A negative COVID-19 test does not rule out infection. If you have symptoms and used an at-home antigen test, take another test 48 hours after the first negative result, following the test’s instructions. If you remain ill or worried, or you may be at higher risk for severe illness, contact a healthcare provider. Another respiratory illness, such as flu or RSV, could be causing your symptoms. Seek emergency medical care immediately for an emergency warning sign.
What a negative result does—and does not—tell you
A negative test means that the test did not detect the virus in the sample. It is not proof that you do not have COVID-19. The amount of virus present may be too low for a test to detect, especially early in an infection, and the result also depends on using the test as directed and collecting the sample correctly. The CDC explains that a negative result does not rule out infection.
That distinction matters most when you have symptoms. Treat a single negative at-home antigen result as one piece of information, not as a diagnosis or an all-clear. It cannot by itself establish what is making you sick, and it should not be used to decide that you no longer need medical advice. A negative result also does not determine whether you are contagious.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTiming is one reason a negative test can be misleading: a test only reports what it detected in the sample at the time you took it. A negative result today does not guarantee that a later test will also be negative, or settle what is causing symptoms that continue. Follow the recommended repeat schedule for an antigen test, and pay attention to how you feel in addition to the result.

First, identify which kind of test you took
Check the test packaging or instructions to see whether it is an antigen test or a molecular test, such as a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), which includes PCR tests. The type affects how to interpret a negative result and what to do next.
| Test type | What a negative result means in this situation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| At-home antigen | It did not detect enough viral material in the sample to produce a positive result. Antigen tests are less likely than molecular tests to detect infection, particularly early in illness. | If you have symptoms, repeat the test 48 hours after the first negative result, for at least two tests total. Follow the specific test’s instructions. |
| Molecular test, such as NAAT or PCR | Molecular tests are generally more sensitive than antigen tests, but a negative result still needs to be considered alongside symptoms and clinical circumstances. | If you remain concerned or feel ill, contact a healthcare provider to discuss whether further evaluation or testing is appropriate. |
Antigen tests offer a rapid result, but they are less likely than molecular tests to detect infection, particularly early in illness. Molecular testing is an alternative a healthcare provider may consider when a symptomatic person has a negative antigen result. A clinician can help decide which option fits the situation; the greater sensitivity of molecular tests does not make a negative result a diagnosis of the cause of every symptom.
These tests answer whether they detected SARS-CoV-2 in the sample. Unless a test is specifically authorized for another purpose, a COVID-19 test does not diagnose flu, RSV, or another illness. Do not use a negative COVID-19 test as evidence that another infection is absent, or as a substitute for an evaluation when one is needed.

How to repeat a negative at-home antigen test
- Check the test instructions. Use the instructions for the particular test you have, including its sample-collection method, timing, and result-reading directions. Do not substitute directions from a different test. The way you collect the sample and the time you wait to read the result can affect whether you use it correctly.
- Set the repeat interval. FDA recommends that people with COVID-19 symptoms repeat an initial negative antigen test 48 hours later, for at least two tests total. This is a testing interval, not a guarantee that the second result will rule out infection.
- Use a valid test and collect the sample as directed. Improper use can make a result less reliable. Check the test’s current authorization and expiration information, and follow any storage and handling instructions on its labeling. If you need to obtain another test, choose an at-home COVID-19 antigen test and follow its own labeling rather than relying on directions for a different product.
- Read the result only at the time and in the way the instructions specify. If a test is invalid or the result is unclear, follow its directions for an invalid result rather than treating it as negative.
- Decide what to do based on how you feel, not just the result. If symptoms persist, worsen, or concern you, contact a healthcare provider even if repeat antigen tests are negative.
FDA’s guidance is: “If you have COVID-19 symptoms, test again 48 hours after the first negative test, for a total of at least two tests.” FDA also says: “Always do a repeat test 48 hours after a negative result on an antigen test.” These directions apply to symptomatic people using an antigen test; follow the labeling for the specific test you have.

The 48-hour interval and minimum of two tests are instructions for repeat testing, not estimates of your personal risk and not a promise that two negative results rule out COVID-19. If you remain concerned after testing, the FDA advises talking with a healthcare provider. A molecular test may be another option; a healthcare provider can advise whether it is appropriate in your circumstances.
When a molecular test or clinician’s advice may help
Because molecular tests are generally more sensitive than antigen tests, a healthcare provider may consider a NAAT to clarify a negative antigen result. CDC guidance says that a symptomatic person with a negative antigen test can repeat testing according to FDA guidance or have the result confirmed with NAAT. Which option makes sense depends on your symptoms and situation; the test result alone does not determine the next step.
Contact a healthcare provider if you still feel sick, your symptoms worsen, or you remain concerned about COVID-19 after testing. Describe when symptoms began, what kind of test you took, when you took it, and whether you repeated it. That information can help the provider decide whether you need a different COVID-19 test or an evaluation for another cause. You can also ask directly whether molecular testing or testing for flu, RSV, or another illness is appropriate.

Consider flu, RSV, and other causes of respiratory symptoms
COVID-19 is not the only illness that can cause respiratory symptoms. Flu, RSV, and other illnesses can produce overlapping symptoms, so a negative COVID-19 result does not identify the cause. CDC advises considering illnesses with similar symptoms, particularly when early diagnosis and treatment could matter.
When you speak with a healthcare provider, ask whether evaluation or testing for flu, RSV, or another illness is appropriate. The right choice depends on your symptoms and circumstances. A negative COVID-19 test cannot answer those questions, and a COVID-19 antigen test should not be treated as a test for other viruses unless it is specifically authorized for that purpose.
There is no need to assume that every negative COVID-19 result points to flu or RSV; they are possibilities, not conclusions. Testing and evaluation depend on the circumstances. A healthcare provider can help determine whether checking for another respiratory illness is useful, especially if early diagnosis and treatment may matter for you.
Get prompt advice if you may be at higher risk
If you feel sick and have risk factors for severe respiratory illness, seek healthcare promptly for advice about testing and/or treatment. Do not assume that a negative home test means you can safely put off that conversation. Timely testing and treatment may reduce the severity of illness or complications for people at higher risk.

The CDC’s guidance is: “Seek healthcare right away for testing and/or treatment if you feel sick or tested positive for a respiratory virus and have risk factors for severe illness.” If you are unsure whether a risk factor applies to you, contact a healthcare provider rather than trying to resolve the question from a home-test result. The point is to seek advice promptly when you are sick and may be at higher risk, not to wait for a positive home test before asking about care.
Know when to seek emergency care
Emergency warning signs require emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait 48 hours for another test or wait for a routine appointment when you believe you may be experiencing an emergency. The CDC’s respiratory illness guidance, updated September 10, 2026, advises seeking emergency medical care for emergency warning signs. If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, seek urgent professional guidance.
A home test is not a triage tool: its result should not delay emergency care. For current emergency warning signs, consult the CDC’s About Respiratory Illnesses guidance rather than relying on an incomplete list here.
A practical decision path
- Symptoms and one negative home antigen test: Treat the result as preliminary. Follow that test’s instructions and repeat it 48 hours after the first negative.
- Negative antigen tests but ongoing illness or concern: Contact a healthcare provider. Ask whether a molecular COVID-19 test or evaluation for flu, RSV, or another illness is appropriate.
- Feeling sick and at higher risk for severe illness: Seek healthcare promptly for advice about testing and/or treatment rather than relying on a negative home test.
- An emergency warning sign: Seek emergency medical care immediately.
CDC and FDA recommendations cited here are U.S. guidance. Follow the labeling for your specific test and seek individualized medical advice when needed. CDC’s Testing and Respiratory Viruses and Treatment of Respiratory Viruses pages were updated August 18, 2025; the CDC’s About Respiratory Illnesses page was updated September 10, 2026. FDA’s at-home test guidance covers repeat testing and the limits of antigen results.

Frequently Asked Questions
I tested negative for COVID but still have symptoms. What should I do?
If you used an at-home antigen test, follow its instructions and repeat it 48 hours after the first negative, for at least two tests total. If you still feel sick, symptoms worsen, or you remain concerned, contact a healthcare provider. A negative test does not rule out COVID-19 or identify another cause.
How soon should I repeat a negative at-home COVID antigen test?
FDA recommends that people with symptoms repeat an initial negative antigen test 48 hours later. The recommendation is for at least two tests total. Use the directions for your specific test.
Should I get a PCR or other molecular test after a negative antigen test?
Molecular tests such as NAAT or PCR are generally more sensitive than antigen tests. CDC says a symptomatic person with a negative antigen result can repeat testing according to FDA guidance or have the result confirmed with NAAT. Ask a healthcare provider which option is appropriate for your circumstances.
Could flu or RSV be causing my symptoms instead?
Yes. Flu, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses can cause symptoms that overlap with COVID-19. A COVID-19 test does not diagnose those illnesses. Ask a healthcare provider whether evaluation or testing for another cause is appropriate.
When should I contact a healthcare provider if my test is negative?
Contact a provider if symptoms persist or worsen, you remain concerned, or you need advice about testing or another possible cause. If you feel sick and may have risk factors for severe respiratory illness, seek healthcare promptly rather than relying on a negative home test.
When should I seek emergency care?
Seek emergency medical care immediately for an emergency warning sign. Do not wait for a repeat test or a routine appointment. Consult current CDC respiratory illness guidance for emergency warning signs.
The Bottom Line
A negative COVID-19 test is not an all-clear when you still feel sick. If you have symptoms and took an at-home antigen test, repeat it 48 hours later according to its instructions. If illness continues, concern remains, or you may be at higher risk, contact a healthcare provider; seek emergency medical care immediately for an emergency warning sign.
