Start with the exact message on the screen. “No SIM” or “Invalid SIM” usually means the phone cannot read the card or eSIM; “Emergency calls only” or “No Service” usually means the line is not registered on the network; calls that work while mobile data does not point to network settings, an APN, coverage, or an outage. Check activation and compatibility before assuming the handset is defective, then contact the carrier with the phone’s model, IMEI or EID, and the precise error if the problem remains.
Identify which connection is failing
Write down the wording exactly as shown. Different messages lead to different fixes, and the record helps support staff find the account or device problem quickly.
| Phone behavior | Most likely area to check | First useful action |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM or Invalid SIM | Physical SIM seating, damaged card, eSIM profile, SIM protection, or an unsupported device | Power down when the manufacturer instructs you to, reseat the card or restart eSIM setup, and confirm the line is active on this handset. |
| Emergency calls only | No active SIM/eSIM, damaged SIM, incomplete activation, or inability to register | Verify that the intended line is enabled on the new phone and that the carrier has completed activation. |
| No Service | Registration, compatibility, lock status, coverage, outage, or incorrect mobile-network settings | Check carrier compatibility and coverage, then review network settings. |
| Calls and texts work, but mobile data does not | Mobile-data setting, APN, coverage, outage, or plan provisioning | Turn on mobile data, check the carrier’s APN instructions, and check for an outage. |
Confirm that the line is active on the new phone
An upgrade or number transfer does not always move service automatically. Sign in to the carrier account or app and verify that the correct phone number and plan are assigned to the new device and that the line is enabled. Follow that carrier’s current activation or transfer procedure rather than assuming the old SIM will continue working.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePhysical-SIM activation
For an upgrade or transferred number, the carrier may require activation of the replacement SIM. AT&T states that an upgrade or number transfer requires activating the new SIM. T‑Mobile likewise tells existing customers upgrading to activate the new SIM, and says SIM Protection must be disabled before a SIM transfer. Those requirements vary by carrier, account type, and plan, so use the instructions for your provider and line.

eSIM activation
eSIM setup requires a phone and plan that support eSIM. Connect to Wi‑Fi or a hotspot when the carrier requires a network connection to download the profile. Depending on the carrier and model, the profile may arrive through a carrier app, a prompt during setup, the phone’s cellular settings, or a carrier-provided QR code.
For example, Verizon says some Android devices need a QR code and its current guidance says iPhone 12 and newer do not. That is a Verizon workflow, not a rule that applies to every carrier or phone. If the download fails, confirm eSIM eligibility for the exact model and plan, reconnect to reliable Wi‑Fi, and restart the carrier’s activation flow.
Check carrier lock and network compatibility separately
“Unlocked” and “compatible” answer different questions. An unlocked phone is permitted to accept another carrier’s service, but it can still lack the radio bands, voice technology, software, eSIM support, or carrier features required by that network.

Verify the lock
If the phone came from another carrier, ask that carrier or the seller to confirm its lock status. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. The value No SIM restrictions indicates that it is unlocked. Verizon says a phone being moved to Verizon must be unlocked by the previous carrier and that activation may take up to 24 hours after the unlock is completed.
Run the intended carrier’s compatibility check
Use the carrier’s official model or IMEI checker, or ask support to run it. Enter the exact model and, when requested, the IMEI rather than relying on a generic description such as “Galaxy” or “unlocked Android.” Regional variants can have different radios and eligibility.
AT&T requires a bring-your-own device to be both unlocked and compatible. Google Fi’s checker can return fully compatible, compatible with limitations, or not compatible; an unlocked result alone does not establish full feature support. Google Fi lists Android 7.0 or newer, LTE bands 2 and 4, and VoLTE among its network requirements, while newer software may be needed for all features. Those are Google Fi requirements and should not be treated as universal requirements for other carriers.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
- Check the exact model or regional variant.
- Confirm the bands used by the carrier in your market.
- Verify VoLTE support for voice service where the carrier requires it.
- Confirm that the phone and plan support the desired eSIM or physical-SIM method.
- Ask whether specific features, such as Wi‑Fi calling or 5G, are limited even when basic service is supported.
If the phone does not recognize a physical SIM
- Power the phone off if the manufacturer’s instructions call for removal while it is off.
- Eject the tray, inspect the card for cracks, corrosion, bent contacts, or contamination, and check that the tray itself is not damaged.
- Place the SIM in the orientation shown by the tray. Close the tray completely; do not force it or use a tray from another model.
- Start the phone and allow time for it to read the card. If the same message returns, try the carrier’s test procedure or another known-good SIM when available.
If another card works, ask the carrier to replace the original SIM. If no card is detected, the tray, reader, software, or device eligibility may be involved and the carrier or manufacturer should diagnose it. A small SIM-ejector tool is useful only when the included tool is missing; it cannot repair activation, account restrictions, compatibility, coverage, or provisioning.
Check SIM protection
Some carriers block moving a SIM to a different handset until a security feature is disabled. Samsung specifically identifies carrier SIM protection as a possible reason a new device cannot activate. On many Galaxy models, SIM details are under Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status, although names vary with model and software. The carrier must remove its protection when that rule applies; changing a phone setting alone will not override an account-level block.
If the SIM is recognized but the phone has no service
Restart and apply carrier settings
Restart the phone after activation or a SIM change. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier-settings update prompt; install it if offered. On Samsung phones, incorrect mobile-network settings can prevent registration. Use the mobile-network reset option only after checking activation, compatibility, and coverage, because it removes saved cellular configuration and may require you to re-enter settings.

Check coverage and outages
Look at the carrier’s coverage map for the location where you are testing and check its outage notices. Test outdoors or in another known-covered location if practical. Apple’s eSIM guidance specifically recommends checking coverage and service outages when activation appears complete but the phone cannot connect.
Confirm the account is provisioned
A SIM can be readable while the line remains pending, blocked, or attached to the old device in the carrier’s systems. Support must verify the line’s activation state, device eligibility, and registration; repeatedly rebooting cannot correct an account-side provisioning error.

If calls work but mobile data does not
- Make sure mobile data is enabled and that the new line is selected for data when the phone has more than one SIM.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi briefly and test in a location with known coverage.
- Restart the phone and install any offered carrier-settings update.
- Check the carrier’s current APN instructions for your exact plan and device.
- Check for an outage or a data restriction on the account.
APN values are carrier-specific. T‑Mobile notes that a bring-your-own phone may need its APN entered before data works. Do not copy an APN from a different carrier or an unrelated phone; an incorrect value can stop data even when calls and texts are functioning. If the carrier confirms the APN and plan are correct, reset mobile-network settings according to the phone maker’s current prompts and test again.

Physical SIM or eSIM: choose the appropriate recovery path
| Path | What must be true | Common failure | Best next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical SIM | Card is undamaged, fits the correct tray, and the carrier has activated that card for the line. | No detection, poor tray contact, old or blocked card. | Reseat and inspect it, then have the carrier test or replace the SIM. |
| eSIM | Exact phone, plan, and carrier support eSIM; the phone can download the profile, often over Wi‑Fi. | Unsupported model, missing QR code or app step, failed download, or an old profile still assigned. | Delete nothing until the carrier advises it; reconnect to Wi‑Fi and repeat the provider’s transfer flow. |
Do not delete a working eSIM profile merely to experiment. If the transfer stalls, ask the carrier to confirm whether the profile was issued, downloaded, or still attached to the previous device.
What to give carrier support
Contact the carrier that owns the line when the basic checks fail, when activation is pending, or when the compatibility result is unclear. Ask the representative to verify each item rather than only resetting the line:
- Activation and provisioning status for the number and new handset.
- Whether the line is blocked, pending, suspended, or protected against SIM transfer.
- Device eligibility for the exact model, IMEI, market, and intended features.
- Carrier-lock status and any waiting period after an unlock.
- Whether the physical SIM or eSIM transfer is complete, failed, or still assigned to the old phone.
- Correct APN and mobile-network settings for the plan.
Have the exact error message, phone model, phone number, carrier account password or PIN, and IMEI or EID ready. Apple recommends having the IMEI or EID available for eSIM support. Share credentials only through the carrier’s secure app, website, or verified support channel; do not post them publicly.

When the manufacturer should diagnose the phone
Use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or service route after the carrier confirms that the line is correctly provisioned, the device is eligible and unlocked, and the SIM or eSIM is valid. Manufacturer service is especially appropriate when multiple known-good SIMs fail to register, the tray or reader is physically damaged, or the eSIM menu repeatedly crashes or disappears. A carrier cannot repair a damaged SIM reader, and a manufacturer cannot activate a line that the carrier has not provisioned.
Quick Recap
A quick decision sequence
- Record the exact message and whether calls, texts, and data work independently.
- Confirm the intended number and plan are enabled on the new phone.
- Complete the carrier’s SIM replacement, number-transfer, or eSIM process, including any required Wi‑Fi, QR code, or SIM-protection step.
- Check lock status and run the carrier’s model or IMEI compatibility check.
- For a physical card, reseat and inspect it; for eSIM, repeat the supported download flow without deleting profiles unnecessarily.
- Restart, apply carrier settings, verify coverage or outages, and use only the carrier’s APN instructions.
- Escalate with the error, model, IMEI/EID, and account details through a secure channel.
