If your iPhone will not install an iOS update, first identify the stage that failed: compatibility check, download, preparation, installation, or verification. Confirm that your exact model is eligible, free enough storage, connect to reliable Wi‑Fi and power, and retry. If the wireless update still fails, back up the iPhone and use Finder on a recent Mac or iTunes on Windows or an older Mac. Recovery mode is for an iPhone that a computer cannot recognize or that remains on the Apple logo without a progress bar.

Identify where the update failed

Apple’s update process detects an available release, downloads it, prepares the package, verifies it, and installs it. The remedy depends on which stage stopped. Use the symptom in this table to start at the right section instead of repeating the same download.

What you see Likely stage Start here
No update appears, or the iPhone says the release is unavailable Compatibility or update-server check Verify the exact iPhone model and retry the network check
Download is extremely slow or never begins Network, server connection, or storage Use Wi‑Fi, pause other downloads, and check iPhone Storage
Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update. Connection to Apple’s update service Retry on the current network, then another network
The progress bar moves slowly Download, preparation, or installation still in progress Keep the iPhone connected to power and watch for movement
The bar never completes, or the phone restarts repeatedly Incomplete installation or damaged update package Delete the downloaded update and download it again
A Mac or PC cannot see the iPhone, or the Apple logo remains without a progress bar Device or recovery state Follow Apple’s model-specific recovery-mode instructions

Apple does not publish a universal number of minutes after which an update is officially “stuck.” Download size, free storage, device performance, and network speed all affect the duration, so judge a failure by a motionless indicator, a repeated error, or a device that cannot proceed rather than by a fixed timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the update stages before troubleshooting

Knowing what the phone is doing helps prevent an unnecessary interruption. The iPhone first checks whether a release is available for its model. It then downloads the package, prepares it by unpacking files and checking available space, verifies the package, and finally installs the new system. A restart is normal during installation. A phone can therefore look inactive during preparation or verification even when no error has appeared.

  • Detection: the phone contacts Apple’s update service and determines whether your model is eligible.
  • Download: the package is transferred over the internet. Speed depends on the package size and the connection.
  • Preparation: iOS stages the files and makes room for the installation.
  • Verification: the device checks that the package is complete and valid.
  • Installation: the phone applies the update and restarts. Keep power connected through this stage.

An error at one stage does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault. For example, a failed detection check points you toward compatibility or networking, while a package that repeatedly fails after downloading is a reason to remove and redownload the update.

1. Confirm that your iPhone supports the iOS release

The latest iOS is not available for every iPhone. Apple changes the supported-device list with each major release, and an older model can continue working normally while being ineligible for a newer version. Identify your model in Settings > General > About, then compare it with Apple’s current compatibility list for the specific iOS release. Do not rely on a model list saved from an earlier year.

  • Check the model name and, if needed, the model number in Settings > General > About.
  • Read Apple’s current supported-device information for the release shown in Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If Apple does not list your model, no amount of storage, resetting, or cable swapping can install that release. Continue installing the newest version Apple offers for your phone.

Compatibility is separate from an update-server error. If your model is supported but the phone cannot check for an update, continue with the network and storage checks below.

2. Make enough room for the update

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and wait for the storage breakdown to finish. An update needs working space to download, unpack, verify, and install; Apple does not state one universal minimum amount that applies to every release and iPhone.

Use Apple’s built-in storage options

  • Turn on Offload Unused Apps from the iPhone Storage recommendations. Offloading removes an app but keeps its documents and data so the app can be reinstalled later.
  • Delete large apps, downloaded videos, podcasts, or other replaceable files manually. Review each item before removing it if it contains local data.
  • Allow the storage screen to finish calculating. The largest categories can change as iOS reclaims temporary files.

Apple says the phone may temporarily remove app data to make room without deleting your personal information. That does not mean every file is risk-free to remove: make a backup before deleting anything important, especially photos or locally stored documents. After freeing space, return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.

3. Fix download and “Unable to Check for Update” problems

A wireless update requires internet access and a reachable Apple update service. A slow download does not by itself prove that Apple’s servers are down.

For a slow or stalled download

  1. Connect the iPhone to a stable Wi‑Fi network rather than relying on a marginal cellular connection.
  2. Pause other downloads and streaming on the iPhone and, if possible, on the same network. Apple notes that download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed.
  3. Keep the iPhone near the Wi‑Fi access point and leave the Software Update screen available while it checks progress.
  4. If the connection drops, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and start the check again.

For an update-check or verification alert

If the alert exactly says Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update., first retry on the same Wi‑Fi network. If it returns, try a different Wi‑Fi network. A different network helps distinguish a local router, captive portal, filtering rule, or DNS problem from an issue on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the iPhone says the update is unavailable because it is not connected, confirm that Wi‑Fi shows as connected in Settings > Wi‑Fi, open a webpage to complete any sign-in page, and retry Software Update. If the check fails across multiple networks, stop repeating the same wireless attempt and use a computer update after making a backup.

4. Keep a seemingly stuck installation powered

During preparation or installation, the iPhone can appear inactive while it verifies files or applies changes. Keep it connected to a compatible power source and look for movement in the progress indicator. Apple gives no fixed “stuck after this many minutes” threshold because update size, available storage, and device conditions vary.

  • Do not disconnect power simply because the screen has been unchanged for a short period.
  • Do not force-restart a phone that is still progressing normally.
  • If the battery ran out, connect the iPhone to power and turn it on. Apple says this allows an update or restore that was interrupted by loss of power to complete.

A charging cable can help only when the phone lacks a reliable power connection. Connector type and power requirements differ by iPhone model; a cable cannot solve an unsupported model, insufficient storage, an unreachable update server, or a bad download.

5. Delete a failed update and download it again

An incomplete or damaged update file can prevent a second installation attempt. Remove that file, then obtain a fresh copy from Apple.

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Scroll through the list for the downloaded iOS update. It may be labeled with the iOS version.
  3. Tap the update, choose Delete Update, and confirm.
  4. Return to Settings > General > Software Update.
  5. Connect to Wi‑Fi and power, then download and install the update again.

If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or the same problem continues after a fresh download, move to a computer-based update. Do not delete personal content merely to remove an update package; only delete the item identified as the iOS update.

6. Update with a computer after backing up

Apple recommends backing up the iPhone before updating through a computer. A computer uses a different download path and can succeed when the wireless process cannot. Use Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later; use iTunes on Windows or on a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier.

Prepare the computer and iPhone

  • Make sure the computer has internet access and enough time to download the release.
  • Use a compatible USB cable and connect directly to the computer when possible.
  • Unlock the iPhone and accept the Trust This Computer prompt so the computer can communicate with it.
  • Make a current backup before selecting any update or restore command.
  • Do not use the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot as the computer’s internet connection. Apple says to connect the computer to another Wi‑Fi or Ethernet network first.

Finder on macOS Catalina or later

  1. Make a current backup of the iPhone to iCloud or to the computer.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible USB cable and unlock the iPhone if prompted. Approve Trust This Computer when the phone asks.
  3. Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar under Locations.
  4. Choose the General tab.
  5. Click Check for Update.
  6. Choose Download and Update, read the terms, and keep the iPhone connected until the process finishes and the phone restarts.

If Finder reports that the iPhone must be updated or restored, read the exact prompt before choosing an option. An update attempts to reinstall iOS while preserving data; a restore is a more destructive recovery action and should be used only when Apple’s instructions call for it and a backup exists.

iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier

  1. Back up the iPhone before connecting it.
  2. Open the current iTunes installation on a Windows PC, or iTunes on a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier.
  3. Connect and unlock the iPhone, then approve the trust prompt if it appears.
  4. Select the device button, open Summary, and choose Check for Update.
  5. Click Download and Update and leave the cable connected while iTunes downloads, verifies, and installs iOS.

Apple advises that a computer must not be using the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot for this operation. If it is, connect the computer to a different Wi‑Fi or Ethernet network first, then retry the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. What to do when the computer cannot recognize the iPhone

Try the simple connection checks before entering recovery mode:

  • Unlock the iPhone and accept the Trust This Computer prompt.
  • Reconnect the cable directly to the computer instead of through an unpowered hub.
  • Try another compatible cable or USB port if the connection repeatedly drops.
  • Confirm that Finder or iTunes is open and that the computer has a working internet connection.

If the computer still does not recognize the phone, or if the Apple logo remains on the screen for several minutes with no progress bar, use Apple’s current recovery-mode instructions for your exact iPhone model. The button sequence differs among models and can also depend on what the screen shows, so do not improvise a sequence from a different iPhone generation.

Recovery mode can offer an update or restore through Finder or iTunes. Choose the least destructive option Apple’s model-specific instructions permit, and understand that a restore erases the device. If the listed recovery steps do not resolve the problem, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider rather than repeatedly interrupting the phone.

Common mistakes that make an update failure worse

  • Using an old compatibility list: eligibility changes with each major iOS release, so check Apple’s current list for your exact model.
  • Deleting random personal files: remove replaceable content or use Offload Unused Apps, and back up before deleting anything important.
  • Assuming a slow bar is a failed bar: there is no universal time limit. Look for actual movement and keep the phone powered.
  • Repeating the same network attempt: try another Wi‑Fi network after a check error; if it fails on multiple networks, change to a computer update.
  • Disconnecting during installation: leave the cable and power connected until Finder, iTunes, or the iPhone reports completion.
  • Choosing Restore too quickly: an update is the less destructive computer option. Restore can erase the iPhone and should follow Apple’s recovery instructions and a backup.
  • Buying a cable as a universal fix: a compatible cable helps only with a power or physical connection problem. It cannot correct eligibility, storage, server, or verification failures.

Choose the right update path

Method Use it when Requirements and cautions
Wireless Software Update The model is supported and the phone has storage, Wi‑Fi, and power First choice for most users; troubleshoot the network and downloaded package if it fails
Finder You have a Mac running macOS Catalina or later Back up first; connect the iPhone by cable and use General > Check for Update
iTunes You have Windows or a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier Back up first; use Summary > Check for Update; do not use the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot as the computer’s connection

Before trying again: a safe checklist

  • Record the exact alert text and the iOS version the phone is offering.
  • Confirm the iPhone model is on Apple’s current compatibility list.
  • Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free space without deleting irreplaceable data.
  • Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi, pause other downloads, and complete any network sign-in page.
  • Connect the iPhone to power and leave it connected during preparation and installation.
  • If a previous package failed, delete it from iPhone Storage and redownload it.
  • Back up before using Finder, iTunes, recovery mode, or any restore option.
  • When escalating, note whether the phone is recognized by a computer, whether a progress bar is visible, and whether the error occurs on more than one network.

Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, published September 17, 2026, covers compatibility, storage, network checks, power, deleting and redownloading an update, and escalation. Apple’s Finder workflow applies to macOS Catalina and later; its iTunes workflow, published September 19, 2026, applies to Windows and macOS Mojave or earlier. Interface labels and supported models can change with later releases, so use the current instructions shown for your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my iPhone install the latest iOS?

The model may not support that release, the phone may lack working storage, the Wi‑Fi or Apple update-service check may have failed, or the downloaded package may be incomplete. Check compatibility first, then iPhone Storage, Wi‑Fi, power, and finally delete and redownload the update.

How do I fix “Unable to Check for Update”?

Retry on the current Wi‑Fi network, then try a different Wi‑Fi network. Confirm that the iPhone is actually connected and complete any network sign-in page. If the same alert appears across networks, back up and update with Finder or iTunes instead of repeating the same wireless check.

How much storage does an iOS update need?

Apple does not publish one universal minimum that applies to every iOS release and iPhone. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, use Offload Unused Apps, and remove replaceable downloads or apps while protecting important personal data.

How long should an iPhone update take?

There is no official universal time limit. Duration varies with update size, internet speed, available storage, and device conditions. Keep the iPhone connected to power and judge a problem by a motionless indicator or repeated error, not by a fixed number of minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I update my iPhone with a computer?

Yes. Use Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier. Back up first, connect the iPhone by cable, choose Check for Update, and keep it connected until the process finishes.

What if the update is not listed in iPhone Storage?

Return to Settings > General > Software Update and check again. If the update still does not appear or the issue continues after another download, use a backed-up Mac or PC update.

Should I force-restart an iPhone with a stuck progress bar?

Do not interrupt an update that is still progressing normally. Keep it powered and watch for movement. If the Apple logo remains for several minutes without a progress bar, or a computer cannot recognize the iPhone, follow Apple’s current model-specific recovery-mode instructions.

Will a new charging cable fix an update failure?

Only if the existing cable cannot provide a reliable connection or power. Connector and power requirements vary by iPhone model. A cable does not fix an unsupported model, insufficient storage, an unreachable update server, or a damaged download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is safer: Update or Restore in Finder or iTunes?

Choose Update when Apple’s instructions offer it; it attempts to reinstall iOS while preserving data. Restore is more destructive and can erase the device, so use it only when the recovery instructions call for it and you have a backup.

The Bottom Line

Work from the failure stage: verify that the exact iPhone model is supported, free storage, retry on reliable Wi‑Fi, and keep the phone connected to power. Delete and redownload a failed package before switching methods. If wireless updating still fails, back up and use Finder or iTunes. Reserve recovery mode or Apple Support for an unrecognized iPhone or an Apple-logo screen with no progress bar.
