Contact your bank promptly through a telephone number, app or website you have independently verified. Explain the transactions, messages and people involved, and ask what protective action it recommends. Then report suspected fraud or crime through the appropriate UK route and consider filing an individual Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with the National Crime Agency (NCA). These are separate actions: a SAR does not replace a police or fraud report.
Do not move, forward, conceal or spend money you suspect is connected to crime, and do not assume that receiving or transferring it makes you a deliberate participant. UK guidance recognises that people can be coerced or exploited. The steps below are written for England and Wales; procedures elsewhere in the UK can differ.
Act first: protect the account and your safety
Stop responding to instructions about the suspicious money
Do not send the funds to another account, withdraw cash for someone else, “return” a payment to new details, or use cryptocurrency or gift cards to move it. Do not delete messages or reset records that could show what happened. Continuing to move funds can make the situation harder to explain and may put you at further risk.
If another person is pressuring you, threatening you, or has access to your banking credentials, stop communicating through the channel they control. Do not confront a suspected criminal in person. If you are in immediate danger, call 999.

Use a channel you can verify
Find your bank’s number on the back of your card, an official statement, or the bank’s app or website that you already trust. Do not rely on a number sent in a text message, email or social-media message. Tell the bank that you suspect the account has been used to receive, hold or transfer criminal funds and ask for its immediate account-security procedure.
Which organisation should you contact?
You may need more than one report. Each route has a different purpose, and none is a substitute for the others.

Contact details and reporting names can change. Check the current official instructions when you report. Home Office guidance lists 0300 123 2040 for Action Fraud, while NCA guidance refers to Report Fraud; use the current route shown by the relevant official service rather than relying on an old number.
Tell your bank exactly what you know
Prepare a clear account before you call
Make a short timeline with dates, times, amounts and account references. Include the first payment or message that seemed unusual, what you were told to do, and whether you completed any instruction. Say if you gave anyone your password, one-time code, card details or access to your device. If you do not know how a payment happened, say that plainly rather than guessing.

Ask the bank to record that you are reporting suspected criminal use of the account. Request advice on changing credentials, stopping further payments, securing mobile or online banking, and dealing with any payment that is still pending. Follow the bank’s instructions, but do not agree to transfer funds to a “safe account” based solely on an unsolicited caller’s directions; verify any request through the bank’s trusted channel.
Expect restrictions without assuming fault
A bank may restrict or freeze an account when it identifies a money-laundering concern. That can affect a person who was exploited as well as someone who deliberately participated. A restriction can prevent payments, cash withdrawals or online access while checks take place, and the bank may not be able to explain every investigative detail.
Official guidance does not establish a standard timetable for restoring access. Do not promise yourself or anyone else that the account will be reopened by a particular date. Ask the bank how to submit evidence, how it will communicate with you, and what procedure applies if you need access to essential living costs.
Report suspected fraud or another crime separately
Fraud and unauthorised activity
Use the current Report Fraud service for suspected fraud, deception or unauthorised transactions. Give it the bank’s case reference if one is available, but still make the report even if the bank has not finished its review. The Home Office guidance identifies 0300 123 2040 for Action Fraud; verify the current number and service name before calling because reporting arrangements can change.

Non-emergency and emergency police contact
Call 101 for a non-emergency crime that does not fit the fraud-reporting route or when police advice is needed. Call 999 if there is an immediate threat to your safety, someone is being coerced right now, or urgent police intervention is required. If the concern involves a child or an adult at risk, tell the police and the relevant local safeguarding service what is happening.
Consider an individual Suspicious Activity Report
An individual who knows or suspects money laundering or terrorist financing can submit a SAR through the NCA’s SAR Portal. The portal is available 24 hours a day. After submission, it provides an acknowledgement and reference number; keep both with your records.
A SAR is an intelligence report, not a complaint about customer service and not a substitute for reporting a crime. The NCA states: “SARs are not crime reports, and submitting a SAR does not replace the need to make a crime report to the police or report the matter to another relevant government department or organisation.” Therefore, contact the bank and the appropriate fraud or police service as well as considering the SAR.

Describe facts rather than conclusions: identify the accounts, dates, amounts, messages, names or aliases, and why the activity appears suspicious. Explain your own connection to the account and whether you may have been deceived or pressured. Submit only information you genuinely know or suspect. The NCA says SAR reporters are not routinely updated about operational activity, so an acknowledgement does not mean you will receive progress reports.

Preserve evidence without altering it
Save financial records
- Download or print bank statements showing the relevant transactions.
- Record transaction references, dates, amounts, payee details and any payment status.
- Keep the bank’s case number, the date you reported the issue and the name or identifier of the staff member who helped.
Save communications and make a dated log
- Keep text messages, emails, chat messages, call records, letters and screenshots that show instructions or pressure.
- Write a chronological account of what happened while your memory is fresh, including who contacted you and what you replied.
- Store copies in a secure location that the person who may have accessed your account cannot change.
Do not edit screenshots, crop away useful context, or destroy original files. If a message disappears from an app, note that fact in your log and preserve any notification or backup that remains.

Coercion, exploitation or vulnerability
Money-laundering activity can be connected to financial exploitation. If someone recruited you, controlled your phone, threatened you, or promised payment for using your account, explain those circumstances to the bank and to the reporting service. Being named in a transaction does not by itself establish deliberate involvement.
For a child or an adult at risk, contact the local safeguarding arrangement as well as the police when appropriate. The Home Office safeguarding guidance is aimed at England and Wales; local arrangements in Scotland and Northern Ireland differ. A professional supporting someone at risk should follow the relevant local safeguarding procedure.

When independent legal advice is sensible
Seek prompt advice from an independent solicitor if you are worried that your own actions could have criminal or regulatory consequences, if you knowingly handled funds, or if investigators contact you for an interview. The NCA notes that legal advice may be appropriate when someone is unsure how the SAR regime applies. A solicitor can advise on your position without asking you to hide or alter evidence.

Plan for restricted access while checks continue
If the bank limits the account, list essential payments that may be affected: rent or mortgage, utilities, food, medication and wages. Tell the bank which payments are urgent and ask what evidence or alternative process it accepts. Keep written confirmation of every request and response.
Do not open or use another person’s account to bypass a restriction, and do not ask friends to receive or forward the suspicious funds. Those workarounds can create additional unexplained transactions. If you need help with immediate living costs, contact an appropriate local advice or safeguarding service and explain that access to your own funds is restricted.
Secure your other accounts
If the incident involved a stolen password, one-time code, card, phone or email account, tell the bank and change the affected credentials using a device you trust. Sign out unknown sessions, replace compromised cards when instructed, and check whether new payees or payment methods were added. Do not share a new password or verification code with anyone claiming to be helping unless you initiated the call through a verified bank channel.
Review your statements for related transactions, but do not delay the initial bank report while conducting a complete audit. Give the bank any additional references as you find them and keep your timeline updated.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for certainty: report a reasonable suspicion; you do not need to prove the entire scheme before alerting the bank.
- Assuming a bank report covers everything: bank security work, a fraud report, a police report and an NCA SAR have different purposes.
- Moving the money “back” yourself: use the bank’s documented process for disputed or mistaken payments.
- Confronting the person involved: preserve communications and let the bank or police handle contact where possible.
- Deleting embarrassing messages: records can help show coercion, deception or the point at which you became concerned.
- Expecting a guaranteed SAR update: the NCA provides an acknowledgement and reference but does not routinely report operational activity to SAR reporters.
What happens after you report?
The bank may ask for identity checks, transaction details, copies of messages or an explanation of how another person obtained access. Answer accurately and keep copies of what you submit. It may continue restrictions while it assesses the activity, and neither the bank nor the NCA may be able to disclose whether a SAR was filed or what investigative steps are underway.
Keep your phone number, email address and postal address current with the bank so it can reach you. If circumstances change—new threats, further payments, loss of a device or immediate danger—report the change through the appropriate urgent route rather than waiting for a routine update.
The safest approach is factual and prompt: secure the account, preserve the record, report suspected crime through the relevant channel, and use the NCA SAR Portal as an additional intelligence route when you suspect money laundering or terrorist financing.
