Treat a breach notice as a warning, not proof that money was stolen. Identify exactly what was exposed, contact your bank through a trusted channel, secure affected credentials and recovery methods, inspect transactions, and report any unauthorized transfer immediately. In the United States, add a credit freeze or fraud alert when new-account fraud is a concern, and use IdentityTheft.gov if the exposed information has already been misused.

First, determine what the breach exposed

Start with the organization’s breach notice, not with a link or phone number supplied by an unexpected caller. Confirm the organization involved, the date or period of the incident, the categories of information affected, and any official instructions or free services offered. A breach involving a name and account number requires a different response from one involving online-banking credentials, a debit-card number, a PIN, a Social Security number, or a recovery email address.

Exposure and fraud are different events. An exposed account number does not establish that someone entered the account or took funds. It does mean you should match your response to the information that may now be in someone else’s hands. The Federal Trade Commission’s breach guidance recommends using its data-breach response steps to make that assessment. The FTC’s consumer video puts the first move plainly: “First, take a deep breath. Then, visit identitytheft.gov/databreach.”

Make a quick exposure inventory

  • Deposit-account details: bank name, account number, routing number, or statements.
  • Card details: debit-card or credit-card number, expiration date, security code, PIN, or card-mailing address.
  • Access details: online-banking username, password, security questions, one-time codes, or device information.
  • Identity details: name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, tax information, or a copy of an identity document.
  • Recovery channels: the email address or phone number used to reset banking access.

Save the notice and record when you received it. Keep the organization’s official support page, incident reference number, and the dates of your calls. Those records make later disputes easier if you need to show when you notified the bank or the breached organization.

Contact your bank using a channel you verify yourself

Use the bank’s official mobile app or website, the telephone number printed on a recent statement, or the number on the back of your card. Ask for the fraud or security department and explain which information the notice says may have been exposed. The bank—not a generic checklist—must decide whether your situation calls for a replacement card, new online credentials, a different account number, additional transaction controls, or another measure. Federal consumer guidance supports contacting the institution, but there is no single procedure that every bank uses for every breach.

Do not trust an inbound “bank” contact

An unsolicited call, text, email, or pop-up claiming that your money is at risk may be a second scam built around the breach. A caller can know your name, the bank’s name, or partial account information and still be an impostor. The FTC advises independently verifying the story and keeping verification codes private in its guidance on unexpected calls about money at risk.

  • End the unexpected call or message.
  • Open the bank’s app yourself or type its known website address rather than following a message link.
  • Call the number on your card or statement.
  • Never read a one-time verification code to an unsolicited caller.
  • Do not move money to a “safe” account because someone tells you to; verify the request with the bank through an independent channel.

Secure passwords, PINs, cards, and recovery channels

If a password, PIN, online-banking username, debit-card detail, or authentication code may have been exposed, change it through the bank’s official app or website. Do not reuse the replacement password at email, shopping, cloud-storage, or other financial services. If the same password was used elsewhere, change those accounts too, beginning with the email account that can reset your bank login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the paths that can reset your account

Secure the email address and phone number associated with banking recovery. Use a unique, long password and the strongest multifactor option the bank supports. Review the bank profile for unfamiliar phone numbers, email addresses, trusted devices, payees, transfer destinations, and notification settings. Remove anything you do not recognize and ask the bank whether it can invalidate existing sessions or authentication devices.

Keep verification codes private. The FTC specifically warns consumers not to share account information or one-time codes with callers who claim that funds are in danger. A legitimate bank employee should not need you to disclose a code delivered to your phone or authenticator merely to “protect” the account.

Ask before making account changes

Do not automatically close an account, change its number, or freeze all activity solely because a notice says information was exposed. Those actions may be appropriate when the bank identifies a credible risk, but they can disrupt direct deposits, automatic payments, and billers. Ask the fraud team what it recommends for the particular data involved and what will happen to pending transactions if a change is made.

Review activity and report unauthorized transfers immediately

Check the account’s current activity and recent statements for withdrawals, debit-card purchases, electronic transfers, new payees, changed contact details, or other activity you did not authorize. Continue checking after the initial review: a criminal may test an account with a small transaction before attempting a larger one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when you find a transaction you did not make

  1. Contact the bank immediately through its official app, website, card number, or statement number.
  2. State clearly that the transfer or withdrawal is unauthorized and ask what claim or dispute process applies.
  3. Ask whether the bank can block further transfers, replace an access device, or secure the account.
  4. Write down the date, time, department, representative, claim number, and documents you supplied.
  5. Continue monitoring until the bank confirms that the issue is resolved.

The FTC lists withdrawals an account holder did not make as a possible sign of identity theft in its identity-theft guidance. Preserve statements, alerts, emails, and screenshots; do not delete evidence while a dispute is open.

Understand the U.S. Regulation E timing rule

For covered consumer electronic fund transfers, liability depends on facts such as the type of transfer, whether an access device was involved, and when you notify the institution. Under the current U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule, a consumer generally must report an unauthorized transfer shown on a periodic statement within 60 days after the institution transmits that statement to avoid liability for certain later transfers. See Regulation E §1005.6 for the rule’s wording.

The 60-day period is not a universal grace period and is not a reason to wait. Report a suspicious transfer as soon as you see it; the bank can explain which deadline and protections apply to your account and circumstances. The cited rule concerns U.S. consumer financial protections, so people outside the United States should follow their bank’s local law and complaint process.

Choose the right credit-file protection

A credit freeze or fraud alert addresses attempts to open new credit accounts. Neither one stops a thief from using an existing checking or savings account, so neither replaces transaction monitoring or a prompt call to the bank.

Protection What it does How to place it Duration and cost
Credit freeze Blocks potential creditors from accessing your credit report, making it harder to open new credit in your name. Place a freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus through their official channels. Free; remains until you lift it. You can temporarily lift it when applying for credit.
Initial fraud alert Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. Contact one of the three nationwide bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. Free; lasts one year.

The FTC explains these options in its credit-freeze guidance and its credit-freeze and fraud-alert comparison. Consider a freeze when identity details such as a Social Security number were exposed or when you do not expect to apply for credit soon. A fraud alert can be useful when you want an added verification signal without managing freezes at all three bureaus.

Report identity theft if the information was misused

If someone has opened an account, moved money, taken over a login, or otherwise used the exposed information fraudulently, file a report at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC’s service creates an identity-theft report and a recovery plan tailored to the situation. Give a copy to the affected bank or creditor when requested.

The CFPB’s guidance, “What do I do if I am a victim of identity theft?”, also advises contacting the financial institution and closing affected accounts when identity theft is occurring. Ask the bank how to preserve legitimate direct deposits and automatic payments while an affected account is closed or replaced.

Keep an evidence and contact log

  • Date and time of every call, chat, and report.
  • Names or identification numbers of representatives.
  • Dispute, police, or identity-theft report numbers.
  • Copies of statements showing unauthorized activity.
  • Letters, emails, and screenshots from the breached organization and financial institution.

Send documents only through the secure upload or mailing method the bank confirms. Redact unrelated account numbers when a full number is not required.

Evaluate breach-related monitoring offers carefully

An organization may offer free credit monitoring, identity monitoring, or identity-theft insurance after a breach. The FTC says to consider using services offered after an incident, but read the scope and duration before enrolling. Check whether monitoring covers only a credit file or also bank-account signals, how long coverage lasts, what recovery assistance is included, and what exclusions apply.

Monitoring is optional, not a prerequisite for the core response. The FTC’s identity-theft explanation notes that identity-theft insurance generally does not reimburse money stolen by scammers. It may pay certain recovery costs, depending on the policy, but it should not be treated as a refund for an unauthorized bank transfer. Do not delay contacting the bank while deciding whether to accept an offer.

A practical timeline for the next several weeks

Today

  • Save the breach notice and identify the exposed data categories.
  • Contact the bank through an independently verified official channel.
  • Change exposed passwords or PINs and secure the recovery email and phone.
  • Review current transactions and place a bank alert if available.
  • Ignore unsolicited requests for codes, transfers, or remote access.

Within the next few days

  • Review recent statements and recurring payments for unfamiliar activity.
  • Ask the bank whether a card, account number, or access credential should be replaced.
  • Place a credit freeze or initial fraud alert when the exposed identity data creates a new-account risk.
  • Enroll in a legitimate breach-related monitoring offer only after checking its duration, coverage, and exclusions.

Ongoing

  • Check account alerts and statements on the schedule the bank recommends.
  • Report every unauthorized transfer promptly and retain the claim record.
  • Watch email and phone accounts for password-reset attempts or changes you did not request.
  • Keep a written log until disputes and identity-theft reports are closed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming exposure proves theft: investigate and monitor without declaring fraud that has not occurred.
  • Calling a number in a surprise message: verify contact details through the bank’s app, website, statement, or card.
  • Sharing a verification code: unexpected callers can use it to defeat account security.
  • Relying only on a credit freeze: a freeze does not block withdrawals or transfers from an existing deposit account.
  • Waiting for a large loss: report even a small unrecognized transfer immediately.
  • Buying a product before taking core steps: a paid monitoring service does not replace bank notification, credential changes, or transaction review.
  • Changing every account without a plan: coordinate account-number or closure changes with the bank so legitimate payments are not accidentally rejected.

Can someone take money with your bank details?

Possession of bank details does not automatically give someone access to your account, and a breach notice does not prove that funds were taken. The risk depends on what was exposed and what additional controls an attacker can defeat. Login credentials, PINs, card data, recovery access, or convincing social-engineering messages can make unauthorized activity more likely than an isolated account number.

That uncertainty is why the safest response is ordered rather than panicked: verify the notice, ask the bank what the specific exposure requires, secure every access and recovery route, inspect transactions, and report anything unauthorized without delay. Use a freeze or fraud alert for new-credit risk, and use IdentityTheft.gov when misuse has actually occurred.
