Stay safe, record what you actually saw, and test ordinary explanations before calling a light unidentified. Note the exact time and location, the light’s direction, apparent movement, duration and brightness, and preserve any original photo or video. If the activity may endanger people or property, contact local emergency services; in the United States, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance directs the public to local law enforcement for immediate danger and to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) for general unexplained-phenomena reports.

An observation that remains unidentified describes the limits of the available evidence. It does not establish an extraordinary cause.

First, decide whether anyone is in danger

Do not follow a light into traffic, climb onto a roof, enter restricted property, or stand in an unsafe place to obtain a better view. Never point a laser at it or at any aircraft. Move to a safe location and observe from there.

  • Possible threat to life or property: Call your local emergency number or law-enforcement agency. In the United States, FAA safety guidance says dangerous activity should be reported to local law enforcement.
  • Laser aimed at an aircraft: Treat this as a specific aviation-safety incident, not merely a sky-identification puzzle. The FAA asks witnesses to email laserreports@faa.gov with their name and contact information, the date and time, and the incident’s location and description. The FAA or an appropriate law-enforcement agency may follow up.
  • No immediate danger: Remain where you are safe, observe without interfering, and make a contemporaneous record.

The FAA instructions above are U.S.-specific. Elsewhere, use the relevant local emergency, police and aviation-reporting services.

Make a record before trying to identify the light

Details disappear quickly, and later guesses can change your memory. Write or dictate the observations while the event is still fresh. Describe appearance rather than assigning a name such as “drone,” “UFO” or “meteor.”

  1. Date, local time and place: Record the date, the time the light first appeared, when it disappeared, and your observation location. A street address, coordinates or a clearly described landmark is more useful than a broad area.
  2. Position in the sky: Note the direction in which you first saw it (for example, southwest), its approximate elevation above the horizon, and the direction of any apparent travel. If you did not measure an angle, call it “near the horizon,” “about halfway up” or a similar visual estimate rather than claiming a precise altitude.
  3. Movement and duration: Record whether it appeared stationary, drifted, crossed the sky, stopped, or changed course from your viewpoint. Measure how long it was visible and, if it crossed a recognizable path, how long that passage took.
  4. Brightness and color: Compare its apparent brightness with nearby bright stars, as NASA recommends. Note color, flashing, dimming, brightening and whether the change was gradual or abrupt.
  5. Viewing conditions: State whether it was twilight or fully dark, and note clouds, haze, fog, moonlight and obstructions. The time relative to sunset matters because sunlight can illuminate a balloon or an otherwise unlit object.
  6. Independent witnesses: Ask other observers what they saw without suggesting an explanation first. Record their descriptions separately.
  7. Media: Keep the original photo or video file, including its metadata if available. Make copies for sharing, but do not replace the original with a compressed social-media download. Write down what you saw with your unaided eyes, because a camera-only feature may not have been visible in the sky.

A reliable record can support later comparison even when it cannot identify the object by itself.

Compare the observation with ordinary explanations

NASA’s Night Sky Network lists bright planets and stars, aircraft, rockets, weather balloons, satellites, meteors and fireballs, remote-control aircraft, clouds and camera artifacts among common sources of surprising lights. Use the clues below to narrow possibilities, not to claim certainty from one visual impression.

What you observed Explanations worth checking What the clue cannot prove
A bright point that seemed fixed in one part of the sky Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Sirius or another bright star; a distant aircraft viewed nearly head-on Stationary appearance does not establish that the object was a planet, star or aircraft.
A light that crossed the sky Aircraft, satellite, rocket, remote-control aircraft, meteor or fireball Direction and apparent speed alone do not identify which moving object you saw.
A very brief streak A meteor: NASA defines this as the visible streak produced when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrates; a brighter event may be called a fireball A witness description alone may not establish that a particular streak was a meteor.
A glow visible around twilight or after sunset Sunlight reflecting from a balloon, satellite or other high object; an aircraft whose lights were difficult to see Timing can make an explanation plausible but does not confirm the object.
An apparent object present only in a photograph or video Lens flare, internal reflections, aberration, dust or another camera artifact A camera feature is not evidence that an object was present in the sky.
A light that changed brightness Aircraft lighting, rotation or changing reflection from a satellite, atmospheric effects, or an exposure change Brightness changes have multiple possible causes and need the original recording and context.

Check the sky for planets and stars

Start with the simplest fixed-sky test. NASA specifically notes that Venus is a frequent source of questions and also identifies Sirius, Jupiter and Mercury as bright objects that can attract attention. Use planetarium software to plot the sky for your exact date, time and location. Match the plotted direction and altitude to your notes, allowing for an imprecise visual estimate.

Check whether the sighting occurred during twilight. A high object can remain sunlit after the ground is in darkness, while an aircraft’s lights may be difficult to distinguish against a bright sky. If the candidate object was below the horizon or in a different part of the sky at that moment, discard that hypothesis rather than forcing a match.

A physical planisphere can help compare the visible star field, but it is optional. It does not identify aircraft, satellites, meteors or every planet accurately for every date and location, so software is generally more flexible for a time-specific check.

Evaluate moving lights without overclaiming

Aircraft

Aircraft are a common explanation for lights that move across the sky or appear to hover when viewed from far away. Record the travel direction, duration and any changes in brightness. Do not infer altitude or speed from apparent motion alone; perspective can make a distant aircraft seem slow, fast or stationary.

Satellites

Satellites are another possibility for a light that travels across a dark sky, particularly when sunlight can still reach an object above the shadow of Earth. Check a current sky plot for the time and location. A match requires the predicted path and timing to agree with your record; a general resemblance is not enough.

Rockets and launches

Rockets can produce unusual shapes, changing brightness or spreading light. Note the complete sequence rather than only the most dramatic moment: when it appeared, how the glow changed, and where it moved. Without an independently verified launch time and path, describe a rocket as a possibility, not an identification.

Weather balloons and remote-control aircraft

Weather balloons can reflect sunlight even when the ground is dark, and remote-control aircraft can produce lights that look unusual at a distance. Their apparent behavior depends on viewing angle, wind and lighting. Keep these explanations in the candidate list when the observation occurred near twilight or at low apparent altitude, but do not assign one without corroborating details.

When a streak may be a meteor or fireball

NASA describes a meteor as the streak of light visible when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrates. A particularly bright meteor is commonly called a fireball. A short, sudden streak is therefore consistent with a meteor, but the description “I saw a streak” is not enough to establish what a specific event was.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record whether the streak lasted a fraction of a second or several seconds, whether it left a persistent train, whether it fragmented, and which direction it traveled. These details help an astronomy club or other knowledgeable observer compare your account with known sky events. Avoid adding details you did not see.

Check whether the camera created the apparent light

If you noticed the object only after reviewing a picture or video, examine the original file before interpreting it. NASA warns that lens flare and optical aberration can create apparent objects in photographs. Reflections from bright streetlights, the Moon or a phone flash may move with the camera rather than with the sky.

  • Compare several frames, if available, to see whether the feature changes position with the camera.
  • Look for a corresponding light visible to the unaided eye in your written record or in another observer’s account.
  • Preserve the unedited file and note the device, lens, exposure and direction in which it was pointed.
  • Do not treat digital zoom, sharpening or compression artifacts as additional evidence.

What “UAP” means—and what it does not mean

NASA’s September 12, 2023 media advisory defines UAP as “observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from a scientific perspective.” The term describes an unresolved observation, not a confirmed vehicle, technology or non-human origin.

The same advisory states that there are currently a limited number of high-quality observations, making it impossible to draw firm scientific conclusions about their nature. If your sighting remains unresolved after checking timing, direction, sky position, ordinary traffic and camera effects, the accurate conclusion is simply that it remains unidentified from the information available.

Where to ask for help

Share the observation record, not a dramatic conclusion. A local astronomy club can help compare the date, time, direction and brightness with the visible sky. NASA’s Night Sky Network recommends this route when ordinary checks do not resolve the sighting.

Reporting an unexplained sighting in the United States

For a general U.S. report about UAP or unexplained phenomena, the FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual directs members of the public to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). Follow the current AARO and FAA instructions when submitting a report, because procedures can change.

If the event may endanger life or property, use local law enforcement first. If it involves a laser directed at an aircraft, use the FAA laser-incident route and provide the requested contact information, date and time, location and description at laserreports@faa.gov. These channels serve different purposes; a laser strike should not be filed as an ordinary identification question.

Common mistakes that make an observation harder to assess

  • Waiting to write it down: Memory fills gaps with assumptions, especially about speed and shape.
  • Calling it identified too soon: “It looked like a satellite” is weaker than a timed path that agrees with a sky plot.
  • Estimating precise altitude or speed without measurement: Apparent size and motion are strongly affected by distance and perspective.
  • Sharing only a cropped or compressed image: Missing metadata and surrounding lights remove useful context.
  • Ignoring twilight: Sunlight can illuminate high objects after sunset.
  • Putting yourself in danger for a better view: No photograph is worth a traffic, fall or aviation-safety risk.
  • Using an emergency channel for a harmless mystery: Reserve emergency reporting for an actual threat, and use astronomy or aviation channels for non-urgent questions.
