If your car gets stuck in snow, first protect the people inside: assess traffic danger, stay sheltered when the storm makes leaving unsafe, and prevent exhaust from being blocked before running the engine. Make the vehicle visible, request help, and try a brief, gentle recovery only if you can do so without dangerous exposure or exertion. If it does not work quickly, stop and wait for assistance.
1. Pause and check whether the car is in immediate danger
Take a moment to assess where the vehicle is and what is happening around it. A car stuck in an exposed travel lane, near moving traffic, or in another immediately dangerous position calls for help rather than a risky attempt to dig out. Contact emergency services or the relevant road authority if there is an immediate threat, someone is injured, or local emergency procedures apply. The right number and roadside procedure depend on your location; there is no single procedure for every U.S. jurisdiction.
Before opening a door or stepping outside, consider traffic, wind-driven snow, visibility, temperature, and how far you would need to go. A short trip outside can become hazardous when conditions are poor. Keep occupants together and sheltered unless a safe nearby place is clearly reachable and the route is safe.
Make the first decision about people, not the car: Is anyone injured? Is the vehicle exposed to moving traffic? Is there a clearly safe shelter nearby? Can you contact help? Those answers determine whether to wait, request urgent assistance, or consider a short recovery attempt. If circumstances change—for example, snow begins drifting around the vehicle or visibility worsens—reassess rather than continuing with the original plan.

2. Stay sheltered and manage carbon monoxide risk
In a winter storm, staying with the vehicle is generally safer than walking away through snow and wind. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises motorists caught in a storm to stay in their vehicle: worsening visibility and cold can make it difficult to find the way back or reach safety. Do not leave simply because help is taking time; weigh the actual route, traffic, and weather first.
If you need the engine for warmth, clear snow away from the exhaust pipe before starting it. Snow blocking the exhaust can allow dangerous gas to enter the vehicle. NWS guidance recommends running the engine for about 10 minutes per hour and opening a window slightly while it runs. These are general winter-storm instructions; follow your vehicle’s instructions and any local emergency guidance as well. Never run the engine in an enclosed space.
Check the exhaust area again if snow is blowing or accumulating. Do not trade one danger for another by spending a long time outside in severe weather: if you cannot clear it safely, prioritize shelter and contact help rather than running the engine with a blocked exhaust. The key is to treat exhaust clearance and ventilation as part of the decision to use the engine, not as a one-time task you can forget while snow continues to move around the car.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the NWS interval as general guidance rather than an instruction to keep the engine running continuously. If occupants need warmth, plan around short periods of operation and ventilation, while keeping the tailpipe clear. Vehicle-specific instructions and local emergency directions may differ, so follow those when available.
3. Make the vehicle visible and ask for help
If you have phone service, call for assistance and share your location if you can. Give the clearest location information available, such as a road name, direction of travel, nearby landmark, or location-sharing pin. Use the phone to contact emergency services for immediate danger and roadside assistance when appropriate; availability and response times vary by area.

Use visibility measures that do not put anyone in traffic or unsafe weather. NWS recommends turning on the dome light at night while the engine is running, tying a bright cloth to the antenna or door if available, and raising the hood after the snow stops. Warning devices can also help alert approaching drivers, but set them out only when you can do so without exposing yourself to traffic or dangerous conditions. Do not leave the vehicle just to place a marker if the route or roadside is unsafe.
Choose signals that are practical in the conditions. A phone call or location share can tell a responder where to find you; a bright cloth or dome light can help make the car easier to see. The hood signal is specifically for after snowfall stops, not a reason to go outside during active, dangerous weather. If you cannot safely place a warning device, stay in the vehicle and focus on contacting help and remaining visible from inside.

There is no reason to attempt to free the vehicle if doing so would expose you to moving traffic, require prolonged outdoor work, or involve strenuous shoveling or pushing in the cold. NWS warns against overexertion in winter conditions. A brief attempt is reasonable only when the car is away from immediate traffic danger, you can work safely, and you have a simple method to try.
| Choice | When it may make sense | Main limits |
|---|---|---|
| Brief, cautious recovery | The vehicle is in a safe position; conditions allow a short effort; snow can be cleared and traction material is available. | Stop if the tires spin, the work becomes strenuous, visibility worsens, or the attempt requires prolonged rocking. AAA cautions that extended rocking can damage an automatic transmission or clutch. |
| Stay with the vehicle and wait for help | Cold, heavy snow, poor visibility, traffic, or the route to shelter makes leaving unsafe; or a short attempt has not worked. | Keep the vehicle visible, contact help where possible, and manage exhaust carefully if the engine is needed for warmth. |
This is a safety decision, not a contest to see whether the car can be freed. AAA’s recovery suggestions are practical options, not a guarantee that self-recovery is suitable for every vehicle or situation. The sources do not establish that one traction material works best in all conditions.
Think about the costs as well as the possible benefit. Clearing a small amount of snow and trying gentle movement may be a short, manageable task; heavy shoveling, repeated pushing, or prolonged rocking adds exposure and effort while increasing the chance of overexertion or vehicle damage. Traction aids can help with an attempt, but they do not change the need to stop if the wheels spin or conditions are unsafe.

5. If the situation permits, try a gentle recovery
AAA’s suggested sequence focuses on removing snow that prevents the vehicle from moving and adding traction. Keep the attempt brief and controlled. Do not stand directly behind powered wheels if someone is helping push; gravel, sand, or ice can be thrown backward.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Clear space around the tires. Remove snow around the tires and from beneath the vehicle where it is preventing movement. Clear snow near the exhaust as well, especially before running the engine.
- Add traction if you have it. AAA lists sand, cat litter, traction mats, and floor mats in a pinch. Use what is available without spending excessive time outside. These are options, not a tested ranking; the guidance does not establish one as universally superior.
- Use gentle accelerator pressure. Try to move smoothly rather than applying force. If the wheels spin, ease off; continued spinning is not helping the attempt and can make the situation worse.
- Consider only slow, limited rocking. AAA describes slowly rocking the vehicle as an option, but warns that prolonged rocking may damage the automatic transmission or clutch. Stop rather than repeating the maneuver for an extended period.
- Stop at the first sign the attempt is unsafe or ineffective. If you are getting cold, tired, or exposed to traffic or worsening weather—or gentle movement does not free the car—return to shelter and seek help.
Do not let the presence of a shovel or traction aid persuade you to leave a sheltered vehicle when conditions are dangerous. Equipment can make a short, safe attempt possible; it cannot make an unsafe location or route safe.
Keep the attempt simple: clear only the snow that is obstructing movement, place the traction material you have, then try gentle movement. If the tires spin, ease off rather than applying more accelerator. If a helper is pushing, keep people clear of the path behind powered wheels because loose gravel, sand, or ice may be thrown backward. Avoid turning a limited attempt into repeated hard acceleration, strenuous digging, or extended rocking.
6. Stop, shelter, and escalate when recovery does not work
If the car remains stuck after a brief attempt, or the next step would involve strenuous work, prolonged exposure, or unsafe proximity to traffic, stop. Contact roadside service if available. AAA advises requesting service if safe shelter is reachable; in extreme cold or heavy snow, it also advises staying with the vehicle and warning passing traffic when that can be done safely.
Do not assume that walking to find help is safer than waiting. Make that choice only after considering whether shelter is genuinely nearby, the route is visible and passable, and traffic and weather permit the trip. If those conditions are not clearly favorable, stay with the vehicle, keep occupants sheltered, and use your phone to request assistance where possible.

As you wait, continue to make decisions based on changing conditions. Keep the vehicle as visible as you safely can, conserve your effort, and do not resume a recovery attempt simply because time has passed. If the vehicle’s position creates an immediate threat, or anyone is injured, contact emergency services or the appropriate road authority. For less urgent situations, roadside service may be the practical next step where it is available.
AAA’s guidance to warn passing traffic is conditional on being able to do so safely. Do not stand in or near a travel lane to signal drivers, and do not walk into blowing snow to reach a better position. Staying sheltered and reachable is preferable when visibility, traffic, or weather makes warning others hazardous.

A small emergency kit can make it easier to stay warm, communicate, and attempt a limited recovery if conditions allow. NWS and AAA include these items among useful winter supplies:
- A small shovel for clearing snow around and beneath the vehicle.
- Traction material, such as sand, cat litter, or traction mats.
- A flashlight, blankets, or extra clothing.
- Food and water.
- Communication supplies, including a charged phone.
Keep supplies accessible and know where they are before a storm. Their purpose is to support safer decisions—not to encourage leaving the car or attempting a recovery when weather, traffic, or exertion makes it hazardous.
A compact shovel is useful for the specific job of clearing snow around the tires and beneath the vehicle; traction mats are one possible aid, alongside sand, cat litter, or floor mats in a pinch. The available guidance does not rank these items by performance, so choose and carry what is practical for your vehicle and trip. A flashlight, blankets or extra clothing, food, water, and communication supplies support waiting as well as a brief recovery attempt. Having equipment is preparation, not a reason to take risks in a storm.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do if my car gets stuck in snow?
First assess whether the car is in immediate danger and whether anyone is injured. Stay sheltered if leaving is unsafe, contact emergency services for immediate danger or roadside help when appropriate, and keep the vehicle visible. Only try a brief recovery if you can safely clear snow, add traction if available, and use gentle accelerator pressure. Stop if the wheels spin, the work becomes strenuous, or conditions worsen.
Should I stay in my car if I’m stranded in a snowstorm?
Generally, yes. The National Weather Service advises staying in the vehicle because wind-driven snow, cold, and poor visibility can make it difficult to reach safety or find the car again. Leave only if safe nearby shelter is clearly reachable and the route, traffic, and weather make the trip safe.
How do I get my car unstuck without spinning the tires?
If conditions are safe, clear snow around the tires and beneath the vehicle, add traction material such as sand, cat litter, traction mats, or floor mats in a pinch, and apply gentle accelerator pressure. Ease off if the tires spin. A brief, slow rocking attempt is an option, but prolonged rocking can damage an automatic transmission or clutch.
How long should I run my car if I’m stranded in the snow?
National Weather Service winter-storm guidance recommends running the engine about 10 minutes per hour for warmth, with a window open slightly while it runs. Clear snow from the exhaust pipe first, check that it remains clear if snow is accumulating, and never run the engine in an enclosed space. Follow vehicle-specific and local emergency guidance as well.
The Bottom Line
Put occupant safety first: stay with the vehicle when the storm makes leaving unsafe, clear the exhaust before running the engine, and make the car visible while requesting help. Attempt only a brief, gentle recovery when conditions allow; if it fails or becomes hazardous, stop and wait for assistance.
