Secure the email account linked to the game first, then use the platform’s official recovery process. After you regain access, replace reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), secure every linked account, check purchases, and ignore anyone offering recovery through an unsolicited message. The exact verification steps and outcome depend on the game service and your region.
Do these things first
- Use a trusted device. Use a device you normally control and a known home or mobile connection if possible. Type the platform’s address yourself or open its official app. Do not use a recovery link from an unexpected email, chat message, social-media direct message, or pop-up.
- Secure the email account attached to the game account. If you can still sign in, change its password to a unique one and turn on MFA. If you cannot access that mailbox, recover it through the email provider before attempting game-account recovery. Access to the registered email is often central to proving ownership.
- Start the platform’s hacked-account or cannot-sign-in flow. Look for labels such as “hacked,” “stolen,” “compromised,” or “can’t sign in.” If automated recovery stops, open a support case through the same official site or app.
- Change reused passwords elsewhere. Any other account using the exposed password—including console, social, shopping, or email accounts—should receive a different password. Sign out unfamiliar sessions when the service provides that control.
- Check money immediately. Review the game platform, console store, and payment-provider transaction histories. Report unrecognized charges to both the platform and the payment provider using their official channels. There is no single refund procedure that applies to every service.
Do not delete evidence before you have recorded it. Save security-alert emails, changed-account details, transaction IDs, dates, unfamiliar usernames, and screenshots. These details can help an ownership review, but never send your password or a one-time code to an alleged helper.
How to tell what happened
A changed password is only one possible symptom. Treat the account as compromised if you see an unfamiliar sign-in, a changed email or sign-in ID, a new linked account, missing currency or items, messages you did not send, or purchases you do not recognize. A password-reset email you did not request can also indicate that someone is testing access.
Check the email account’s security page as well as the game account. Look for forwarding rules, newly added recovery addresses, unknown devices, and password or MFA changes. An attacker who controls the mailbox can repeatedly reset the game account even after you change its password.

Use the exact service recovery route
Recovery methods are not interchangeable. The service may require control of the registered email, a previously linked sign-in, purchase information, or a separate ownership form. The examples below describe the published routes; follow the current instructions shown by the service when you begin.

These services do not publish a comparable recovery-success rate, so no service can honestly be ranked as easiest to recover. A support agent may be unable to restore access or reverse every change. Treat any stated processing estimate as specific to that service and route, not as a general promise.

What to include in an ownership request
Answer the official form accurately and consistently. Useful information can include the original email address, former usernames or online IDs, approximate account-creation period, linked console or social accounts, order numbers, subscription details, and previous security notifications. Use only information requested by the platform. Never “prove” ownership by sending a password, MFA code, full payment-card number, or an identity document to an unverified contact.

Check the original mailbox for notices that identify the change, but do not click links in suspicious messages. Open the platform’s site independently and quote the notice details in the support form.

Special instructions for common situations
You still control the game account email
Change the email password first, enable MFA on that mailbox, and then reset the game password from the official sign-in page. Review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and linked accounts before you resume playing. If the platform offers a “sign out everywhere” control, use it after the password reset.
The attacker changed the game-account email
Do not keep requesting resets to the old address if the service says it is no longer registered. Use the hacked-account or account-recovery form and provide the former email and any ownership details requested. Secure the mailbox anyway, because it may contain the change notification or evidence needed by support.

You have a linked console or social sign-in
Use the linked sign-in only if it was already connected before the compromise and the platform explicitly offers it as a recovery option. Once inside, remove unfamiliar links and secure the linked provider with a new password and MFA. Do not add a new account merely to bypass verification.

Capture the order number, date, amount, currency, and item name. Report the transaction through the game platform and separately through the payment provider. Keep the account secure while the report is reviewed; an attacker may use a saved payment method again if access remains open.

Characters or items are missing
Document what changed and when, then ask the publisher through its official support channel. Restoration is not guaranteed. For example, Bungie states that it does not manually restore deleted characters or replace in-game items that were lost or dismantled. Other games may have different policies, so do not assume that a recovered login means every virtual item or progress state will return.

- Create a unique password. Use a long password that has never been used for another service. A password manager can generate and store it.
- Enable the strongest sign-in option offered. Prefer a passkey or MFA method supported by the platform. If an authenticator app, security key, or backup method is available, configure it rather than relying only on an emailed code.
- Protect linked accounts. Console, social, email, and identity-provider accounts can provide alternate paths into the game account. Give each a unique password and MFA.
- Review every security setting. Check the email address, sign-in ID, online ID, recovery methods, trusted devices, active sessions, linked accounts, and authorized applications. Remove anything unfamiliar and report unauthorized changes.
- Store recovery codes safely. Keep them offline or in a secure password manager separate from the account. Do not paste them into chat or send them to anyone who contacts you.
- Check purchases again. Confirm that no new transactions appear after recovery and remove payment methods only if doing so fits your normal account use and the platform’s policy.
Recognize and avoid recovery scams
People who lose access are attractive targets for a second scam. An unsolicited “agent,” gaming-group administrator, server owner, or social-media account may claim it can restore the account for a fee. Do not pay a recovery service, and do not give that person your password, one-time code, recovery code, session token, or backup email.
Steam warns that gaming groups and game-server administrators do not need Steam account information. Epic says it asks for a password only on official Epic login pages. The safe pattern is the same for every platform: navigate to the known official site or app yourself, confirm the address before signing in, and continue only through its published support process.

If recovery fails
- Confirm that you are using the correct regional support site and the correct account identifier. A platform may have separate flows for a game publisher, a console account, and a store account.
- Try the official self-recovery route once more from a clean, trusted device, checking spam and junk folders for legitimate messages.
- Submit the official ownership form with consistent information. Do not create multiple contradictory cases; duplicate submissions can make the history harder to follow.
- Secure every connected account and payment method while you wait. A failed first attempt does not make the attacker’s access safe.
- Keep the case number and all correspondence. If the platform denies recovery, read the stated reason and use only its documented appeal or follow-up route.
Do not promise yourself that access, purchases, characters, or items must be restored. Verification rules, response times, and restoration policies vary by service, game, region, and the evidence available.
