If your job offer is delayed or put on hold, ask the recruiter or hiring manager whether the offer is still active, what is pending, and when you will receive a firm update. Keep applying and interviewing, protect your current job and finances, and do not make an irreversible decision based only on an unconfirmed start date. Ask about a revised start date or other workable arrangement, and get any changed terms in writing.
First, find out exactly what is happening
“On hold” is not a precise employment status. The employer may have paused an approval, funding, requisition, background-check step, or start date. A hiring freeze or broader business decision may affect the role, but the employer may not disclose every internal detail. A hold does not prove that you were rejected, and it does not guarantee that the job will proceed.
Contact the person who delivered the offer, or the named recruiter if the hiring manager asked you to work through them. Keep the message factual and easy to answer. Ask four separate questions:

- Is my offer still active?
- What decision, approval, or event is currently pending?
- Does the delay affect the position itself, the start date, or both?
- When should I expect the next update, and how often would you prefer to communicate?
NACE recommends regular contact when an employer defers a start date, but there is no universal follow-up interval that fits every employer or country. Agree on a reasonable check-in point instead of sending repeated messages without a question the recipient can answer.

Keep your job search moving
Continue applying and interviewing
Until you have a confirmed start date and written terms, treat the offer as uncertain. Berkeley Career Engagement states that you are allowed to keep your job search going if a job offer has been delayed or rescinded. Continuing your search is risk management, not a sign that you are acting in bad faith.
Stay in contact with other employers, respond to interview invitations, and maintain applications that are already in progress. You can tell another employer that you are coordinating timing without disclosing confidential details or claiming to have an offer that you do not have.
Handle another employer’s deadline honestly
If another employer asks for an answer before the delayed employer can update you, state the exact date and ask whether it can provide a decision or timeline before then. You can also request a short extension. Do not invent competing offers or imply leverage you do not have; a false claim can damage trust and make a later negotiation harder.

Protect your current job and financial position
Do not resign solely on an uncertain start date
If you have not resigned, avoid giving notice until you understand that the new employer is ready to employ you on agreed terms. A verbal assurance that the role is “likely” to proceed is not the same as a firm start date. Check the written offer for conditions, approvals, contingencies, and any language about changing or withdrawing it.

If you already gave notice
Ask your current employer promptly whether your resignation can be withdrawn and whether your position remains available. The answer depends on your employer’s policies, your local law, and what has already happened; do not assume reinstatement is automatic. Keep the conversation professional and ask for any agreement in writing.
Calculate your financial runway
Work out how long you can cover essential expenses if the delay continues or the offer disappears. Include housing, insurance, debt payments, transportation, health costs, and the loss of benefits that would have started with the new job. This calculation helps you decide whether to accept temporary work, maintain your current role, accelerate applications, or set a personal deadline for waiting.
Get the status and next step in writing
A short written record prevents misunderstandings about what was said by phone. After a call, send a brief recap and invite correction. Ask for a written update if the employer changes the start date, compensation, work location, hours, responsibilities, or conditions.

Ask about workable alternatives
Once you know what is pending, ask whether there is a practical way to preserve the opportunity. These are discussion options, not rights or guaranteed concessions.
Set a revised start date
Ask whether the employer can provide a realistic date after the approval or funding decision. A date that is tied to a known event is more useful than an open-ended promise. If the date moves again, request a new written confirmation.
Consider temporary or adjusted arrangements
NACE identifies possible employer-side adjustments such as changed responsibilities, hours, location, or remote-work arrangements. Cambridge also suggests considering part-time or fixed-term work during a hiring-freeze situation. Whether any of these options is workable depends on the role, local rules, payroll and benefits systems, and your needs. Confirm compensation, hours, reporting line, duration, benefits, and the path to the intended position before agreeing.

If the original position is no longer approved, ask whether a comparable opening exists or whether the hiring manager can refer you elsewhere. An alternative role may have different duties, pay, location, or level, so evaluate it as a new offer rather than assuming the original terms carry over.

Compare a delayed offer with other options
When you have more than one possibility, compare the actual certainty and cost of each choice rather than focusing only on the advertised salary. Use the written information available and mark unknowns explicitly.

The right weighting is personal. Someone with limited savings may value a firm start date over a higher but uncertain package; someone who can remain employed may choose to wait for a role with better long-term fit. Write down your minimum acceptable conditions and a date for reassessing them.

Set a personal waiting plan
The employer’s next-update date is not the same as a commitment to hire. Create your own checkpoints so an open-ended hold does not silently control your decisions.
- Record the date of the latest update and the next date the employer agreed to contact you.
- Continue your applications, interviews, and conversations with other employers during that period.
- Recheck your finances, current-job status, and any competing deadlines before the checkpoint.
- At the checkpoint, ask whether the status, pending event, or expected date has changed.
- If the employer cannot provide meaningful information, decide what you will do without relying on the offer and communicate that decision courteously.
There is no source-supported universal number of days to wait. The useful boundary is the one that protects your income, obligations, and other opportunities.
If the offer is rescinded
Ask the employer to confirm the withdrawal and its effective date in writing. Request an updated explanation of any changed terms or conditions, but recognize that the employer may not provide every internal reason. Ask whether another approved role is available or whether the hiring manager can refer you to a colleague. Then continue your search rather than treating the rescinded offer as a temporary pause.
A university career-services office, professional association, or qualified career adviser can help you review communications and plan next steps. Do not describe a withdrawn offer as current when speaking with other employers.
Know when to seek local legal advice
Whether an employer can change or withdraw an offer, and whether you have a remedy, depends on your jurisdiction, the written terms, conditions attached to the offer, and the reason for the change. General career guidance cannot determine an individual claim.
Seek advice from a qualified employment lawyer or relevant public agency if you suspect discrimination or another unlawful reason, if you incurred significant reliance costs such as relocation expenses, or if the written offer contains terms you do not understand. Bring the offer, amendments, messages, dates, and a factual timeline. Avoid posting confidential details publicly while a dispute is unresolved.
Mistakes that make a delay harder
- Assuming a hold means rejection: ask for the status and decision trigger instead of guessing.
- Assuming a hold means the job is safe: keep applying until the employer confirms the role and start date.
- Resigning too early: protect your current position until the new arrangement is sufficiently certain for your circumstances.
- Sending daily “any news?” messages: agree on a check-in rhythm and make each message purposeful.
- Relying on a phone promise: recap material changes in writing.
- Inventing another offer: state real deadlines and facts only.
- Ignoring the cost of waiting: track savings, benefits, notice obligations, and lost opportunities.
- Making a legal conclusion from a general article: obtain advice tailored to your location and facts when the stakes are significant.
What to remember
A delayed job offer is a period of uncertainty, not a definitive answer. Get a clear status, identify what is pending, and obtain a concrete next-update date. Keep your search active, protect your current employment and finances, discuss revised terms only as possibilities, and document every material change. If the offer is withdrawn or you suspect unlawful treatment, preserve the records and obtain qualified local advice.
