Pop-ups, redirects, unfamiliar apps, or security warnings on a new Android phone are reasons to investigate—not proof that malware was preinstalled or deliberately included by the manufacturer. Start with Google Play Protect, install available updates, and review apps and account activity. If the problem returns after a reset or appears built into the system, contact the seller or manufacturer rather than trying an unofficial repair.
Can malware come preinstalled on an Android phone?
Malicious or unwanted software can be present on a device before its owner installs anything, but symptoms alone cannot establish when or how it arrived. Pop-ups that persist, unexpected redirects, unusual behavior, and security alerts can have other causes, including a problematic app. Google lists them as possible malware signs, not conclusive proof. Google’s Android malware guidance recommends checking the device and escalating if signs continue.
A harmful third-party app and compromised operating-system software are different problems. An app may be removable through Android settings; a system-image issue may survive an app removal or a reset of user data. A clean scan is useful, but it is not a forensic guarantee that the firmware is trustworthy.
What to do first
1. Run Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then select Play Protect.
- Check that app scanning is enabled and run a scan.
Google says Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and other sources, and may warn about, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful. Google’s Play Protect documentation explains its scanning and response. A scan that finds nothing does not verify that the phone’s system software has not been altered.

2. Install available updates
Check Settings for Android system updates, security updates, and Google Play system updates. The exact menu names and locations vary by device and Android version. Install updates offered for your phone, then check again for any remaining updates. Google includes update checks in its malware-removal steps.
3. Review apps and permissions
Look through installed apps for anything you do not recognize or trust. If Android allows it, uninstall suspicious apps and review permissions for apps you keep. Menu names differ across manufacturers, so use the phone’s Settings search if needed.

If the behavior seems tied to a downloaded app, safe mode can help narrow down whether a third-party app is involved. The method for entering safe mode varies by phone; consult the manufacturer’s instructions. Safe mode is a troubleshooting aid for apps, not a firmware scanner. Google’s safe-mode guidance describes how it can help identify app-related problems.

4. Check and secure your accounts
From a device you trust, run Google Account Security Checkup and review security alerts and account access. If you have reason to think a password or other credential was exposed, change it from that trusted device and review which devices and apps can access the account. Google’s malware instructions also recommend Security Checkup.

Should you factory-reset the phone?
Consider a factory reset if symptoms persist after checking apps and installing updates. A reset erases local data, so first preserve essential personal files and confirm you know the Google Account credentials needed to set the phone up again. Google’s reset guidance explains that a reset removes data and that account credentials are needed during setup.
- Back up only the files you need, such as photos and documents.
- Confirm you can sign in to the Google Account associated with the phone.
- Use the reset option in the phone’s Settings; its location varies by model.
- Set the phone up and install system updates before restoring apps.
- Reinstall apps selectively from sources you trust instead of restoring a full configuration backup that could bring back the suspicious app or setting.
A reset can help with software in user data, but it may not resolve software built into or altering the system image. If the same issue returns before you reinstall apps—or the phone otherwise appears modified—contact the seller or manufacturer.

When to contact the manufacturer or seller
Escalate if the suspected software appears built into Android, the issue returns after a reset, or the device’s certification or software state raises concerns. Google advises contacting the device maker when malware signs persist. Its guidance for restoring a device to factory state notes that restoring some devices may require the original manufacturer-signed Android build and recommends consulting the maker’s support site.

Keep the box and packaging, order records, and screenshots of warnings or suspicious behavior. These can help explain the issue to the seller or manufacturer. Ask whether the maker offers a device-specific fix or signed restore, and whether the model still receives Android and security updates. If the issue cannot be resolved, check the actual seller’s return or exchange terms; those depend on the seller, purchase, and jurisdiction.

Google Play Protect certification and Play Protect app scanning are not the same thing. Certification concerns whether a device meets Google’s compatibility requirements; the Play Protect app is a scanning feature. An uncertified device may not receive Android or app updates and may be less secure, but uncertified status by itself does not prove malware. See Google’s certification guidance.
Do not unlock the bootloader, root the phone, install a random cleaner, or flash an image from an unofficial site as a first response. If a system restore is needed, Google’s guidance points to the original manufacturer-signed build and the device maker’s support instructions.
