Stop picking, pressing, or peeling the raised area. The factory-applied film on a foldable’s inner screen is a specialized part of the folding display assembly, not automatically a disposable cover-screen accessory. Contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider for your exact model and country and ask for both a film replacement and a display inspection. Do not apply household adhesive, use heat or blades, or install an unapproved inner-screen protector while you wait.
What bubbling or peeling usually means
A bubble, lifted edge, or line in the inner screen’s surface layer can be a failure of the protector rather than the flexible display underneath. Samsung’s service guidance explains that scratches, bubbles, and lifting may occur in the film and can be mistaken for display damage. That distinction matters because the film is designed to flex with the phone, while the display beneath is a more complex and costly component.
On Galaxy Z devices, Samsung describes the main-screen film as purpose-designed for foldables; its U.S. guidance identifies the factory-applied material as flexible TPU. Samsung Korea describes a layered construction consisting of a replaceable top film, a protective layer, ultra-thin glass, and the AMOLED display. A defect in the top layer can therefore look dramatic without proving that the panel has failed.
The advice is different for a protector you bought for the outside cover display. The warnings in this article concern the pre-installed film on the foldable inner screen. If you are unsure which surface is lifting, treat the inner screen as the factory film and ask an authorized technician to identify it.

What to do immediately
- Stop manipulating the edge. Do not pick at the lifted corner, push bubbles toward the hinge, or repeatedly open and close the phone to test the area. Samsung warns that removing the film or applying a non-official film can cause touch abnormalities or screen damage. Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide likewise warns against picking at the film’s edges.
- Close the phone normally and protect it from pressure. Keep grit, liquids, coins, and other objects away from the inner screen. Do not place anything between the two halves before folding. Avoid pressing directly on the bubble.
- Record the condition. Photograph the bubble or peeling edge with the phone open and closed, note when it appeared, and write down the model, country of purchase, purchase date, and any warranty or service-plan information. This helps a service center distinguish film wear from impact, liquid, or frame damage.
- Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair channel. Request an inspection and ask whether the film can be replaced for your exact model in your country. A service center can check the display, touch response, hinge area, and frame before applying new film.
- Follow the provider’s handling instructions. If the edge suddenly spreads, the display image changes, or touch input becomes unreliable, stop using the inner screen and arrange professional inspection rather than attempting a temporary repair.
How to tell a film problem from a possible display problem
You cannot safely confirm the condition of a foldable display by lifting the film yourself. The following signs are useful for describing the problem to support, not for authorizing a home repair.
Signs that may be limited to the film
- A localized bubble, wrinkle, scratch, or edge lift in an otherwise normal image.
- A visible separation that follows the protector’s edge or appears after extended use.
- Normal colors, brightness, and touch response outside the affected surface.
Signs that require prompt professional inspection
- Lines, black spots, flickering, discoloration, or a spreading dark area in the image.
- Touch input that fails, activates without contact, or behaves differently near the affected area.
- Cracks, dents, a bent frame, hinge damage, liquid exposure, or a sudden change after a drop.
- A bubble that grows rapidly or appears together with unusual heat or repeated shutdowns.
Samsung Korea’s 8 March 2022 service article specifically says film damage can be mistaken for display damage and recommends a nearby service center. That article is an explanation of the layered screen, not a universal diagnostic test. A normal-looking picture does not make independent film removal safe, and an abnormal picture cannot be attributed to the film without an examination.
Why removing the factory film is risky
The inner protector is bonded and aligned for a screen that bends along a hinge. Pulling it can transfer force into the ultra-thin glass or the display layers beneath, especially where the film has already lifted. An uneven replacement can also interfere with touch sensing or create new bubbles at the fold.

Samsung UK’s guidance, updated 22 October 2024, says the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip main-screen film is official film designed for foldables and warns that removal or application of a non-official film may cause touch abnormalities or screen damage. Samsung’s U.S. support page states: “To avoid damaging the screen, we recommend you don’t remove the screen protector.” That is the manufacturer’s recommendation for its devices, not a blanket statement about every foldable made by every company.
Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide says not to pick at the film’s edges, remove the pre-installed protector, or apply a third-party protector, because those actions may harm the foldable display. Apply that precise warning to Pixel Fold devices; check the current instructions for another manufacturer rather than assuming the same service policy.
Do not use a knife, fingernail, solvent, heat gun, hair dryer, household glue, or a “bubble repair” tool. The manufacturer material does not provide a safe home procedure for these methods, and an apparent cosmetic fix can make a later service claim harder to assess.

Choosing a repair route
Use the phone maker’s support site, warranty channel, or authorized-repair locator for the country where the phone is being serviced. Ask five questions before sending the device or visiting a shop:

- Is the exact model covered by an official inner-film replacement service?
- Will the technician inspect the display, frame, and hinge before applying new film?
- Is the quoted amount a one-time charge, a recurring price, or a promotional term?
- Does eligibility depend on purchase date, authorized point of sale, or absence of other damage?
- Is the service walk-in, appointment-based, or mail-in, and how long will the phone be unavailable?
An independent shop may be able to work on a foldable, but the cited manufacturer guidance supports authorized application because the film and alignment are model-specific. If you consider an independent provider, ask what parts and tools it uses, whether it has experience with your exact model, and how it handles a display that is already damaged. Do not let a provider remove the factory film without first documenting the device’s condition and explaining the risks.

What the technician should check
A proper visit is more than smoothing a bubble. The provider should identify whether the visible layer is the factory film, inspect the panel for cracks or separation, test touch response across the inner screen, and look for frame or hinge damage that could cause a new film to lift. Ask the technician to record pre-existing damage and explain whether a film replacement is appropriate or whether the display assembly needs further work.
Samsung’s U.S. description says its specialists use alignment equipment and advises against self-application. Samsung Germany’s terms similarly require a certified service partner and say the film is not sold as a replacement part. These details are why an online inner-screen film or a generic kit is not an equivalent substitute for an authorized service.

- Keep the phone closed when it is in a pocket or bag, but do not force it shut if something is trapped inside.
- Use a clean, soft, dry cloth only for loose surface dust; do not scrub the lifted section or introduce liquid at the edge.
- Back up important data while the phone still operates normally, using the manufacturer’s normal backup method.
- Avoid environments where grit, sand, or moisture can enter the hinge or the opening in the film.
- If the display becomes unreadable or touch fails, stop relying on the inner screen and tell the repair provider exactly what changed.
These precautions reduce additional stress; they do not repair the film. Do not tape the edge down or add another layer over it, because the cited guidance does not establish those as safe fixes.

Common mistakes to avoid
Peeling “just the loose corner”
A loose corner can continue into bonded areas around the fold. Removing only the visible section still counts as independent removal and can damage the screen or create touch problems.
Buying a generic inner-screen protector
Foldable films must tolerate repeated bending and match the phone’s touch and hinge geometry. Google expressly warns Pixel Fold owners against third-party protectors, and Samsung warns against non-official film on Galaxy Z devices. Wait for model-specific professional guidance.
Assuming a free replacement applies everywhere
The U.S. one-time allowance, German 24-month terms, and UK service-center recommendation are separate regional policies. Your purchase channel, date, model, and existing damage can change eligibility.

Continuing to fold through a damaged area
Repeated movement can enlarge a separation or expose the surface beneath it. Arrange service promptly if the bubble is growing, even when the image still looks normal.
What is and is not established about failure rates
The manufacturer support material cited here does not provide an independent study or a population-wide failure rate for bubbling or peeling. The published numbers are service terms, not evidence that a particular percentage of phones will develop the problem. Treat the condition as a device-specific service issue and rely on an inspection rather than a probability estimate.

A bubbling or peeling inner-screen film is often a replaceable protector problem, but it can resemble damage to the foldable display.
