Get out of the water promptly, warn the lifeguard, and follow the beach authority’s instructions. Do not swim back to shore to investigate, take a closer photograph, or wait to see whether the shark leaves. A lifeguard or beach official will assess the sighting and tell everyone whether the water is closed and when it is safe to return.
If nobody is on duty, use the beach’s posted reporting method. Call 911 when there is an immediate emergency, such as an injured swimmer or a shark that is actively threatening people. Routine reporting contacts vary by beach and should not be guessed.
What to do immediately after seeing a shark
- Leave the water in a controlled way. Move toward shore without deliberately splashing, chasing the animal, or stopping to film it. Keep nearby swimmers moving toward the beach as well, but do not delay your own exit to organize a crowd.
- Tell the lifeguard at once. Give the approximate location, direction of travel, size, number of sharks, and whether anyone was bitten or is missing. A clear description helps the lifeguard decide how broad a warning or closure should be.
- Stay on shore and obey signs, flags, whistles, and announcements. Do not re-enter because the shark is no longer visible. Officials may need time to assess conditions and coordinate a search.
- Report an emergency through emergency services. Call 911 for a bite, serious injury, a person in distress, or any immediate threat when a lifeguard cannot be reached. For non-emergency sightings, use the contact posted by that beach authority.
Do not assume that a shark sighting automatically means the same response everywhere. Cape Cod National Seashore tells visitors to notify a lifeguard; the water is temporarily closed and beachgoers are told when they may return. At Gateway National Recreation Area, lifeguards assess the shark’s size and behavior and decide whether a closure is necessary. These are local operating policies, not a universal rule for every beach.
Why leaving the water is the right first move
A sighting gives officials information they did not have moments earlier: an animal has been close enough to be observed, and its direction and behavior may be uncertain. Remaining in the water increases exposure while a lifeguard is still evaluating the report. Exiting also gives other swimmers and responders a clear area in which to work.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) describes the relative risk of a shark attack as very small, while recommending that people minimize the risk whenever possible. “Rare” does not mean impossible, and it does not justify ignoring a local warning. There is no individual-beach probability in the official material used here, so a precise percentage would be misleading.
Who to tell when there is no lifeguard
Immediate danger or injury
Call 911 if someone has been bitten, is bleeding heavily, is missing, is drowning, or faces an ongoing threat. Tell the dispatcher the beach name, access point or landmark, your position on the beach, and what you observed. Send someone to meet responders if the beach layout makes the location difficult to find.
Non-emergency sighting
Use the beach’s posted phone number, ranger-station contact, emergency call box, or official reporting application. Cape Cod National Seashore provides local ranger-station contacts and an app option, but those details apply to Cape Cod; another beach may use a different channel. Check entrance signs, lifeguard stands, park notices, or the managing agency’s current website rather than relying on an old number.

What information to provide
- Exact beach, access point, and approximate time.
- Where the shark was relative to shore, swimmers, surfers, or a marked swimming zone.
- Estimated size and appearance only if you observed it safely; do not approach for a better view.
- Direction of travel and behavior, such as cruising, circling, feeding, or making repeated passes.
- Whether anyone is injured, missing, or still in the water.
How closures and reopening decisions work
There is no single nationwide closure duration. The beach authority may consider the shark’s size, behavior, visibility, water conditions, recent sightings, and whether swimmers can be accounted for. Follow the local all-clear, not an unofficial estimate from another beach or a social-media post.
| Location | Response described by the official guidance | What a swimmer should do |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Cod National Seashore | Visitors notify a lifeguard. The water is temporarily closed, and beachgoers are told when they may re-enter. | Remain out of the water until officials announce reopening. |
| Gateway National Recreation Area | Lifeguards assess size and behavior and decide whether a closure is necessary. If a closure is initiated, the page specifies a one-hour post-sighting period. | Follow the lifeguard’s closure and reopening instructions for that beach. |
The Gateway one-hour period is a local example, not a general waiting time. Cape Cod’s guidance does not promise a fixed number of minutes. If conditions change or another sighting occurs, officials can extend a closure.
What not to do after a sighting
- Do not return for a closer look. A shark that was visible near one swimmer may move beyond the original observation point.
- Do not rely on a phone alert alone. The absence of a message does not mean a closure has ended; use the beach authority’s explicit all-clear.
- Do not crowd the shoreline or launch a private search. Keep access clear for lifeguards, police, park staff, and medical responders.
- Do not assume equipment makes staying in the water safe. The official response guidance does not establish that deterrents, protective clothing, or another product can prevent an encounter.
- Do not spread an unverified species or size claim. Pass on what you actually saw and let trained personnel identify the animal.
How to reduce encounter risk before entering the water
Risk reduction begins before a sighting. The National Park Service and NOAA recommend practical habits that lower exposure without suggesting that any beach can be made risk-free.

Choose the safest conditions available
- Swim near shore and in a designated area watched by lifeguards.
- Use the buddy system rather than swimming alone, so someone can summon help quickly.
- Avoid low-visibility water, including conditions made murky by runoff, heavy surf, or poor light.
- Stay away from areas where seals, schools of fish, or active feeding are visible.
- Observe posted signs, warning flags, temporary closures, and lifeguard directions before entering.
Limit signals that can attract attention
- Avoid unnecessary splashing and erratic activity.
- Do not enter the water with an open bleeding wound.
- Be especially cautious at times and places identified by local officials as having increased wildlife activity; do not substitute a generic timetable for local advice.
These measures reduce opportunities for an encounter; they do not guarantee that a shark will not be present. The safest choice is always to comply with the beach authority’s current warning.
If someone is bitten
Treat a bite as a medical emergency. Get the person out of the water, call 911, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Keep bystanders back and guide responders to the victim.
The state-agency guidance available for this topic supports one limited first-aid point: a person with first-aid training should try to stop bleeding until help arrives. Apply only care you are trained to provide, and do not delay the emergency call while attempting an unfamiliar procedure. The cited guidance does not establish a complete bite-treatment protocol, so medical dispatchers and responding clinicians should direct the next steps.

How to decide whether to swim later that day
- Check the official status. Look for the lifeguard’s verbal all-clear, an official announcement, or the beach authority’s posted update.
- Confirm that the notice applies to your exact area. A closure at one access point may not describe conditions at another, and an open beach elsewhere is not evidence that your beach has reopened.
- Reassess conditions. If visibility is poor, wildlife is feeding nearby, or lifeguards advise against entering, choose another activity even if the formal closure has ended.
- Leave immediately if another warning occurs. A new sighting resets the need to follow the current local response.
When no official all-clear is available, remain out of the water. Guessing at a waiting period is less reliable than waiting for the authority responsible for that beach.

You see a fin while swimming
Do not approach to identify it. Move calmly toward shore, alert nearby swimmers without creating a panic, and report the sighting to the lifeguard. If the object disappears, continue exiting and let officials investigate.

You see a shark from the sand
Tell the lifeguard or beach authority, identify the area where you saw it, and keep people away from the water until officials assess the report. A shore-based observation can still be useful, but do not enter the water to verify it.
A beach is crowded and nobody knows whether it is closed
Ask the lifeguard or official at the nearest stand. Follow the most recent official instruction and avoid repeating rumors. If an emergency is unfolding and no official is reachable, call 911.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Exit promptly, notify the lifeguard, and follow local instructions.
- Stay out during a closure and wait for the beach authority’s all-clear; reopening times differ by location.
- Call 911 for an injury or immediate danger; use local non-emergency reporting channels for routine sightings.
- Reduce exposure by swimming near shore, staying with others, avoiding poor visibility and feeding wildlife, limiting splashing, and watching signs and flags.
- Shark attacks are rare and the relative risk is very small, but minimizing avoidable exposure is still sensible.
