Put safety before troubleshooting. If someone who may be monitoring your phone could see your searches, messages, or calls, use a different device they have not accessed—a trusted person’s phone or a public computer—to contact a domestic-violence advocate, technology-safety specialist, or other trusted support service. If you face an immediate threat, seek local emergency help through a safe method.
Do not assume that a battery drain or one unfamiliar app proves surveillance. Monitoring can involve stalkerware, linked devices, cloud or carrier accounts, location-sharing settings, or information passed on by another person. Avoid uninstalling apps, resetting the phone, or changing every password until you have considered safety, evidence, and how the change might be noticed.
1. Make a safe first move
A phone that may expose help-seeking can make an ordinary investigation risky. The person monitoring it might see browser history, messages, call records, location, or account alerts. The Coalition Against Stalkerware and NNEDV’s Safety Net Project both advise using a safer device that the suspected monitor has not had physical access to.

- Borrow a trusted person’s phone, use a public computer, or contact a qualified advocate from another device.
- Do not save a hotline number, search history, or appointment details on the possibly monitored phone unless an advocate says that is safe.
- Ask the support organization how it handles call logs, voicemail, text messages, and mandatory reporting in your location. Rules differ by jurisdiction, especially when children may be involved.
Get a personalized safety plan
A survivor-assistance organization or technology-safety advocate can help decide whether to document, preserve, remove, reset, or replace the phone. There is no universally safe instruction to confront the suspected monitor, turn the phone off immediately, or change every account password. The right sequence depends on who may be monitoring, whether you share a home or finances, and whether changing settings could trigger retaliation.

2. Interpret warning signs cautiously
Stalkerware can be invisible, and ordinary phone problems can look suspicious. Treat symptoms as prompts to seek advice, not as a diagnosis.
Possible clues
- A battery that drains much faster than it used to.
- Unexpected increases in mobile-data use.
- Unexplained changes in Screen Time or other usage reports.
- Notifications, settings, or permission requests you do not recognize.
- Another person knowing unusually specific details about your calls, messages, movements, or phone activity without an obvious explanation.
The Coalition Against Stalkerware notes that these signs may have many causes and that some stalkerware produces no visible side effects. A software scan that finds nothing therefore cannot prove that the phone is safe.
Keep a private incident log
Record dates, what the person appeared to know, unusual notifications, and any changes you observed. Store the log somewhere the suspected monitor cannot access, such as a trusted person’s account or a paper record kept outside the shared home, if doing so is safe. Do not send the log through an account that may be compromised.

Knowing what kind of information was revealed can help an advocate narrow the possibilities, but it is not a do-it-yourself diagnostic test.
Call activity
If someone knows that a call occurred but not what was said, they may have seen call history, carrier billing records, or an account dashboard. The other participant may also have shared the information.

Message content
Message text can become visible through a linked tablet or computer, access to a cloud account, phone-monitoring software, forwarding, screenshots, or another participant. A carrier account generally does not provide the contents of encrypted messages, but account access can still reveal records and settings.
Conversations and surroundings
Stalkerware is one possibility when someone repeats private conversations, but an overheard discussion, a smart speaker, a nearby recording device, or information supplied by a participant can produce the same result.

Location and account access
A person with carrier-account access may view call records or enable location-related services. A compromised Google or Apple account can expose synchronized information. Built-in location sharing, family features, and individual apps may also share whereabouts. A replacement phone will not close those routes by itself.
4. Do not rush to delete, reset, or change accounts
Removing suspected stalkerware can alert the person who installed it, escalate harassment, or erase evidence needed by an advocate or investigator. The Coalition states: “Only attempt to remove stalkerware if you believe it is safe to do so.” The Federal Trade Commission similarly recommends discussing evidence preservation with a domestic-violence advocate before changing the phone.
Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide gives the same principle in different words: “IMPORTANT: Before making changes or deleting information, consider potential impacts to your safety.” A password reset can be sensible, but an unexpected security alert, forced logout, or changed recovery address may be visible to someone who still has access.

5. Compare response options with a safety plan
Use these options as planning choices, not a checklist to follow automatically. An advocate can help weigh immediate safety, evidence, coverage, reinstallation risk, cost, and your phone’s platform.
| Option | Immediate-safety question | Evidence impact | What it covers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the phone unchanged temporarily | Will waiting reduce the chance of detection or retaliation? | Preserves current information | Allows broader assessment of apps, accounts, and sharing | Monitoring may continue |
| Remove a suspected app | Could the monitor receive an alert or notice missing data? | May delete evidence | Only the installed software you remove | Does not close cloud, carrier, linked-device, or location access; software may be reinstalled |
| Factory-reset the phone | Can you safely lose access temporarily and set it up privately? | Usually removes local data and may destroy evidence | Often removes stalkerware from the device | Restoring an old backup can reinstall the problem; account access remains separate |
| Use a new phone | Can you obtain and activate it without the monitor noticing? | Leaves the old phone available for preservation if stored safely | Provides a clean physical device when configured correctly | Shared cloud, carrier, number, and location settings can still expose information |
| Secure accounts and sharing | Will sign-in alerts or changed recovery details be visible? | May preserve server-side records, but can alter access logs | Cloud accounts, carrier access, linked devices, location sharing, and app permissions | Exact controls differ by provider and may require the old phone or recovery method |
6. If a reset or replacement is chosen
Factory reset
The Coalition Against Stalkerware describes a factory reset as almost as effective as obtaining a new phone. Before using it, ask an advocate about preserving photographs, messages, call records, and other evidence. Afterward, reinstall only the applications you actually need. The FTC advises reinstalling the manufacturer’s operating system and not restoring programs or content from the old phone or cloud, because a backup can bring spyware back.
Before signing in, update the operating system, set a new device passcode, and confirm that recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and two-factor-authentication methods belong only to you. If another person controls the family plan or the email account used for recovery, the reset does not solve that access.
Replacement phone
A new smartphone may be safer when it can be obtained and configured privately. Use an account the suspected abuser cannot access, and consider whether a new number, carrier, or carrier-account password is needed. Keep the old device powered or stored only as an advocate recommends; it may contain evidence, but it may also reveal your new location or plans.
Do not restore a complete old backup automatically. Select contacts, photos, or documents individually after checking them, and reinstall applications from official stores. Review every app’s permissions rather than granting the same permissions as before.

Security software
The Coalition and NNEDV identify reputable mobile-security software as a possible detection or removal aid. A scan is not proof that a phone is clean, and installing or running security software may be visible. Research the tool from a safer device and ask an advocate whether using it now is appropriate.
7. Close account and sharing routes
When it is safe, review access separately from the physical phone. Use a strong, unique password for each important account and enable two-factor authentication where available. Make changes from a device the suspected monitor cannot access.
- Review signed-in sessions and connected devices for cloud accounts, email, messaging, and social services.
- Check carrier-account users, account-recovery methods, call forwarding, and any location-related services.
- Review location sharing in the operating system and in individual apps, including family or household groups.
- Examine app permissions for location, microphone, camera, contacts, accessibility, and notification access.
- Set a strong device passcode and a short automatic-lock interval; avoid sharing an unlocked phone.
- Install operating-system and security updates from the manufacturer.
Do not remove an unfamiliar app solely because it looks suspicious. Capture its name and details only if doing so will not expose your investigation, then ask a qualified helper how to proceed.

Safety Check
On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide identifies Safety Check under Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. It can help you review sharing and access. Menus change, and older iOS versions and other Apple devices use different controls, so verify the current instructions in Apple’s official guide before making changes. Consider safety first, especially if another person may notice that sharing has stopped.

Mercenary-spyware notifications
Apple distinguishes individually targeted mercenary spyware from ordinary security concerns. Apple says the vast majority of users will never be targeted. If Apple displays a threat notification, take it seriously and seek expert help, such as Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline. Apple says its threat notifications do not ask you by email or phone to click a link, install an app or configuration profile, or disclose a password or verification code. Its support page, published August 13, 2026, reports that Apple had notified users in more than 150 countries since 2021. That figure describes Apple’s high-confidence notifications, not the prevalence of stalkerware or ordinary phone monitoring. Apple’s wording is explicit: “Apple threat notifications are high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack, and should be taken very seriously.”
9. Get help and document safely
A domestic-violence advocate, survivor-support organization, or technology-safety professional can help coordinate evidence, account recovery, housing, legal, and communication decisions. Tell the helper what the suspected monitor may be able to see and whether you share devices, accounts, finances, or a home. Ask how to communicate safely and where records should be stored.
Emergency numbers, hotline availability, reporting duties, and legal remedies vary by location. Check local resources from a safer device. If you are in immediate danger, prioritize emergency assistance and physical safety over diagnosing the phone.
Bottom line
Suspicion deserves a careful response, not a panic reset. Use a safer device to get advice, treat symptoms as clues, consider account and human routes as well as stalkerware, preserve evidence when safe, and choose removal, reset, replacement, or account changes only as part of a plan. A clean phone helps only when the accounts, carrier access, linked devices, and location sharing around it are secured too.
