If you suspect a Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN was exploited, treat a suspicious successful gateway connection as a potential security incident. First identify the exact PAN-OS or Prisma Access release, preserve GlobalProtect logs, hunt for the current CVE-2026-0257 indicators, and compare your deployment with Palo Alto Networks’ live advisory. A probe alone does not prove that an attacker established a VPN session; a matching successful gateway-connected event should trigger your incident-response process.
What this warning covers
This guidance focuses on CVE-2026-0257, an authentication-bypass vulnerability in GlobalProtect portal and gateway components. Official security authorities and Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 reported active exploitation in 2026. An unauthenticated remote attacker can bypass restrictions and establish an unauthorized VPN connection on an affected deployment.
The scope is specific: vulnerable GlobalProtect deployments running affected PAN-OS releases, plus Prisma Access releases identified in government advisories. “A Palo Alto VPN incident” can describe many different situations, so do not assume that every alert, login failure, or GlobalProtect outage is this vulnerability. Confirm the product, release branch, configuration and event type before drawing conclusions.

Make the first decision: probe or successful VPN session?
Unit 42 reported that only a small portion of the devices it observed being probed established VPN sessions. The distinction matters operationally:
- Probe or scan: an internet connection or exploit attempt was directed at the portal or gateway, but your logs do not show that a VPN session was established.
- Successful gateway-connected event: GlobalProtect recorded a connection that completed far enough to create a gateway-connected event. If it correlates with the current indicators, treat it as suspicious unauthorized access.
- Post-access activity: activity after a connection, such as account use, administrative changes or movement to internal systems. Unit 42 said it had not identified post-access behavior or lateral movement in the activity described in its brief at that time. That time-bound observation is not a guarantee about later campaigns or your environment.
Do not close an investigation merely because you see scanning. Conversely, do not label every scan a confirmed breach. Preserve the evidence and use the event type, indicators and deployment version together.
Step 1: Establish exactly what is deployed
- Identify the service. Record whether the affected entry point is a GlobalProtect portal, a GlobalProtect gateway on PAN-OS, or Prisma Access.
- Record the exact release. Capture the full PAN-OS or Prisma Access version, including maintenance and hotfix suffixes. Also record the relevant portal and gateway configuration, because affected branches and fixes can vary by product and release.
- Check the current Palo Alto advisory. Compare the exact release and deployment with Palo Alto Networks’ current CVE-2026-0257 advisory. Follow the workaround, mitigation and fixed-release instructions for that branch rather than copying a version number from an older article.
- Record dates and ownership. Note when the version was installed, who administers the gateway, which logging system receives GlobalProtect events, and who has authority to declare an incident.
Government notices provide useful cross-checks but do not replace the vendor’s live advisory. The Singapore Cyber Security Agency notice dated May 31, 2026 lists the following affected PAN-OS families. “Before” means versions earlier than the listed maintenance release; it does not mean every device in the branch has the same fix path.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s advisory, dated May 13 and updated May 29, 2026, also identifies Prisma Access 11.2.0 releases before 11.2.7-h13 and 10.2.0 releases before 10.2.10-h36. It reported that CISA added CVE-2026-0257 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on May 29, 2026. Treat these lists as dated reference points: maintenance releases and applicability can change, so verify them against the current vendor notice before making a production decision.
Step 2: Preserve GlobalProtect evidence before changing it
Preserve the original logs before rotating, purging or heavily filtering them. Export the relevant GlobalProtect portal and gateway records to a protected location with timestamps, timezone, source address, username or session identifier, endpoint details and event type. Keep the original export read-only and document who collected it and when.
- Search for successful login and gateway-connected events, not just failed logins or web requests.
- Include a window covering activity before the public proof-of-concept release on May 29, 2026, and a separate window after that date.
- Preserve authentication, configuration-change, administrator, system and network telemetry that can show what happened after a session.
- Check whether log forwarding, retention or clock synchronization gaps could hide an event. Record those gaps instead of treating missing data as proof that nothing happened.
Unit 42’s brief was updated June 9, 2026 and says it will be updated as more relevant information becomes available. Indicators are therefore time-bound intelligence, not a permanent blocklist or a complete catalog of every attacker.

Step 3: Hunt the current indicators
Pre-proof-of-concept source addresses
For activity before May 29, Unit 42 recommended checking successful login connections in GlobalProtect logs from these addresses. The bracketed dots are a safe defanged format for searching and documenting indicators:

Search for successful events associated with each address. A raw connection attempt, a blocked request or a scan without a completed gateway session is not equivalent to an unauthorized VPN connection. Correlate the source address with the event result, session identifier and time.
Suspicious host IDs and device names
Also look for successful gateway-connected events containing the following example host identifiers or device names:

These values may be unusual in your environment, but they are not independently proof of exploitation. Validate whether the event completed, whether the source and timing are plausible, and whether the device identity matches an enrolled or expected endpoint.
Post-proof-of-concept client characteristics
For monitoring after May 29, Unit 42 described hard-coded client configuration characteristics. In particular, hunt for an endpoint_os_version value of Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit together with an empty source_user_info.domain. Treat the combination as a hunting clue, not a signature that catches every attacker or proves compromise by itself.

Step 4: Interpret what you find
| Finding | What it establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Probe or scan only; no successful session | Someone tested or contacted the exposed service. It does not establish that a VPN connection succeeded. | Preserve logs, verify the release, apply the current mitigation or update, and continue monitoring. |
| Successful gateway-connected event with a listed indicator | A session matches threat intelligence associated with the active-exploitation campaign. | Activate the organization’s incident-response process and preserve related telemetry immediately. |
| Successful event without a listed indicator | A connection occurred, but the available indicator list does not explain it. | Investigate the user, device, source, timing and post-session activity; do not dismiss it solely because the IP is absent from the list. |
| Affected release with no suspicious event found | The deployment remains exposed or requires a vendor-directed mitigation. | Follow the current Palo Alto advisory for workaround, mitigation and fixed-release actions. |
| Fixed or unaffected release, but suspicious event exists | Updating does not erase evidence of an earlier session or another access path. | Keep the incident investigation active and establish when the suspicious activity occurred. |
Unit 42 specifically recommends incident-response protocols when a successful gateway-connected event matches its indicators. Use your organization’s established severity, evidence-preservation and notification procedures rather than improvising a destructive containment action.
Step 5: Mitigate and update safely
- Read the live advisory for the exact branch. Confirm whether Palo Alto specifies a workaround, a configuration mitigation, an emergency update, or more than one option.
- Plan the change. Identify maintenance impact, redundant gateways, administrator access, rollback conditions and validation tests. Coordinate with the incident lead if an investigation is open.
- Apply the vendor-directed mitigation or fixed release. Do not substitute a nearby version number from a different branch. Verify that both portal and gateway components in the affected path are covered.
- Validate after the change. Confirm expected GlobalProtect authentication and gateway connectivity, check that logging and alert forwarding still work, and review new events for continued suspicious activity.
- Document the result. Record the installed version, change time, advisory instructions followed, validation results and any remaining exposure.
Government advisories recommend performing mitigations and applying necessary updates. They do not provide a universal recovery sequence for every organization. Do not assume that installing a fixed release alone answers questions about sessions that occurred before the update.
When to escalate to incident response
Escalate promptly when you have a suspicious successful gateway-connected event, especially one correlated with the listed addresses, host identifiers, device names or client characteristics. Preserve the affected logs and involve the people responsible for identity, network, endpoint and legal or regulatory decisions.
Unit 42 directs organizations that believe they may have been compromised, or that have an urgent matter, to its Incident Response team. That is a vendor-provided response route. Your own incident-response provider, internal security team or regulatory process may also be required by your organization’s plans.
The available evidence does not establish a universal CVE-specific recovery checklist for credential rotation, certificate or key replacement, firewall rebuild or restoration. Whether those actions are necessary depends on what the investigation finds, how your environment is configured and what the current vendor advisory recommends. Have the incident lead decide them from evidence rather than applying a blanket checklist.
Common mistakes that make the investigation worse
- Calling a scan a breach: probing and a completed VPN session are different findings.
- Waiting for a perfect indicator match: the published list is time-bound and incomplete; investigate unexplained successful sessions too.
- Using an old fixed-version list: branch-specific releases and Prisma Access applicability can change. Check the live advisory.
- Deleting logs during cleanup: preserve originals before changing settings, rotating storage or rebuilding a device.
- Assuming no lateral movement was found means none occurred: Unit 42’s statement was limited to the activity known when its brief was written.
- Buying unrelated consumer tools: generic antivirus, a consumer VPN subscription or new hardware is not an established remedy for this server-side authentication-bypass scenario.
A concise operational checklist
- Identify GlobalProtect versus Prisma Access and record the exact release and configuration.
- Compare that release with Palo Alto’s current CVE-2026-0257 advisory.
- Preserve portal and gateway logs with timestamps, session details and source addresses.
- Search successful gateway-connected events for the current Unit 42 indicators.
- Separate scans and probes from completed VPN sessions.
- Activate incident response for a suspicious successful event.
- Apply the advisory’s branch-specific mitigation or fixed release.
- Validate connectivity, logging and continued monitoring after the change.
- Document uncertainty, missing telemetry and every decision.
What to remember
CVE-2026-0257 is an actively exploited authentication-bypass scenario, not evidence that every Palo Alto VPN has been compromised. The decisive first question is whether your logs show a successful gateway-connected event. From there, the exact deployment version, current indicators and incident-response process determine the appropriate response. Keep checking the live vendor and government advisories because release guidance and threat indicators can change.
