If your carrier rejects an iPhone trade-in, first obtain the exact inspection reason in writing, then preserve your evidence before sending or surrendering anything else. Check Activation Lock, ownership, device identity, physical condition, shipment timing and promotion rules against the original offer. Request a written reinspection or supervisor review, and ask whether the original promotional value can be restored. If the carrier changes the value, decide quickly whether its terms let you reject the revision and recover the phone.
Why an iPhone trade-in is rejected
A trade-in quote is normally conditional. The carrier or its inspection vendor makes a final decision after receiving the phone, and the result can differ from the online questionnaire or a store employee’s initial assessment. Common failure points are:
- Condition: cracked glass, damaged frames, missing buttons, broken camera glass, liquid damage or wear beyond the program’s definition.
- Device identity: the received make, model, storage, color, carrier or IMEI does not match the submitted details.
- Activation Lock: Find My iPhone or another anti-theft feature remains enabled.
- Ownership or payoff: the phone is not yours to transfer, still has an unpaid balance, or otherwise fails the program’s ownership rules.
- Timing: the phone was shipped after the stated deadline or arrived too late.
- Account or promotion eligibility: the line, upgrade, activity period or other requirement does not qualify for the advertised credit.
A rejection can mean no value at all, a lower one-time payment, or loss of a promotional bill-credit tier. Those outcomes are different, so your first objective is to identify exactly which criterion failed.

Do not rely on a phone agent’s summary. Save the email, app message or letter that states the inspection result, including the date, reference number, revised value and any return deadline. If the notice lists several reasons, ask the carrier to identify which one caused the rejection and which ones merely changed the value.

Before mailing another device, accepting a revised offer or allowing a return window to expire, assemble an evidence file:
- The original trade-in quote, promotion page or order confirmation, including the quoted model and value.
- Photos of every side of the iPhone, the screen powered on, and the screen displaying its IMEI or serial number.
- A photograph or video showing Find My iPhone disabled, when possible.
- The shipping receipt, tracking history, delivery scan and package weight if the carrier recorded it.
- Every email, chat transcript, case number and store receipt.
- The name or location of any store that accepted the phone and the date of acceptance.
Keep the original files and do not edit the timestamps. They can establish what condition and device identity existed before shipment, while tracking and weight records help distinguish a genuine inspection issue from a shipping or warehouse error.
Step 2: Check lock, ownership and device identity
Remove Activation Lock
Find My iPhone and other anti-theft controls must be disabled for most trade-ins. Sign out of the Apple Account on the iPhone and turn off Find My iPhone before erasing it. If the phone no longer powers on, T-Mobile says the feature can still be disabled through the iCloud account. Apple, T-Mobile and Verizon all treat an enabled lock as a reason to reduce or eliminate trade-in value.

After removal, confirm in your account that the iPhone is no longer listed as an active device. Keep a screenshot or recording of that status. Do not send the phone again until the carrier confirms that the lock requirement has been satisfied.
Verify ownership and payoff
Confirm that the device belongs to you and that any installment balance or financing restriction has been cleared. A carrier may reject a phone that remains tied to another owner or account. Save the payoff confirmation and the account page showing the device status.

Match the submitted device exactly
Compare the IMEI or serial number, model, storage capacity, color and carrier with the original submission. Verizon’s terms specifically require validation of these fields. A different storage tier or a replacement phone with another IMEI can trigger a lower value even when the exterior looks identical.
Step 3: Compare the phone with the carrier’s condition definition
Use the carrier’s written condition categories rather than your own description of “good” or “working.” Inspect the display under bright light, run the cameras, buttons, speakers, microphones, charging port and biometric functions, and look for liquid-damage indicators if the program references them. Photograph any disputed area at close range and from a distance.

- Frame and back: bends, dents, exposed parts and severe wear may fail a condition test.
- Cameras and buttons: broken lens glass, nonworking buttons or camera faults are common disqualifiers.
- Power and function: a phone that cannot power on or complete inspection may be ineligible unless the program provides another inspection route.
- Liquid damage: evidence of moisture can disqualify the device even when it starts normally.
T-Mobile states that screen damage may receive partial value but does not qualify for promotional value. AT&T reserves the right to reject or adjust a quote after inspection. If you are uncertain, AT&T says a participating store may provide a final condition determination before you surrender the device.
Step 4: Check deadlines and account eligibility
Deadlines are measured differently by each program: some use the shipment date, others the arrival date or the number of days after a trade-in kit is delivered. Compare the carrier’s stated rule with your tracking record.

Promotion rules can also require a particular line, upgrade or device activity period. A store accepting the phone does not necessarily override the warehouse inspection or the written promotion terms.

Step 5: Request a written reinspection or supervisor review
Contact the trade-in department through the carrier’s documented channel and ask for a case number. Submit one complete package rather than separate messages:
- State the original quote and promotion name.
- Quote the exact rejection or adjustment language.
- List the IMEI or serial number and the date shipped.
- Attach condition photographs, the powered-on image, lock-removal proof and shipping records.
- Ask the carrier to identify the failed criterion, explain the inspection evidence and confirm whether the original promotional value can be restored.
- Request a written response and the deadline for accepting or rejecting a revised value.
If a store accepted the iPhone, include the dated receipt, employee name if shown and store location. Explain that the store assessment and warehouse result conflict, but recognize that the carrier’s terms may make the warehouse inspection controlling.
Keep the tone factual. Do not erase or resend the device while the case is open unless the carrier gives written instructions, because a second shipment can create a new identity, timing or chain-of-custody dispute.
Can you get the iPhone back?
The answer depends on the program and the point at which you accepted its value. Apple’s customer guidance says that when it sends a lower revised value, you may reject it; Apple then cancels the trade-in, returns the old device and charges the original trade-in value to the card under its stated process. Follow the rejection deadline in that notice.
Verizon says accepted trade-ins are final and the device is returned after the credit is accepted. Ask Verizon for its current return procedure before accepting a revised credit. A carrier’s willingness to investigate a dispute does not by itself guarantee that the phone can be recovered.

For any program, ask these questions in writing: Has the device already been recycled or resold? What event makes the trade-in final? Who pays return shipping? What address will be used? Is there a deadline to reject the revised value? Save the answers with your case number.
What to do when the trade-in credit is missing
A missing credit is not automatically a rejection. First check the correct wireless line, the promotion identifier and the bill period in which the offer was enrolled. AT&T says promotional credits may take two or three billing cycles to appear. Compare each bill with the trade-in confirmation and note the first month in which the credit should have posted.
Credits can stop after an early payoff or an early upgrade under AT&T’s stated terms. If the device was accepted but the credit is absent after the allowed posting window, escalate with the trade-in confirmation, inspection result, installment agreement and the affected bill pages. Ask for a correction that identifies each missed month, not merely a general account adjustment.

Verizon
Verizon’s FAQ identifies condition differences, a different received device, an enabled Find My iPhone or other activation lock, submission after 30 days and promotional ineligibility as reasons for a lower value. Its terms validate make, model, memory, color, storage, carrier and condition. Some existing-customer promotions require 60 consecutive days of activity. Verizon says accepted trade-ins are final, so clarify the return policy before accepting the credit.
AT&T
AT&T describes quoted values as conditional and subject to adjustment or rejection after inspection. A participating store may provide a final condition determination before surrender. Shipment is generally due within 30 days. Promotional credits can take two or three bill cycles and may stop after early payoff or an early upgrade. AT&T’s terms reference binding arbitration, so review the agreement before starting a court case.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile says damage can reduce value or create a fee. Screen damage may receive partial value but not promotional value. Find My iPhone and other anti-theft features must be disabled even when the phone will not power on; the iCloud account can be used to disable the feature. When an app-based inspection cannot be completed, ask whether an in-store inspection is available.
Apple Trade In
Apple’s terms allow Apple or its vendor to refuse, cancel or limit a trade-in and to revise the quote when inspection differs from the description, Find My iPhone remains enabled or the device arrives late. Apple’s customer process allows rejection of a lower revised value, followed by cancellation and return of the old device under the stated card-charge procedure.
Escalate when ordinary support fails
Move to written escalation after the first review produces no clear answer. Use the executive or dispute channel identified in your customer agreement, attach the complete evidence file and state the remedy you want: reinstatement of the quoted promotion, payment of the missing credit, or return of the device if the program permits it.

The FCC says it reviews such complaints and, in many instances, serves them on the provider. The FCC process does not replace contractual requirements, so check arbitration, notice and appeal provisions before filing in court or with another forum.
How to compare another trade-in channel
Do not compare a carrier’s headline promotional value with a one-time offer until the terms are normalized. Evaluate:
- Net value: subtract fees, required payments and any value lost when you upgrade or pay off early.
- Return rights: determine whether a changed offer lets you recover the phone and who pays shipping.
- Inspection standard: compare definitions for cracks, wear, liquid damage and functionality.
- Deadlines: distinguish the quote-expiration, ship-by and arrival dates.
- Payment timing: contrast an immediate credit with monthly bill credits that may take multiple cycles.
- Eligibility: check line, account-age, activity, upgrade and ownership requirements.
Write those terms beside the quoted amount. The highest advertised number is not necessarily the highest amount you will actually receive.
