If your college counseling center has a long waitlist, offers only a few sessions, or cannot provide the type of care you need, you still have practical next steps. Ask the center for an assessment and a written plan, involve another campus office in navigating academic and care options, and seek community treatment when campus services are not sufficient. If you are in immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911. In the United States, call, text, or chat with 988 for immediate emotional-crisis support—even if you are not currently thinking about suicide.
Start with a specific request to the counseling center
Contact the counseling center through its published appointment process and describe exactly what is not working. You do not have to prove that your situation is “serious enough” before asking what support exists.
Use a direct script
You can say: “I need more frequent or longer-term care than the center offers,” “I am waiting for an appointment and need support while I wait,” or “I need help finding an outside therapist.” Ask the staff member to assess your needs and explain the available route rather than simply placing your name on a waiting list.

- Urgent or same-day appointments.
- Brief individual counseling while you arrange continuing care.
- Group counseling, skills groups, workshops, or support programs.
- Case management or help locating community clinicians and psychiatrists.
- A cancellation list or a brief check-in during a wait, if the center offers either.
- What to do when the center is closed, including after-hours or weekend options.
The University of South Dakota describes same-day, brief individual, group, case-management, and 24/7 support options. Johns Hopkins describes goal-oriented care and clinical case management that can help with community referrals when a student wants weekly or more intensive treatment. Those are examples for eligible students at those institutions, not services every college provides.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Leave the conversation with a follow-up plan
- Write down the name and role of the person who helped you.
- Record the next action: an assessment, referral call, group intake, or follow-up appointment.
- Ask when you should follow up if you hear nothing.
- Put that date and the center’s phone number in your calendar.
Use another campus office when care affects school or daily life
A counseling center is not always the office that handles academic disruption, leave questions, housing concerns, or coordination among services. Ask a dean-of-students office, student-care or case-management team, student health office, residence-life staff member, disability or accessibility services, or an academic adviser which office handles your situation.
What a student-care office may do
The University of Illinois CARE Center says its staff connect students with campus resources and lists academic difficulty related to physical or mental health among reasons to contact it. It also describes help with medical withdrawal, re-entry, and absence letters. These are institution-specific procedures, not universal rights or guaranteed outcomes at other colleges.
Questions to ask before relying on an academic process
- What academic adjustments or leave options exist?
- Which documentation is required, and who can provide it?
- What deadlines apply, and are there separate deadlines for dropping a course, withdrawing, or returning?
- Who will receive health information, and what privacy rules apply?
- What happens to housing, financial aid, athletics, or immigration-related enrollment requirements if you take leave?
An office can explain procedures, but it cannot promise that you qualify for a particular accommodation or that a request will be approved. Get the policy and deadline in writing.

Look off campus for ongoing, specialized, or psychiatric care
If you need weekly therapy, a specialist, medication management, or care that continues beyond the counseling center’s session limit, ask the counseling center or student health office for a referral list. Request help finding an in-network clinician, a community mental-health clinic, or a psychiatrist. The University of South Dakota and Johns Hopkins both describe referral or case-management assistance for students whose needs exceed their campus model.
Verify a provider before booking
- Confirm that the clinician is licensed to provide care where you will be physically located during the appointment. This matters for telehealth when you return home or travel.
- Ask whether the provider accepts your insurance, whether the plan is in-network, and what deductible, copay, coinsurance, or self-pay amount applies.
- Ask for the session fee and cancellation policy in writing.
- Check the earliest appointment, expected ongoing availability, and whether appointments continue during school breaks.
- Confirm the format (in person, video, or phone), office location, and accessibility.
- Ask whether the clinician treats the concerns you want help with and whether their approach, language, culture, or identity-related experience fits your preferences.
- Ask how records, releases, referrals, and communication with your college are handled. Do not assume campus staff automatically receive information from a community provider.
Local availability, cost, insurance coverage, and provider quality cannot be inferred from a university example. Verify each detail directly with the clinician and your insurer before starting care.

Use 988 for immediate emotional distress in the United States
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be contacted by call, text, or chat. You do not need to have current suicidal thoughts to use it. A counselor can listen, provide immediate support, and share resources. 988 is crisis support, not ongoing therapy. Its Terms of Service state: “The 988 Lifeline is not a healthcare provider or practitioner of mental healthcare treatment and is not a substitute for professional health care.”
If phone contact does not work
If someone in suicidal crisis cannot connect by phone, the Lifeline advises trying text or chat. Its official FAQ also lists 911 as an option. The Lifeline’s coverage FAQ says 988 serves all areas of the United States, including places without a local participating crisis center.
When to call 911
Call 911 for a medical emergency, imminent physical danger, or when emergency medical intervention is needed. If possible, stay with the person, remove immediate means of harm, and tell the dispatcher the person’s location and what is happening. Do not delay emergency help while waiting for a campus appointment.

Make a short-term plan while you seek care
A small written plan can prevent a stalled referral from becoming your only option.
- Choose one trusted person—friend, family member, resident adviser, faculty member, or staff member—and tell them you are trying to get help.
- Ask whether they can sit with you while you call, help track referrals, or accompany you to an appointment.
- Write down the next campus contact, the next off-campus call, and the date for each follow-up.
- Record what to do if the counseling center is closed, including 988 and local emergency services.
- Keep prescribed medication, crisis numbers, and important appointment details accessible.
Peer support, sleep, food, exercise, and other coping practices may help you get through a wait, but they are not substitutes for professional treatment when you need clinical care.
What historical access data can—and cannot—tell you
National access figures are useful context, but they are not a current estimate for your college. The National Council on Disability’s 2017 report summarized a 2017 STAT survey and combined findings from surveys with different respondent groups and years.

| Finding reported by the National Council on Disability | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 97% of responding four-year colleges reported waitlists ranging from a few days to more than a month, depending on the time of year. | A historical survey summary from 2017, not a present-day rate for all colleges. |
| 24% of campus mental-health centers offered services outside normal 8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekday hours. | A 2017 survey finding; current hours vary by institution. |
| Just over 1% offered services six or seven days a week. | A historical finding that should not be used to predict your campus schedule. |
| 88% of colleges in the cited STAT survey reported offering free counseling services. | Fees, eligibility, and what “free” covers vary; confirm your college’s policy. |
These numbers explain why a waitlist or limited schedule is common in older survey data, but they do not tell you whether your college has same-day appointments, groups, referrals, or after-hours care now.
A simple escalation path
Use this sequence when the first answer does not solve the problem:
- Today: Contact the counseling center, state the gap in care, and request an assessment and interim options.
- Within the next business day: Ask student health, the dean of students, or a care team about navigation and academic procedures.
- During the wait: Request community referrals and verify insurance, cost, licensing, availability, and fit.
- If distress becomes acute: Call, text, or chat with 988 in the United States; call 911 for a medical emergency.
- At the follow-up date: If no one responds, contact the named office again and document the unanswered request.
You are entitled to ask what help exists, what it costs, how long it may take, and what to do next. If the campus cannot provide the needed level of care, use its staff to connect you with a service that can, while keeping emergency resources available for immediate danger.
