A missing update notification does not, by itself, mean that your Motorola phone is unsupported. Update delivery depends on the exact model, country or region, purchase channel, carrier, software version and whether you are waiting for an Android OS upgrade or a security patch. Check those details in order before assuming the phone has reached the end of support.
Start by recording the installed Android version and security-patch level, then ask the phone to check manually. Next, verify the exact model in Motorola’s Software Upgrade flow and its separate Android Security Updates selector. If the phone is listed but still has no update, contact Motorola or the carrier that supplied it. If it is not listed, Motorola says it will no longer receive security or OS updates.
Why a Motorola update may not appear
Motorola releases updates in stages rather than sending every package to every phone at once. The company says timing can vary by model, region, distribution channel and carrier or partner testing. Owners in the same region can therefore receive an update on different dates. Motorola attributes the work to testing many software versions across models and markets, carrier or partner certification, independent testing and requested changes.
That explanation supports checking again when your model is officially listed, but it is not a release-date promise. Motorola’s public plans can change, and carrier schedules can differ from Motorola’s general schedule.

Android upgrades and security updates are separate
An Android OS upgrade changes the platform version, such as moving from one numbered Android release to the next. A security update patches vulnerabilities while leaving the major Android version unchanged. A phone can receive one without immediately receiving the other, so check both statuses independently. Seeing a recent security patch does not prove that a new Android version is planned, and an OS upgrade does not establish how long security support will continue.
1. Check what the phone is running now
Before comparing your device with any schedule, capture its current software information. On many Motorola models, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Open Device details.
- Read Android version and the displayed security-patch information.
Menu names and their order can differ by model and software version. If you do not see that path, use the Settings search field for Android version, Security patch or System updates. Also record the complete model name shown on the About phone screen, not just “Moto” or a family name. Two phones in the same product family can have different update plans.

2. Ask the phone to check for an update
After recording the current state, perform an on-device check:

- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi if possible.
- Open Settings and choose System updates.
- Tap Check for updates.
- If an update is offered, read the version, size and installation notes, then follow the on-screen prompts.
Some Motorola software versions put the check under About phone; use Settings search for System updates if the menu is not where these steps show it. Wi-Fi helps avoid mobile-data charges. Motorola notes that, in some circumstances, a security update can download over mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable after an update notification, so review the connection and download prompt before accepting it.
Keep the phone charged and allow the installation to finish without interrupting it. Motorola states that an installed update cannot be downgraded. Check the version and other details before confirming rather than installing first and trying to reverse the change later.

3. Verify support for the exact model
Check the Android upgrade plan
Open Motorola’s Software Upgrade page and use the flow labeled Will my device receive the next Android upgrade? Enter the requested device information and identify where the phone was purchased. The carrier or retail channel can affect eligibility and timing, so do not skip that question or select a similar-looking model.
The result applies to the model and market information you provide. It should not be generalized to every phone with the same Motorola branding, to an unlocked edition sold elsewhere, or to a different carrier variant.
Check security support separately
Use Motorola’s Android Security Updates page and select the product. This is a separate check from the OS-upgrade flow and is the place to see the published security-support cycle for the selected device.

Motorola says availability varies by region. It also states that devices not listed on that page will no longer receive security or OS updates. The published information describes current plans, is not a commitment, and can change by region, product and carrier. Treat the page as a device-specific status check made on the date you view it, not as a permanent guarantee.

4. Interpret the result and choose the next action
Use the combination of the official listing and the phone’s own update check to place the problem in one of three situations.

Motorola does not publish a universal release date that applies to all phones. If the public pages provide no date, the accurate conclusion is that a date has not been established publicly for your specific device.
5. Account for carrier, region and purchase channel
The same model name can represent different software packages. A carrier-supplied phone may wait for carrier certification or use a schedule that differs from an unlocked retail unit. Regional firmware, regulatory requirements and partner testing can also affect when a package is released.
When checking a schedule, match all of these details:

- Exact model name and model number from About phone.
- Country or region where the phone is currently used.
- Carrier providing the cellular service.
- Whether the device was purchased from that carrier, a retailer or another channel.
- Installed Android version and security-patch date.
- Whether the missing item is an OS upgrade or a security patch.
If you moved the phone to another country or inserted a different carrier’s SIM, do not assume the update plan follows the phone physically. Confirm the original sales channel and the variant identified in Settings, then ask the carrier that supplied it which update path applies.
6. Recheck safely when the phone is eligible
For a model listed as eligible but not yet offered an update, occasional manual checks are reasonable. Use Wi-Fi, keep the battery charged and leave enough free storage for the package. A delayed notification can reflect staged distribution rather than a fault, but Motorola’s explanation does not specify a guaranteed waiting period.
Do not repeatedly erase the phone in an attempt to force a rollout. The official guidance cited here does not establish a factory reset as a universal remedy for an update that has not been offered, and a reset creates a backup and data-recovery burden without changing Motorola’s eligibility decision.

Contact Motorola support
Have the model, serial or IMEI if requested, region, carrier, purchase channel, Android version, security-patch date and any error message ready. Tell support that the device is listed in the relevant upgrade or security page but Settings does not offer the update. Ask whether the rollout has reached your specific variant and whether any account, enrollment or carrier condition is blocking it.

If the phone came from a carrier, contact that carrier as well. Provide the same identifiers and ask whether certification or staged distribution is still pending for your model. A carrier may have information that is not reflected in Motorola’s general schedule.

Use official Software Fix only as directed
Motorola’s update hub links to Software Fix, an official troubleshooting route. Use it only with the current compatibility requirements and instructions shown by Motorola. Do not treat third-party firmware, unofficial sideload packages or bootloader modifications as routine fixes; they can introduce security, data-loss and warranty risks and are not established here as manufacturer-supported solutions for a missing update.
What to document before asking for help
A concise record makes a device-specific answer possible. Save a screenshot or written note of the following:
- Model name and model number.
- Android version.
- Security-patch date.
- Exact wording shown after Check for updates.
- Country or region.
- Carrier and original purchase channel.
- Date you checked Motorola’s upgrade and security pages.
- Any download or installation error code.
This information prevents a support agent from comparing your phone with the wrong regional or carrier variant and clarifies whether the issue concerns an OS release, a security patch or an installation failure.
When the phone is genuinely out of support
If the correct model is absent from Motorola’s Android Security Updates selector, Motorola’s stated position is that it will no longer receive security or OS updates. If the model is listed but its published support period has ended, the same practical conclusion applies. Verify the regional and carrier variant first because an incorrect selection can produce a misleading result.
Once official support has ended, changing Settings, repeating checks or performing a factory reset will not create a new Motorola release. You can continue using the phone with normal security precautions, but treat unsupported software as a risk decision and avoid handling sensitive activity on a device that no longer receives security fixes. Choosing a replacement is a separate decision that depends on your budget, region and required support period; it is not a troubleshooting step that can make the current phone eligible.
