First determine exactly what was exposed. A receiving address is public information and normally creates a privacy concern; a private key or recovery phrase is a spending credential and must be treated as compromised. A device infection, stolen password, or incorrectly sent transaction requires a different response.

Do not publish or paste a private key or recovery phrase into comments, support chats, websites, or “recovery” forms. Use the decision guide below to contain the risk without assuming that every wallet warning means your bitcoin has already been stolen.

Start with an exposure inventory

Write down what another person, website, app, or attacker could actually see. Do not copy any secret into your notes if they are stored online. The distinction matters because Bitcoin.org defines an address as information used to receive bitcoin, while private keys authorize spending and a recovery phrase can restore the wallet.

What may have been exposed What it generally reveals First response
Receiving address Payments sent to that address and its public transaction history Use a fresh wallet-generated address for future receipts; treat the issue primarily as a privacy problem
Transaction ID or public wallet descriptor Publicly visible transaction or wallet information, depending on the descriptor Do not treat it as a spending credential; review what information it links to your identity
Wallet password Potential access to an encrypted wallet on the device or service where it is used Change it through the official wallet or service route and investigate the device; do not reuse it elsewhere
Private key Authority to spend the bitcoin controlled by that key Assume compromise and follow the wallet’s official procedure for moving funds to a newly created wallet
Recovery phrase A way to restore the corresponding wallet and access its bitcoin Assume the wallet is compromised; never share the phrase again and use official documentation from a clean, trusted route
Phone, computer, or wallet app Possibly the secrets held or entered on that device Stop entering wallet secrets there until you have followed the wallet maker’s incident guidance

Never ask a stranger or a purported support agent to “check” a phrase or key. Bitcoin.org says that no legitimate person, business, or support team needs your recovery phrase.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

If only your Bitcoin address was exposed

An address is designed to be shared so someone can pay you. Seeing it does not give a person the private key needed to spend the bitcoin associated with it. The practical risk is privacy: Bitcoin transactions are stored publicly and permanently, and anyone can inspect an address’s balance and transaction history, as Bitcoin.org explains.

What an observer can learn

  • Payments received at that address and payments sent from it when the wallet links them on the public ledger.
  • The balance visible at that address at the time of inspection.
  • Patterns that may connect the address with other addresses, a person, a business, or a purchase.

What to do next

  1. Stop reusing the exposed address for new receipts.
  2. In your wallet’s receive screen, generate a new address for each future payment when the wallet supports that practice.
  3. Tell regular payers that your receiving details changed, using a channel you already trust.
  4. Review where the old address was posted and remove it from places where removal is possible, while recognizing that copies and blockchain records remain.

A fresh address limits additional linkage; it does not erase the old address’s public history or make past transactions private. The wallet’s implementation and its method of obtaining blockchain information also affect privacy, so consult its official documentation for settings specific to that wallet.

If a private key or recovery phrase was disclosed

Treat the secret as compromised even if you do not see an unauthorized transaction. Anyone who obtains a private key can authorize a spend from the controlled output, and anyone who obtains a recovery phrase can restore the corresponding wallet. Do not wait for a balance to change before acting.

Immediate rules

  • Do not send the phrase or key to support, a moderator, a “synchronization” page, or a person promising to recover funds.
  • Do not type the secret into a browser form, screen-sharing session, or untrusted wallet application.
  • Do not move the old phrase onto a new phone, cloud drive, screenshot, or another online location.
  • Use a clean, trusted route to find the wallet’s official instructions. The exact safe transfer procedure depends on the wallet type and its backup design.

Moving to a new wallet safely

The general objective is to create a new wallet with a new secret and transfer any remaining funds before an attacker does so. Because wallet implementations differ, follow the official documentation for creating the replacement wallet, confirming its backup method, and signing the transfer. If the original device may be infected, do not use it to enter the new recovery phrase. An offline or hardware signing arrangement may reduce exposure during signing, but it does not make the disclosed old secret safe again.

If funds have already left the compromised wallet, preserve the transaction details and contact the relevant exchange or service through its known official support path. There is no central Bitcoin authority that can reverse a confirmed transaction, and no source establishes a guaranteed recovery process.

If your computer, phone, or wallet app may be compromised

A device problem is different from an exposed address. Malware, a malicious extension, or keylogging hardware or software could capture a password, private key, or recovery phrase as you enter it. Bitcoin.org cautions that wallet encryption cannot protect against keylogging hardware or software.

Contain the situation

  1. Stop opening the affected wallet and stop entering its secrets on the suspected device.
  2. From a separate, trusted device, use the wallet provider’s official security and recovery instructions. Reach the documentation by typing a known address or using a bookmark you created previously, not by following an unsolicited message.
  3. Change passwords that were entered on the device, beginning with the email account and any service that could reset wallet access. Do not reuse those passwords.
  4. Record public transaction IDs and timestamps for your own investigation, but never record or transmit the secret itself.
  5. If the wallet held significant funds, obtain qualified technical help through a verified channel; the appropriate malware-removal steps depend on the operating system and wallet.

No single forensic cleanup procedure is established for every device. A factory reset or antivirus scan may be part of a broader response, but neither should be presented as proof that a previously exposed key is safe.

How offline and hardware signing change the risk

The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes a signing-only pattern: a network-connected wallet prepares a transaction, while an offline or hardware wallet reviews and signs it. The signed transaction is then returned to a connected system for broadcast. This separates transaction preparation from the device that holds the signing secret.

Storage approach Where the key is held Transaction review Operational burden Backup consideration
Connected software wallet Network-connected general-purpose device Review occurs in the wallet application; no universal display or verification standard is established Lowest handling burden, but the device has a larger attack surface Use the wallet’s documented backup method; do not assume one format fits every wallet
Offline software signing Offline device or environment Transaction data must be transferred for review and signing More manual handling and more opportunities for transfer mistakes Keep the wallet’s complete backup offline and verify that restoration uses the same settings
Hardware signing wallet Dedicated signing device kept separate from the connected computer The device can be used to inspect output details before authorization Fewer manual transfer steps than a fully offline setup, but you must purchase, protect, and carry a physical device Follow that device’s documented seed and recovery process; a new device does not repair a leaked seed
Multisignature arrangement Spending authority is distributed across multiple keys Depends on the wallet’s implementation and signing devices More setup, coordination, and recovery planning Every required key and its backup must be recoverable; the cited material does not specify a universal configuration

Cold or hardware storage is most useful for funds you do not need to spend routinely. It is a security workflow, not an emergency cure: once a seed or private key has been disclosed, replacing the storage device while retaining that secret leaves the underlying problem unchanged.

How do I back up my wallet?

Back up according to the wallet’s own implementation. Bitcoin.org notes that backup requirements vary, while modern deterministic wallets may be able to restore addresses from a recovery phrase. That does not prove that every wallet uses the same derivation settings or that a phrase alone captures every account, label, or configuration.

  • Keep the backup offline and private.
  • Use durable physical media and keep copies in more than one physical place so one incident cannot destroy every copy.
  • Do not store a recovery phrase as a photograph or in cloud storage.
  • Confirm, using the wallet’s official instructions, what must be backed up: a phrase, an encrypted wallet file, additional passphrases, or other settings.
  • Test restoration with a small amount or a documented verification procedure before relying on the backup for substantial savings, without exposing the phrase to an online service.

A backup is another copy of the spending authority. Anyone who can read it may be able to restore the wallet, so label and store it in a way that reveals neither its contents nor which wallet it controls.

What if I send bitcoins to the wrong address?

Bitcoin.org’s answer is practical but unforgiving: there is no central authority that can reverse a confirmed transaction. A refund can occur only if the recipient voluntarily returns the bitcoin. A wallet provider or exchange may have an internal support process, but that process is not a promise of recovery.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Actions that are still worthwhile

  1. Verify the transaction ID and the destination address from your wallet’s transaction history.
  2. Save the amount, date, and any payment records that show how the address was supplied.
  3. If the destination belongs to an exchange or merchant, contact that organization through its established official support channel and provide the transaction details, never your recovery phrase.
  4. If the destination was controlled by someone you know, request a refund using a trusted channel.

Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery agent” who claims to reverse the transfer, and do not assume that a confirmed payment can be canceled because the receiving address was mistyped.

Protect future receipts and spending

After the immediate incident is contained, make the routine workflow harder to misuse:

  • Generate a fresh receiving address when available instead of reusing one indefinitely.
  • Keep wallet software updated through the wallet’s official distribution path.
  • Separate everyday spending from long-term savings so a routine device is not the only place holding all funds.
  • For savings, consider cold storage or a hardware signing wallet after you understand its backup and recovery process.
  • Before signing, check the destination and amount on the signing device when that device provides an independent review screen.
  • Practice restoring a wallet with a small test balance before depending on it for a larger amount.

Security improves only when the process is repeatable. A complicated offline procedure that you cannot perform correctly can introduce new errors, while a simpler setup used consistently may be safer for your circumstances.

Scam signals during a wallet incident

Urgency makes people vulnerable to a second theft. Treat these requests as warning signs:

  • A person asks for your recovery phrase or private key to verify ownership, synchronize a wallet, unlock a balance, or issue a refund.
  • A website asks you to paste a phrase before it will display a balance or recover a transaction.
  • A helper demands remote access to the computer where the wallet is used.
  • A service promises that a confirmed transaction can be reversed for an upfront fee.

Close the conversation and locate help through documentation or contact details you independently trust. Legitimate support does not need your recovery phrase.

A concise response checklist

  1. Identify whether the exposure was an address, public transaction information, a password, a device, a private key, or a recovery phrase.
  2. If it was only an address, generate a new receiving address for future payments and accept that the old public history remains visible.
  3. If a key or phrase was exposed, stop sharing it, assume compromise, and follow the wallet’s official replacement-wallet procedure from a clean route.
  4. If a device may be infected, stop entering secrets there and obtain wallet-specific remediation guidance.
  5. Secure new backups offline, on durable media, in more than one physical place, and never as a photo or cloud file.
  6. If a transaction is confirmed to the wrong address, preserve its details and contact the recipient or relevant service without expecting a guaranteed reversal.
