’s support page or documentation for that model, not a generic guide for a similar-looking computer.
- Get a compatibility and cost assessment. For memory or storage, verify the part specification, maximum capacity, installation method, and whether a technician is needed. For TPM or Secure Boot, verify the precise firmware menu and any prerequisites.
- Apply one change at a time. If a professional performs the work, ask for the old drive or components to be returned and for the final configuration to be documented.
- Recheck eligibility. Run PC Health Check again and review Windows Update. Microsoft advises waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 after the device meets the requirements rather than forcing the upgrade immediately.
If the check still reports an unapproved processor or another non-remediable requirement, stop buying parts. Repeatedly changing unrelated settings will not make the system supported.

Windows 10 PCs continue to run after support ended, but Microsoft ended normal feature and security updates and technical support on October 14, 2025. Consumer Extended Security Updates are intended for eligible personal-use devices and provide security updates for a limited period after that date. ESU reduces the immediate exposure while you plan a supported replacement; it does not turn the PC into a Windows 11 device or extend normal Windows 10 feature support.

Why the end date needs checking
Microsoft’s official pages currently show conflicting consumer ESU timing. One support article states coverage through October 12, 2027. Another Windows page lists October 13, 2026 and notes regional variations. Treat neither date as universal. Open the ESU enrollment offer in Windows Settings or the Microsoft support information localized to your country, and read the terms displayed for your specific device before relying on the program.
When ESU is a sensible choice
- You need time to move files and applications to another computer.
- Your current PC runs essential software that you cannot replace immediately.
- The device is eligible for the consumer program in your region and the displayed term is acceptable.
- You understand that ESU is a stopgap, not a permanent support plan.
Keep the PC patched through the enrollment process, maintain backups, and limit the period during which it remains your primary online computer. If no ESU offer appears, do not assume that a third-party activation method is legitimate or supported.
Path 3: Replace the computer with a supported Windows 11 PC
Microsoft recommends a new Windows 11 device when the existing computer cannot meet the requirements or when replacement is otherwise appropriate. The right choice depends on your workload rather than a single universally best model.
Match the replacement to your actual work
- Applications: list work, school, creative, accounting, accessibility, and security software, then verify current Windows 11 support and licensing.
- Peripherals: check printers, scanners, docks, specialty USB devices, smart-card readers, and other hardware for compatible drivers.
- Performance: choose memory, storage, graphics, and processor capability for the applications you use, not merely the Windows minimums.
- Accessibility: account for screen size, keyboard layout, ports, assistive technology, and display or audio requirements.
- Longevity and service: consider warranty coverage, repairability, firmware support, and whether the computer can be upgraded later.
- Budget: include required accessories, software migration, data transfer, and any professional setup.
Do not treat the minimum Windows 11 specification as a recommendation for a comfortable long-term system. It is an eligibility baseline, and individual programs may need substantially more capacity.

Back up and migrate before changing systems
Back up important files before a firmware change, hardware repair, operating-system transition, or replacement. Microsoft provides Windows Backup and OneDrive migration options. An external drive is another possible backup destination, especially for large folders or files that you do not want to keep solely in the cloud. Use a backup method you can actually restore and verify.
- Inventory your data. Include Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads, browser data, email archives, project folders, saved games, and files stored outside your user folder.
- Check application access. Record license keys or sign-in details where permitted, export settings when an application supports it, and confirm that installers are available for the new system.
- Back up to a separate destination. Use Windows Backup, OneDrive, an external drive, or a combination. A backup on the same failing drive is not a backup against drive failure.
- Verify the copy. Open representative files from the backup, check photo and video counts, and confirm that critical folders are present.
- Transfer and test before erasing. On the new or repaired computer, open essential documents and run the applications and peripherals you depend on.
- Protect the old device. After migration is confirmed, reset or securely erase the old computer before selling, trading in, donating, or recycling it.
Microsoft points users to regional recycling and trade-in programs, but availability and eligibility vary by market. Check the rules in your location and remove personal accounts before handing over the device.
What happens if you keep using Windows 10?
The computer will not suddenly stop booting on the end-of-support date. It can continue to run installed software, but normal security updates, feature updates, and Microsoft technical support have ended. An internet-connected, unsupported system is more exposed because newly discovered vulnerabilities may not receive ordinary fixes. If you must keep it temporarily, use an eligible ESU plan when available, maintain tested backups, keep applications updated where possible, and avoid treating the arrangement as a permanent solution.

An unsupported installation therefore does not solve the support problem. It can create uncertain driver behavior, update failures, application problems, and difficult recovery if the installation breaks. If you choose to experiment despite that warning, treat it as an unsupported project with a complete backup and a recovery plan—not as a supported upgrade path for a work or family computer.
Consider another operating system only after checking compatibility
A different operating system may be possible for some users, but it is not a universal answer. Before making that choice, verify that every essential application, peripheral, accessibility tool, cloud service, and file format works with the proposed system. Check who provides security updates, how long maintenance lasts, how drivers are obtained, and what support is available in your region. If any critical dependency is unverified, keep the current system protected while you investigate or choose a supported Windows computer instead.

| Path | Supported, regularly updated operating system? | Main costs | Useful life and risk | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fix a setting or upgrade a component | Potentially, if PC Health Check passes afterward | Parts, labor, and possible firmware or recovery work; exact amounts are device-specific | Can extend the existing machine, but only when the manufacturer confirms compatibility | A PC with a remediable blocker and worthwhile remaining hardware life |
| Consumer ESU | Provides limited Windows 10 security updates, not Windows 11 support | Program terms and any regional cost or requirements shown during enrollment | Temporary; end date varies by the current Microsoft terms and region | Someone who needs transition time |
| Replace with a Windows 11 PC | Yes, assuming the new device meets current requirements | Computer, accessories, software, setup, and migration | Usually the clearest long-term support path | A system with an unchangeable processor blocker or aging hardware |
| Unsupported Windows 11 installation | No guarantee of support or updates | Installation and recovery time, with unpredictable troubleshooting | Compatibility and security risk | Not an appropriate supported-workaround choice |
| Another operating system | Depends on the chosen system and its maintenance policy | Migration, replacement software, and possible peripheral changes | Compatibility must be verified for your workload | Users whose applications and devices are confirmed compatible |
When comparing options, evaluate total cost, expected useful life, application and peripheral compatibility, backup and migration effort, local ESU or recycling availability, and your tolerance for operating without full support. Hardware suitability and costs cannot be determined accurately without the exact PC model.

Common situations and the safest response
PC Health Check says TPM is missing
Confirm the model’s firmware documentation. TPM may be disabled, implemented under a manufacturer-specific name, or genuinely absent. Do not clear or modify TPM settings without understanding the effect on drive encryption and recovery keys.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Secure Boot is disabled
Check whether the computer is using UEFI and whether Secure Boot is supported. Changing legacy boot settings can make an existing installation fail to start if the system is not prepared, so follow the manufacturer’s procedure and keep recovery media and backups available.
The only failure is storage or memory
Ask whether the drive or memory is replaceable and what the complete installed cost will be. A low-cost part may not be economical if the computer has a non-upgradeable design, a weak battery, failing cooling, or an unapproved processor.
The processor is not eligible
Accept that a BIOS setting cannot correct this result. Compare the cost and risk of a major motherboard-level project with a supported replacement, then back up your data before either decision.

A practical decision checklist
- Run PC Health Check and read the named blocker.
- Confirm the result in Windows Update where applicable.
- Ask the computer maker or a qualified local professional whether the blocker is safely changeable.
- Do not buy parts to solve an unapproved processor.
- Back up and verify important files before any firmware, hardware, or operating-system change.
- If eligible, inspect the exact Consumer ESU offer and end date shown for your region.
- For replacement, verify applications, peripherals, accessibility needs, budget, and migration requirements.
- Recycle or trade in the old computer only after migration is tested and personal data is removed.
The supported choice is the one that leaves you with a maintained operating system and a dependable way to recover your data. For many PCs with a processor or firmware that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, a planned replacement—using ESU only to bridge the transition—is safer than forcing an unsupported installation.
