Call your bank’s fraud or security department immediately using the number on your card or contact details you find independently in its official app or website. Tell the bank your online account may be compromised, report suspicious transfers or changed account details, and ask it to secure your online access and affected accounts. Do not wait to finish checking your phone or computer before reporting the problem.
The legal timelines below apply to certain electronic fund transfers in the United States; they are not universal guarantees. If you live elsewhere, contact your bank promptly and check the protections and reporting deadlines that apply in your country.
What to do first if you suspect a bank account takeover
- Contact the bank through a trusted route. Call the number printed on your card, or open the bank’s official app or website yourself and use its listed contact details. Explain that your online banking account may be compromised. Identify suspicious transfers, unfamiliar payees, or changes to your email address, phone number, password, or other account details. Ask the bank to secure online access and affected accounts, and follow its instructions about closing or replacing an account or card. - Report each unauthorized debit or transfer. Be specific about the transactions you do not recognize. Ask how to submit any required written notice or documentation, and record when you reported the problem, whom you spoke with, and the case or confirmation number.
- Keep evidence. Save bank alerts, relevant messages, screenshots, statements, and copies of correspondence. Do not delete information that may help the bank investigate.
- Do not trust unexpected instructions to move money. Avoid links and phone numbers in unsolicited texts, emails, or calls claiming to be from your bank. Contact the bank independently instead. Secure your login and recovery details
If you can still sign in
- Change the bank password to a strong, unique password. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too, starting with the email account used to recover your bank login.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the bank offers it.
- Sign out other sessions or devices if the bank provides that option.
- Check the recovery email address and phone number, and remove any you do not recognize.

If you are locked out
Use the bank’s official account-recovery process and call its fraud team using a verified number. Do not use a recovery link from an unexpected message or give a caller your password or one-time security code. Bank recovery procedures and available controls vary by institution.

Report unauthorized transactions promptly
For certain US electronic fund transfers, reporting time can affect how much of a loss you may have to bear. CFPB guidance says that if a debit card is lost or stolen, reporting it within two business days can limit liability to the lesser of the unauthorized amount or $50; reporting later may raise potential liability to $500. The CFPB also explains a two-business-day reporting rule for a stolen PIN or security code. If an account statement shows an unauthorized transfer, notify the bank within 60 days; waiting longer can affect responsibility for later transfers. These rules depend on the transfer, card or code status, account type, and circumstances, so they are not a guarantee of a particular outcome. After you notify the bank, the CFPB says a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate. If it determines an error occurred, it must correct it within one business day and report its findings within three business days. Check whether more than your bank login was exposed
If personal information may have been stolen
If the incident may have exposed information such as your Social Security number or other identity details—not just your bank password—report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow its recovery plan. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze if you are concerned that someone could misuse your identity to open new accounts. Prioritize the bank report first. Then, if someone had access to your device, the FTC recommends updating its security software, running a scan, removing anything the scan identifies as a problem, and changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication. FTC malware guidance.

Stay alert for follow-up scams and new activity
Continue checking bank activity and watch for messages or calls from people claiming they can recover your money or protect your account. Do not share login credentials or one-time codes, and do not transfer money because an unsolicited caller tells you to. The FTC states: “The FTC never threatens you, makes you transfer your money to ‘protect it,’ or tells you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone.” FTC identity theft guidance.
