If your Old School RuneScape (OSRS) items, stats or character suddenly look missing, do not assume they were deleted. First check your inventory and bank, then confirm that you opened Old School RuneScape on the intended account rather than RuneScape or a different login method. If you cannot access the account, use Jagex’s recovery process. Jagex currently offers no general OSRS lost-item service; returns are limited to specific, publicly verified incidents.
The correct fix depends on what changed: a misplaced item, the wrong game profile, a wrong account, account hijacking or a genuine in-game loss. Follow the branches below in order, and send account information only through official Jagex forms.
Start with the five-minute checks
- Look in your inventory and bank. Switch through bank tabs, search for the item, and check whether you deposited, noted, equipped or moved it. Jagex lists these as the first places to check.
- Speak with Diango. Some recoverable items, including certain Old School holiday items, can be reclaimed from Diango. This check does not mean every missing item is recoverable.
- Confirm the game. Make sure the title screen and world are Old School RuneScape, not RuneScape (the separate modern game).
- Check the character. Compare the name, location, quest progress, skills and bank with what you remember. A completely unfamiliar character usually indicates a different account or login route, not vanished OSRS progress.
- Stop and secure things if anything looks suspicious. An unknown email, linked login, bank change or password notification can indicate account takeover.
Jagex’s Lost items policy excludes several categories from return, including items already recoverable from Diango, unique quest items, certain pets, temporary holiday-event items and items that grant experience. Check those rules before treating an item as permanently lost.
Make sure you opened the right game profile
RuneScape and Old School RuneScape can be accessed through the same overall account, but their characters are independent. Jagex states that character information, stats and items do not transfer between the games. An account returning to OSRS after years may therefore show a new character at level one even though its RuneScape character still has the old progress. The OSRS profile starts separately; there is no conversion or import of RuneScape items or levels.

Use the game selector in the launcher or client and sign in again to Old School RuneScape. Do not create a new character while diagnosing the problem, because doing so can make it harder to identify which profile you originally used. The official explanation is in Jagex’s RuneScape and Old School guide.
Determine whether this is the wrong account or login method
If the character, bank or location is unfamiliar, the most common explanation is that you logged into another account. Your in-game display name is not your login credential.
Use the credential that matches the account’s age
- Accounts created before November 2010: Jagex’s guidance says these generally use the original account login name.
- Accounts created after November 2010: These generally use the registered login email.
- Accounts created through another service: Use the original Apple, Facebook, Google, Steam or other third-party sign-in button instead of typing an email into a different login form.
If the same email is associated with both a RuneScape account and a Jagex Account, Jagex says the Jagex Account takes priority during login. A successful sign-in therefore does not prove that it opened the character you intended.

Use Logged into the wrong account for the account-identification checks, and Jagex’s forgotten-login guidance linked from that page for email reminders and third-party login routes. Never use the character’s display name in place of the login name or email.
Recover access when you cannot sign in
Password reset is appropriate when you still control the registered email or know the correct login. If the email is unavailable, the registered address was changed, an authenticator cannot be removed, or a reset message never arrives, submit a full recovery appeal instead.
Submit the recovery appeal
- Open Jagex’s account-recovery appeal form.
- Enter the login name or login email for the account you are trying to recover. Do not enter the display name.
- Provide a new email address that Jagex can use to register or return the account.
- Answer as many ownership and account-history questions as possible. Include the earliest passwords you remember, approximate creation details and historic payment information where requested.
- Submit the form once, then watch the new email address for the decision. Jagex says an outcome email should arrive within 24 hours; that is a published process timeframe, not a promise that access or missing items will be restored.
Recovery information is sensitive. Send it only through the official form, not in a forum post, social-media message or comment.

If Jagex denies the appeal
Read the denial and submit a stronger appeal rather than repeatedly guessing. Jagex recommends using the device and location from which you normally played, supplying the earliest passwords and historic payment details you can verify, and avoiding VPNs or proxies during recovery. The original account creator is treated as the owner, even if another person later played on a bought or shared account. See Account recovery denied for those recommendations.

When recovery says no account exists
If you are certain that the login name or email is correct but the recovery process reports “No accounts could be found,” Jagex warns that a hijacker may have imported the account into a Jagex Account. Follow Unable to submit an account recovery and contact Jagex Support immediately. Do not keep creating accounts with the same address while the case is unresolved.
Distinguish the likely cause before choosing a fix

What Jagex will and will not return
Jagex’s official wording is explicit: “Please be aware that we are currently unable to offer a general lost item service for Old School.” That means ordinary player mistakes, scams, hacks and unverified events are not automatically compensated. Account recovery restores control of an account; it is not an item-restoration process.

Jagex identifies only narrow situations in which it aims to put things right:
- A news-post-verified exploit. Jagex first confirms and publicly describes the incident.
- Jagex staff error. The loss must result from an official service mistake.
- Group Ironman storage malfunction. The problem must be a recognized storage failure.
Jagex says it generally identifies affected players through its own systems. If a significant number of players will be compensated, it publishes a news post explaining the issue and make-good plan. Do not submit a RuneScape (non-OSRS) claim form: the RuneScape policy’s rare-disruption process, including a 48-hour claim window, does not apply to Old School RuneScape.

- Secure the email account. Change its password to a unique one, enable its strongest available two-factor method, remove unknown recovery addresses and review active sessions.
- Secure the Jagex account. Use a unique password and enable an authenticator. Jagex recommends upgrading to a Jagex Account where applicable.
- Review linked logins. Remove Apple, Facebook, Google, Steam or other linked accounts you do not recognize, and secure each legitimate provider separately.
- End other sessions. Sign out unknown or active sessions if the account controls provide that option.
- Set an OSRS Bank PIN. This adds a separate barrier to the bank even after someone reaches the game account.
- Check the device. Install operating-system updates, remove suspicious browser extensions and scan for malware before entering a new password.
Jagex notes that an authenticator can block access even when someone knows the password, but email security remains critical because an attacker who controls the email may be able to disable account protections. Its broader recommendations are listed in Security tips.
Document the incident without exposing secrets
Keep a private timeline with the last time you saw the item, the world and activity you were doing, unusual emails, password changes, linked-account notifications and screenshots of error messages. Record item names and approximate quantities, but never publish passwords, authenticator codes, recovery answers, payment details or full login identifiers. Those details belong only in Jagex’s secure support forms.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop trying random logins once you have confirmed the game, account and login method. Repeated guesses can send you down the wrong recovery path. If inventory, bank and Diango checks find nothing and there is no verified Jagex incident, the official policy provides no general OSRS restoration route. Your practical next steps are to secure the account, complete recovery if needed and monitor official Jagex news for a confirmed exploit or service error.
