If a Motorola phone will not update, first check the update from Settings > (System > Advanced) > System updates > Check for updates, then retry on reliable Wi‑Fi with at least 75% battery and adequate free storage. A missing update can be normal: Motorola and Google release updates by model, region, carrier and rollout stage. If a download repeatedly fails or installation shows an error, record the exact message and contact Motorola or your carrier rather than factory-resetting the phone.
The right fix depends on whether the update is not offered, will not finish downloading, or fails during installation.
Identify the point of failure first
Read the message on screen and classify the problem before changing settings. Each stage has a different likely explanation and next action.

Check for the update using Motorola’s route

- Tap System, then Advanced if that option appears.
- Tap System updates.
- Choose Check for updates and follow the prompts if an update is offered.
Labels differ between Motorola models and Android versions. Some phones place update controls under About phone, and some omit the Advanced step. Use the labels actually shown on your device rather than assuming another model’s menu is identical.
While in About phone, note the exact model or variant, Android version and build number. Those details identify the software track support must investigate. Do not assume that two phones with similar names receive the same package.
Prepare the phone before trying again
Use a reliable Wi‑Fi connection
Connect to a stable, trusted Wi‑Fi network before checking or downloading. Motorola recommends Wi‑Fi to avoid mobile-data charges, and Google also recommends Wi‑Fi for Android updates. If the connection drops repeatedly, move closer to the access point or try another dependable network. Avoid beginning a large download while switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular data.

A failed attempt on one network does not establish that the update itself is defective, so make the connection dependable before drawing conclusions from another failure.
Charge to at least 75 percent
Google recommends charging an Android phone to at least 75% before an update. Connect the charger and leave the phone charging while you retry. A high charge does not guarantee installation success, but it removes a preventable interruption caused by low power.
Check available storage
Open Settings > Storage and inspect the free-space figure. Google warns that Android phones can start having problems when less than 10% of storage is free. That is a general device-performance warning, not a stated minimum amount of free space required for every Motorola update.
If storage is tight, use the Storage screen to identify unneeded downloads, media or apps and make room before retrying. Keep the distinction clear: freeing space can remove one cause of failure, but it does not prove that a particular update needs a fixed number of gigabytes.

Restart only as a simple retry
If the phone is responsive, restart it once and run the update check again. Google’s general Android update guidance lists restarting as a possible step when no update is found. Treat it as a low-risk retry, not a guaranteed cure for a failed download or installation.
Why no Android update may be available
A blank update screen does not automatically mean the phone is broken. Motorola says releases depend on the phone model, region, distribution channel, testing, carrier certification and requests from partners. Google likewise says schedules vary by device, manufacturer and carrier. Two owners can therefore receive the same release at different times, even in the same country.
Staged availability
Manufacturers commonly make software available in stages. Your phone may simply be waiting for its portion of the rollout. Check again later instead of repeatedly resetting the device. Support can confirm whether your particular model and software channel are included, but a general Motorola page cannot establish eligibility for an unspecified phone.

Repeatedly tapping “check for updates” cannot make an unreleased package appear. The useful question is whether the phone is eligible and whether the rollout has reached its model, region and software channel.
Carrier and regional certification
Carrier-sold phones may wait for carrier certification or configuration work before an update appears. Tell support the country or region and the current carrier, not just the phone’s retail name. A device purchased in one market may follow a different release schedule from an apparently identical device sold elsewhere.
Include the carrier even if you are currently using a different SIM from the one originally supplied. The software channel and certification history may still be relevant to the device’s update status.
Security update versus Android OS upgrade
Motorola distinguishes two kinds of releases:
- Security updates update protection and other components while the phone remains on its current Android version.
- Android OS upgrades move the phone to a newer Android version.
Do not treat every security patch as a new Android-version upgrade. If you are waiting for a specific Android version, ask whether that version is eligible for your exact model, region and carrier. When speaking with support, say whether you want the latest security update or a particular Android OS version; those are separate rollout questions.

What to do when the download is stuck or fails
Let Android retry its own way
Google says that when an update begins downloading but does not finish, the phone automatically tries again over the next few days and notifies you. Open that notification when it appears, or return to the system-update screen to check the status. This behavior means an incomplete attempt is not necessarily a final rejection.

Do not interpret the absence of an immediate second attempt as proof that the phone has abandoned the update. Leave the device usable, connected to dependable Wi‑Fi when practical, and respond to the notification or check the update screen again.
Retry after correcting the basics
Before the next attempt, confirm that Wi‑Fi is stable, the battery is at least 75% and storage is not critically low. If the phone remains usable, restart once, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and check the update screen. Do not keep starting downloads on an unreliable connection or with almost-full storage; those conditions make it harder to tell whether the problem is the rollout or the device.
Record the exact stopping point
Write down whether the failure occurs immediately, at a particular percentage, or after the download appears complete. Save the wording of any notification or error. “Stuck downloading” and “installation failed” are different support cases, and the distinction helps Motorola or the carrier choose the correct instructions.
A screenshot is useful if the message disappears after a restart. Also note whether the phone was charging and which Wi‑Fi network was in use. These details do not prove the cause, but they let support reproduce the conditions more accurately.
What to do when installation fails
An installation error requires more caution than a stalled download. Do not assume that deleting a hidden update file, forcing a reinstall or applying instructions for another Motorola model is safe. The available general guidance does not establish one universal Motorola method for removing a partial package or forcing a reinstall across all models.
Capture information before changing anything
- Exact model and variant, as shown in About phone
- Country or region and current carrier
- Android version and build number
- Free storage shown in Settings > Storage
- Whether the phone was on Wi‑Fi and charging
- The exact error text, preferably with a screenshot
- Whether the failure happened during downloading, verification or installation
Keep the phone connected to power while waiting for support instructions, but do not repeatedly interrupt an installation that is actively progressing. If the device returns to normal operation, use it normally while you gather the details above.
If the phone reports that installation is complete, verify the Android version and build in About phone rather than relying only on a notification. If it still shows the previous build, tell support that the package did not take effect.
Remember that an update is not treated as reversible
Motorola Support states: “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” That warning matters when considering unofficial packages or a forced reinstall. Do not install firmware intended for another model or assume that a failed update can simply be rolled back to an earlier version.

When to contact Motorola or your carrier
Contact Motorola support or the carrier when the basic Wi‑Fi, battery, storage and retry steps do not resolve the problem; when the same download fails repeatedly; when installation displays an error; or when you need to know whether a release has reached your model and carrier.
Give the agent the complete information listed above and describe the failure in one sentence, for example: “The phone is a [model and variant] in [region] on [carrier]; it is running [Android version/build], has [available storage], and the update stops during [download or installation] with this message: [exact text].” This prevents generic advice from being applied to the wrong software variant.
Google directs users with continuing problems on customized Android versions to the device manufacturer. Motorola can also account for its own rollout status, while a carrier can explain carrier certification or network-specific timing. Neither a general support page nor another owner’s experience can confirm eligibility for your individual device.

Why a factory reset should not be your first fix
A factory data reset erases the phone. Google warns that all data is removed and recommends backing up first; Motorola’s surfaced guide likewise warns that downloaded apps and user data are deleted. A reset is therefore a destructive recovery action, not a routine response to a missing, stalled or failed update.
The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a factory reset as the first-line fix for an unsuccessful system update. Use it only if Motorola or the carrier gives model-specific instructions after less destructive checks, and confirm that your photos, contacts, messages and other important data are backed up before proceeding.

- No update listed: verify the model, region and carrier, then consider staged rollout or certification timing.
- Download will not finish: switch to reliable Wi‑Fi, charge to at least 75%, check storage and allow Android’s automatic retry over the next few days.
