Stop loading before the problem becomes a safety problem. A moving truck may be short on usable floor and ceiling space, at its payload limit, or unable to carry a large item through its doors. Check the truck’s posted ratings and rental agreement, then choose the least risky remedy: repack and prioritize, make another trip, change to a larger truck, use an explicitly approved trailer or other vehicle, hire movers, or defer some belongings.
First, identify what “too small” means
“Too small” is not one limitation. A truck can look full while remaining under its weight rating, or it can reach its weight limit with open space above and around the load. A sofa, appliance, or cabinet may also fit by volume but fail at the door, wheel well, ceiling height, or turning angle.
- Cubic-space limit: There is no safe place left for boxes or furniture.
- Dimensional limit: An item cannot pass through the opening or fit without unsafe tilting, crushing, or blocking access.
- Payload limit: The load is at or near the truck’s allowed cargo weight even though space remains.
- Load-security limit: Items could shift, fall, obstruct the driver, or prevent doors from closing and latching.
These limits require different solutions. More compact packing helps with volume, but it does not increase payload capacity. Tie-down straps can restrain cargo, but they cannot create more room or permit a heavier load.
Stop loading and check the truck’s actual ratings
Read the labels on the specific vehicle
Before adding anything else, inspect the label inside the driver’s door opening and the rental paperwork. U-Haul’s truck operator manual tells drivers not to exceed the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross axle weight rating (GAWR), and directs users to the label in the door opening. The exact truck, not a generic advertisement, controls your limit.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- GVWR: the maximum permitted total weight of the truck, occupants, fuel, and cargo.
- GAWR: the maximum permitted load on a particular axle.
- Payload: the cargo allowance stated for that vehicle or configuration.
Advertised cargo volume is not a substitute for these ratings. If you cannot determine the remaining payload, pause and ask the rental provider rather than estimating by appearance.
Do not use unsafe packing to make the load appear to fit
Do not stack boxes so high that they can fall into the cab, block mirrors, prevent doors from closing, or shift during braking. Do not wedge furniture against controls, emergency equipment, or doors. If an item requires force to install, leaves a door partly open, or makes the truck unstable, it is not safely loaded.
Repack the load only when capacity remains
Unload enough to see the structure of the load
When the truck is merely inefficiently arranged, take out the upper layers and create a clear plan before putting anything back. Keep a separate area for fragile, valuable, or temperature-sensitive goods so they are not buried or crushed.

Disassemble practical items
Remove legs, shelves, doors, or other detachable parts only when the manufacturer’s design and your tools make that safe. Bag and label hardware, protect finished surfaces, and keep fasteners with the item. Disassembly can reduce awkward dimensions, but it does not change the item’s total weight.
Keep fragile goods protected
Use proper padding and boxes, separate breakables from heavy items, and avoid placing weight on containers that can collapse. A tightly packed truck is not automatically a secure truck; every piece still needs support against sliding, tipping, or impact.
Prioritize what must arrive first
If the truck cannot carry everything, make the decision deliberately rather than leaving random items behind. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) advises prioritizing goods in advance when some may be left behind.

Compare the available transport plans
| Option | May suit | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Repack and prioritize | The arrangement is inefficient and the truck still has rated capacity | Remaining payload, dimensions, fragile goods, and load security |
| Second trip | A local move where time and rental terms permit another run | Rental duration, mileage, fuel, route, access, and schedule |
| Larger truck | A one-trip move and a suitable vehicle is available | Usable dimensions, payload label, availability, and total cost |
| Cargo trailer | The rental combination is explicitly approved for towing | Tow vehicle, hitch rating, trailer rating, cargo limit, contract, route, and weather |
| Another vehicle | Remaining items fit safely and are suitable for that vehicle | Vehicle payload, visibility, securement, drivers, and insurance terms |
| Professional mover | Self-hauling is impractical or delivery timing matters | Written cost, service type, pickup and delivery dates, and interstate registration |
| Store, donate, sell, or defer | Extra transport costs exceed an item’s value or urgency | Storage terms, delivery timing, replacement cost, and donation options |
Compare the plans on total cost, time, route distance, availability, payload and towing capacity, driving difficulty, delivery urgency, and damage risk. No single option is best for every move.
When a second trip is the sensible answer
A second run is often workable for a local move when the rental period and mileage allowance permit it. Confirm the return deadline, mileage charges, fuel requirement, loading access, parking, and whether the destination can receive another arrival. Allow time to unload and reload without rushing; hurried handling increases damage risk.
For a long-distance move, a second trip can add substantial driving time, fuel, lodging, and scheduling complexity. Compare those costs with a larger vehicle or professional service before committing. If the truck is already payload-limited, a second trip is safer than trying to make one overloaded run.

When to change to a larger truck
A larger truck can be the cleanest one-trip solution when the available vehicle has adequate usable dimensions and payload. Ask the provider for the specific truck’s interior dimensions, door opening, wheel-well constraints, payload label, rental price, mileage terms, and availability. “More cubic feet” alone does not establish that the truck can legally carry your load.

Before transferring cargo, inspect the replacement vehicle and update the rental agreement. Recheck axle and gross-weight limits after loading; moving items from one truck to another does not remove the ratings requirement.
Towing a cargo trailer: compatibility comes first
Do not add a trailer merely because a hitch is present. U-Haul says it calculates recommended trailer cargo weight using the specific tow vehicle, hitch rating, and trailer. The provider’s approval and the combination’s ratings must match your equipment and rental contract.
- Verify the tow vehicle, hitch, wiring, trailer rating, and permitted cargo weight.
- Confirm that the rental agreement allows the exact truck-and-trailer combination.
- Account for route grades, weather, braking, parking, and your own towing experience.
- Distribute cargo so the trailer remains stable and doors and latches close fully.
U-Haul states that towing a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer with its 26-foot truck offers 18% more space. That is a provider-specific comparison for that combination, not a general percentage for every truck and trailer.
If the trailer begins to fishtail
U-Haul advises stopping safely to reposition cargo if a trailer fishtails or whips. Reduce speed smoothly, avoid abrupt steering or braking, and move to a safe location before inspecting the load. Do not continue simply because the trailer is still attached.

Using another vehicle safely
A passenger vehicle, pickup, van, or borrowed truck can handle a small remainder only if the items fit without blocking the driver’s view, exceeding that vehicle’s payload, or creating unsecured projectiles. Check the vehicle’s rating, tie down cargo, close all doors and lids, and confirm that every driver and insurance arrangement permits the use.
Keep heavy pieces low and stable, protect upholstery and glass, and do not place loose objects where they can reach occupants during sudden braking. If the remaining item is unusually long, heavy, fragile, or awkward, a purpose-built vehicle or professional mover may be safer than improvising.
Secure the load before driving
Penske advises balancing cargo to reduce shifting and checking cargo securement during transport. Treat that as general commercial-rental guidance, not as a substitute for the requirements applying to your specific vehicle or jurisdiction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Distribute weight so one side or axle is not disproportionately loaded.
- Use suitable straps, padding, blocking, and covers for the cargo.
- Keep the driver’s controls, mirrors, exits, and required visibility clear.
- Close and latch cargo doors; never rely on a strap to hold a door that cannot close.
- Recheck securement after the first short section of driving and whenever conditions change.
If you cannot secure an item without exceeding a rating or obstructing the truck, remove it from the plan.
If you hired movers instead of driving yourself
Call the moving company or broker before pickup or delivery and ask what can be changed in writing. FMCSA lists options that may address a capacity problem, including space reservation, expedited service, exclusive use of a vehicle, and guaranteed service dates. Availability, prices, and conditions depend on the mover and your agreement.
Questions to ask before approving a change
- Will the mover send another vehicle, make a later trip, or leave specified items behind?
- What is the revised total price, including accessorial charges?
- Which pickup and delivery dates are guaranteed, and which are estimates?
- Who inventories, stores, protects, and ultimately delivers items not loaded?
- What service and liability terms apply to the revised plan?
For an interstate move arranged through a broker, FMCSA says the broker must use an interstate mover registered with FMCSA. Ask for the operating mover’s identity and registration information rather than relying only on the broker’s name.
A simple decision sequence
- Pause. Do not add cargo while you are unsure whether space, dimensions, payload, or securement is the limiting factor.
- Inspect. Read the vehicle label and rental contract; identify the remaining capacity and any awkward items.
- Repack if justified. Rebuild the load with large stable pieces first, protected fragile goods, and safe access.
- Prioritize. Separate arrival-critical items from later, stored, donated, sold, or replaceable goods.
- Price alternatives. Compare another trip, a larger truck, an approved trailer, another vehicle, and professional service.
- Confirm in writing. Before changing equipment or dates, obtain the provider’s approval and revised terms.
- Recheck before departure. Verify ratings, doors, visibility, balance, securement, route, weather, and delivery timing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the advertised volume: volume does not override GVWR, GAWR, payload, or door dimensions.
- Using a trailer by assumption: an attachable hitch does not prove that the tow vehicle, trailer, cargo, and contract are compatible.
- Overloading one axle or side: open space elsewhere does not make an uneven load safe.
- Leaving fragile goods for the last gap: the final space is often the least protected and most exposed to crushing.
- Changing vehicles without checking terms: a replacement truck, driver, or trailer can change the contract, insurance, and permitted use.
- Accepting a verbal mover promise: record the service, price, dates, inventory responsibility, and any items left behind.
Bottom line for a full truck
Do not force the last items into an overloaded or insecure vehicle. Determine whether the constraint is volume, dimensions, payload, or securement; then choose the plan that meets the truck’s actual ratings and your delivery needs. For a local move with time, a second trip may be simplest. For a one-trip move, a correctly rated larger vehicle may be better. A trailer or another vehicle works only when the equipment and contract explicitly permit it. If timing, distance, or risk makes self-hauling impractical, obtain a written plan from a qualified mover and decide what must arrive first.
