Photograph the package and deck, keep every piece of packaging and your order records, then contact the original seller in writing as soon as possible. Describe the physical damage—not disappointment with a randomized graphic—request a specific remedy, and preserve the entire exchange. If the seller does not resolve it, use the marketplace’s complaint process and ask your payment provider about dispute options before any applicable deadline.
1. Stop and preserve the condition
Do not ride, sand, press, glue, drill, or otherwise repair the deck before the seller has reviewed the complaint. A repair can make it harder to show what happened during shipping or manufacture. If the board appears structurally compromised, set it aside where nobody will step on it and ask the seller whether it should be returned or retained.
Keep the carton, mailer, labels, inner padding, blind bag, and any other material exactly as received. The packaging can show impact, crushing, punctures, moisture, or inadequate protection. Do not throw away a sealed bag merely because you want to inspect the graphic; photograph its condition first.

2. Build a complete evidence record
Photograph the shipment
Take well-lit, in-focus photos before moving or repacking anything. Include:

- The outside of the parcel from several angles.
- The shipping label, tracking number, and any damage or delivery notation.
- All internal packing materials and how the deck was positioned.
- The sealed blind bag, if it is still sealed, including tears or crushed areas.
- Close-ups of every scratch, crack, dent, chip, warp, delamination, finish defect, or other damaged area.
- At least one image showing the entire deck so the close-ups can be matched to a location on the board.
Use the original files rather than edited screenshots. If your phone records a date, retain that information. A short video that slowly shows the whole package and deck can supplement still images, but it should not replace clear photographs.
Save transaction documents
Download or screenshot the order confirmation, receipt, product listing, advertised condition, delivery date, tracking history, and the seller’s return or defective-merchandise policy. Keep the order number and the name of the marketplace or retailer. Federal Trade Commission complaint guidance recommends collecting purchase documents and retaining copies of what you send, so store your photos and messages in one folder rather than relying on a disappearing chat window.
3. Contact the seller promptly and in writing
Use the retailer’s or marketplace’s official support channel. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Contact the seller immediately if you run into problems with a seller on an online marketplace.” A written report creates a timeline and lets you attach the evidence.
Include the following in your first message:
- Order number and item name.
- Delivery date and, if relevant, the date you opened the parcel.
- A short, factual description of the physical damage and where it appears.
- Photographs of the parcel, packing, blind bag, and deck.
- The remedy you want: replacement, refund, or another specific resolution.
- A question about whether the deck should be returned, retained, or repacked, and who pays any return shipping.
State the requested outcome clearly instead of asking only whether something can be done. For example: “The deck arrived with a crack through the tail and a crushed corner. I am requesting a replacement or, if that is unavailable, a full refund. Please provide return instructions and confirm whether you want the damaged deck sent back.” Keep copies of your message, attachments, case number, and every response. If a phone call is unavoidable, send a follow-up email recording what was agreed.

4. Read the policy for this exact order
Blind-bag terms and defective-item procedures are not universal. A final-sale statement may address ordinary returns, opened packaging, or an unwanted design; it does not by itself tell you how a seller will handle a deck that arrived physically damaged. Check the policy attached to your order, the product page in effect when you bought it, and any terms for your location.
Examples of retailer-specific language
One Zumiez listing for a Girl blind-bag deck says the designs are random and that opened bags cannot be returned. Skate Warehouse separately says defective merchandise is subject to inspection and asks customers to contact it about return procedures for a product they deem defective, while also identifying blind-bag products as final sale for ordinary returns. These are examples of two retailers’ terms, not a rule for every seller or jurisdiction.
Describe the problem accurately as damage on arrival. Do not claim that the random design is defective simply because it is not your preferred variant. Conversely, do not let a “no returns once opened” sentence stop you from reporting a crack, crushed edge, or other condition that existed when delivered. Ask the seller to explain how its policy applies to the physical damage and follow the instructions it gives in writing.

Your first decision is usually between a replacement and a refund. Consider safety, availability, return logistics, and whether the seller can replace the deck without changing the blind-bag assortment terms.

Do not agree to a partial credit or sign a release until you understand what it covers. If the board is cracked, delaminated, badly warped, or otherwise appears unsafe, do not ride it while waiting for a response. The available evidence does not establish a skateboard-specific structural test, so ask the seller for handling and return instructions rather than declaring the deck safe yourself.
6. Understand what “blind bag” changes
A blind bag controls which graphic or finish you receive; it does not guarantee that every physical condition is acceptable. For example, a Zumiez listing for one Girl collaboration states a 70% chance of the standard design, a 20% chance of a silver-foil version, and a 10% chance of a gold-foil version. The same listing gives dimensions of 8.25 inches wide by 31.975 inches long and says the deck ships without grip tape applied. Those figures describe one product’s assortment and specifications, not all blind-bag decks.
Use the odds to explain a variant you received, not to argue about shipping damage. Receiving the standard graphic when you hoped for foil is generally a preference issue under the listing’s random-assortment terms. A split ply, crushed nose, deep gouge, or other transit-related defect is a separate complaint. Photograph the sealed bag before opening whenever possible; once opened, the seller may have a harder time determining whether the packaging protected the board, even though the physical-damage report should still be made promptly.

Use the marketplace process
If the seller ignores the message, refuses to address the condition, or misses a promised remedy, open the marketplace’s buyer-protection or complaint case. Follow its stated deadline and upload the same photographs, order records, policy excerpt, and message history. Explain the timeline in date order: delivery, discovery of damage, seller contact, and the response or lack of response.

Ask the payment provider about a dispute
If the purchase was paid by credit card, contact the card issuer promptly and ask whether the facts qualify for a dispute. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance discusses a 60-day period for the billing-error process it describes, measured from the statement containing the charge. That period and procedure do not automatically apply to every payment method or every damaged-item claim, so ask the issuer which rule and documentation apply to your transaction. Debit cards, digital wallets, and other services can have different processes and deadlines.
Continue preserving the seller and marketplace correspondence while a payment inquiry is open. Do not submit contradictory descriptions of the damage; provide the same factual account and identify any replacement, refund, or partial credit already offered.

A strong complaint distinguishes observable facts from assumptions. “The parcel had a crushed corner and the deck has a matching dent” is more useful than “the seller shipped junk.” Record when you first saw the damage, whether the blind bag was sealed, and whether any part of the parcel was wet or torn. Avoid guessing who caused the damage unless the evidence shows it.
State what you have done with the item: for example, “The deck has not been ridden or repaired and remains in the original packaging.” If you already opened the bag, say so accurately and explain that the damage was discovered during inspection. Honest, consistent details help the seller, marketplace, or payment provider evaluate the claim.

9. Know the limits of a universal answer
The exact remedy depends on your country or state, the seller’s terms, the product listing, the type of damage, the payment method, and whether the seller or marketplace has a buyer-protection program. No single policy guarantees a refund, replacement, or return-shipping reimbursement for every damaged blind-bag deck. Consumer-protection rules can also differ by location, so this process is practical guidance rather than a determination of your legal rights.
No independently useful published statistic establishes how often blind-bag skateboard decks arrive damaged. The 70%, 20%, and 10% figures above are randomized-design odds from one listing, not damage rates. Treat any claim about frequency with caution unless it identifies a credible measurement and its conditions.
10. A concise message template

The deck has not been ridden or repaired. I am requesting [replacement/refund/other remedy]. Please confirm whether you want the item returned or retained, provide instructions, and advise who covers return shipping. I have kept the packaging and can provide the receipt and tracking information.”
Replace the bracketed text with your actual details before sending; do not leave placeholders in the submitted message.
Bottom line
Preserve the evidence first, report the physical damage promptly in writing, request a defined remedy, and follow the exact policy and deadlines tied to your order. Blind-bag randomness and final-sale language explain unwanted designs, but they do not eliminate the need to report a deck that arrived damaged. If the seller will not resolve the matter, escalate through the marketplace and ask your payment provider about the correct dispute route without assuming that one deadline or remedy fits every transaction.
