If your browser reports “Resolving proxy,” shows ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED, or your connection suddenly appears to use a proxy, do not assume your device is infected. A proxy is an intermediary that handles traffic on your behalf, and it may be required by a workplace, school, VPN, security application, Wi‑Fi network, browser policy, or automatic configuration file. First determine whether the setting affects one browser, one device, or every device on the network; then inspect the relevant settings without removing a configuration that an administrator needs.
The safest order is: check whether the device is managed, compare another browser and network, review VPN or security software, inspect the platform’s proxy settings, and escalate an unexplained change to an administrator or qualified support. If a setting returns after you disable it, find the policy or application applying it instead of repeatedly switching the same control.
What routing through a proxy means
Microsoft Support defines it this way: “A proxy server in Windows routes your internet traffic through an intermediary instead of connecting directly from your device.” The intermediary can apply an organization’s access rules, cache content, inspect traffic, or provide a controlled route to the internet. Seeing a proxy entry therefore describes a network path, not a diagnosis of malware.
Proxy behavior can be configured in several places:

- The operating system, either globally or for a particular Wi‑Fi or Ethernet profile.
- An automatic discovery mechanism or a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) script.
- Manual HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS server details.
- A browser policy, extension, or application that is allowed to change proxy settings.
- A VPN or third-party security/network product.
- An employer’s, school’s, or other administrator’s management profile.
Those scopes matter. A browser-only symptom points you toward browser policy or an extension; every device on one Wi‑Fi network points toward the network or its administrator; a single device on several networks points toward local software or settings.
Start with a safe isolation check
1. Establish whether the device is managed
Is this a company, school, library, or otherwise administered computer or Chromebook? If so, a proxy may be intentional. Windows documentation says an organization can require a proxy and that its IT department may provide the setup script or server details. ChromeOS documentation likewise notes that a work or school Chromebook may prevent users from changing proxy settings.
Before changing a managed setting, ask the administrator what the expected configuration is. Removing it can block access to internal sites, authentication, filtering, or other services. If a browser displays a management notice or policies that you cannot edit, treat that as evidence of administrative control rather than a broken personal setting.

2. Compare browsers on the same device
Open the same site in a second browser. If only one browser fails or reports a proxy, inspect that browser’s policies, extensions, and application permissions. An extension or managed browser policy can set proxy behavior without changing the operating system’s general setting. If every browser is affected, continue with operating-system, VPN, security-software, or network checks.
3. Compare another network
Connect the device to a different trusted network, such as a phone hotspot or another Wi‑Fi service, when practical. If the problem disappears elsewhere, the original network, its sign-in portal, or its administrator may be involved. If it follows the device across networks, concentrate on local settings, applications, or management profiles. These comparisons identify the scope of the symptom; they do not by themselves prove its cause.
4. Check VPN and security applications
Review whether a VPN, firewall, web filter, parental-control tool, or other security/network application is active. Apple notes that VPN and security software can affect connectivity. Check the application’s own connection or proxy page, because a VPN may maintain proxy settings separately from the operating system. Do not permanently disable protection as a shortcut; if you test with a temporary pause, restore protection immediately and use the result only to decide where to investigate.

5. Restart, update, and check for a sign-in portal
Restart the device and, if you administer the network, restart the router. Install pending operating-system and browser updates. On public Wi‑Fi, open a normal web page and look for a required terms-of-service or sign-in page. A network that has not completed its portal sign-in can look like a proxy or connectivity failure even when no local proxy was added.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: inspect every proxy mode
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy.
- Review Automatically detect settings. Automatic detection can select a proxy without a manually entered server address.
- Under the setup-script area, check whether Use setup script is enabled and note the script address. A PAC script can choose different routes for different destinations.
- Under manual setup, inspect Use a proxy server, including the address, port, and any option that bypasses the proxy for local addresses.
- Compare what you find with changes you knowingly made. On a personal device, turn off an unneeded personal setting, save it, and test again. On a work or school device, confirm with IT before changing anything.
- Check your VPN application separately. Its proxy controls may not appear in the Windows page and may be reapplied whenever the VPN connects.
If Microsoft’s page does not contain the server or script details you were given, contact the organization that supplied the device or connection. Do not guess a server address or port: an incorrect manual entry can produce the same connection errors as an unexpected proxy.
macOS: check the active network service
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Network.
- Select the network service you are using, such as the current Wi‑Fi connection.
- Choose Details > Proxies.
- Review Auto proxy discovery and Automatic proxy configuration. If automatic configuration is enabled, record the PAC URL and determine whether it came from your organization or network.
- Review enabled HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS proxies, including their server, port, and bypass list.
- If you recognize a personal setting that is no longer needed, change it and reconnect. If the setting was supplied by an organization or returns after you change it, ask the administrator or inspect the profile and application responsible.
macOS stores settings per network service, so check the service actually carrying traffic. A proxy configured for one Wi‑Fi service may not apply to Ethernet or another Wi‑Fi network.

Chromebook and ChromeOS: distinguish errors from enforced policy
Google’s troubleshooting guidance associates a slow page or search, the message “Resolving proxy,” and ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED with proxy-related problems. To inspect the active connection, open the network’s settings and select Proxy. Review whether the connection uses direct access, automatic detection or configuration, or a fixed proxy.
A work or school Chromebook may prevent you from editing this page. ChromeOS can also receive proxy behavior from enterprise policy or from apps and extensions that are allowed to modify proxy settings. Chrome enterprise documentation describes direct, auto-detect, and fixed-proxy modes and explains that permitted apps or extensions can configure the proxy.

On a personal Chromebook, review recently installed extensions and remove only those you recognize and no longer need, then retest. If the proxy comes back, identify the policy or extension applying it before making further changes.

Android and Pixel: inspect the individual Wi‑Fi network
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Select the connected Wi‑Fi network.
- Choose Edit > Advanced options.
- Find Proxy and review whether it is set to none, automatic configuration, or a manual server.
- Save a change only when you know the intended configuration, then reconnect and test.
Google notes that labels and available options vary by Android version and device manufacturer. If these labels are absent, use the device maker’s support instructions. Also check any VPN, security, or filtering application that may apply a route outside the Wi‑Fi profile.
How to interpret common outcomes
The proxy is required at work or school
Keep the configuration and ask IT for the official setup script, server, port, and bypass requirements if you need to recreate it. A managed proxy may be necessary for internal websites or policy-compliant internet access.
Only one browser reports the problem
Compare its extensions and policies with a browser that works. An extension that can modify proxy settings is a likely control point. On an organization-managed browser, policy may be intentional and non-editable; ask the administrator rather than forcing a local override.

Complete the network’s captive-portal sign-in and ask the network administrator whether a proxy or filtering gateway is expected. Changing each device individually will not fix a network-wide configuration.
The setting returns after you turn it off
A returning setting means something is applying it again: a management profile, browser policy, extension, VPN, security product, or network configuration. Note when it returns—for example, after reboot, browser launch, or VPN connection—and use that timing to identify the controlling component. Repeatedly toggling the same switch without finding that component will not resolve the underlying cause.
Nothing explains the change on a personal device
The reviewed platform guidance does not establish that a proxy setting alone proves malware, and it does not identify a specific threat from this symptom. Update the operating system and browsers, review recently installed applications and extensions, and consult trusted platform security guidance or qualified technical support. Preserve the exact setting, error text, and time of occurrence so support can investigate without relying on memory.
