If you reused your AT&T password elsewhere, change the AT&T password first, then replace the same or similar password on every other site and app. Use AT&T’s official account page or reset flow—not a link in an unexpected alert—and update saved credentials, AT&T Mail sign-ins, recovery details, and available account protections.

Reusing a password does not by itself prove that AT&T was breached. An AT&T compromised-password alert can mean that a saved ID/password combination appeared in a breach outside AT&T. Treat the alert as a prompt to secure every account that used the credential.

What should I do if I used my AT&T password on other websites?

Work in this order:

  1. Change the AT&T password through the official account profile or password-reset page.
  2. Change that password, and predictable variations of it, everywhere else you used them.
  3. Secure the email account and financial accounts connected to the old password.
  4. Update AT&T Mail, browsers, phones, tablets, password managers, and other apps that saved the old credential.
  5. Check recovery contacts, authorized users, passcodes, and wireless protections.
  6. Monitor for signs of account takeover and contact AT&T through a channel you reached independently if anything looks wrong.

Do not send a password, account PIN, one-time verification code, or security code to someone who contacts you claiming to be support.

1. Change your AT&T password first

If you can still sign in

  1. Sign in to your AT&T account using the official AT&T site or app that you normally open yourself.
  2. Open your account profile and go to Your info.
  3. Find Password, select Edit, enter a new password, and save it.

Use the account flow presented for your specific AT&T service. Account settings can differ by service and configuration, so a label or menu may not appear exactly the same way on every account.

Password Safe
  • Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
  • Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs

If you cannot sign in

  1. Open AT&T’s official password-reset flow directly, rather than through an unsolicited email, text, or pop-up.
  2. Enter your AT&T ID and the associated last name.
  3. Choose one of the verification methods AT&T offers and follow the prompts.

If no recovery option is available or the reset still fails, AT&T’s instructions list 800.288.2020 for help. Reach the number from an independently verified AT&T source, not from a suspicious message.

2. Create a genuinely new password

AT&T describes an 8–24 character password range and lists uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and supported special characters. Follow the requirements shown in your current AT&T form.

The critical change is not merely adding one character to the old password. Do not reuse the old credential or make a predictable edit such as changing a final number, swapping one symbol, or adding the current year. Avoid personal details, common words, and obvious sequences that someone who knows you could guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A password manager can generate and store a different password for each account. AT&T’s cyber-safety guidance presents password-manager apps as an aid for keeping track of separate IDs and passwords; using one is optional, not a prerequisite for changing your account.

3. Find every account that reused the credential

The Federal Trade Commission advises changing a reused password, or a similar one, on other services. Make a written inventory or use your password manager’s reuse report if it has one. Search for the exact old password and for patterns you commonly use, such as the same base word with a different site name, number, or punctuation.

Prioritize accounts that can unlock other accounts

Priority Accounts to handle Why they come first
1 Email used for password recovery Someone with access may request resets for many other services.
2 Financial, payment, tax, and shopping accounts They may expose money, payment details, or sensitive transaction history.
3 Mobile, cloud, and identity accounts They can control devices, files, recovery channels, or account-verification messages.
4 Social, work, school, gaming, and other services They still need unique credentials, even when they do not directly control recovery.

Change each account at its official site or app. If a service offers a sign-out-everywhere or revoke-sessions control, use it after changing the password so old sessions are not left active. The available control and wording depend on that service.

4. Update AT&T Mail and saved sign-ins

AT&T says that when an AT&T Mail address shares the AT&T ID credential, the new password must be used for AT&T Mail as well. Sign in to Mail with the replacement password and update any mail program that asks for credentials.

Check every place the old password may be stored

  • Browser password storage on each computer and phone.
  • Mobile and desktop mail applications.
  • AT&T apps and account widgets.
  • Tablets, streaming devices, and other connected equipment that uses the account.
  • Password-manager entries and exported or printed password lists.

Do not leave the old entry alongside the new one. Remove or replace duplicates so autofill does not continue submitting the compromised credential.

5. Secure recovery and account access

Verify recovery contacts

Review the email addresses and phone numbers AT&T shows for account recovery. Confirm that they belong to you and that you can receive verification messages on them. Remove an address or number you do not recognize, and investigate any recent change you did not make.

Review users and authorized access

Check secondary online users and authorized users on the account. Remove people or profiles that should no longer have access. This is separate from changing the password: an authorized user may retain account capabilities even after the credential is replaced, depending on the account setup.

Use account passcodes where available

AT&T describes an account passcode for store or phone interactions and an extra-security passcode for online wireless sign-in. Review the controls presented for your account and set or replace them if appropriate. Keep these codes separate from the account password and never disclose them to an unsolicited caller or texter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider Wireless Account Lock

For eligible wireless accounts, Wireless Account Lock can disable some transactions and account changes for devices and lines on the account. Check AT&T’s current eligibility rules and the exact actions it blocks before relying on it. It is an additional protection, not a substitute for a unique password and secure recovery contacts.

6. Turn on stronger sign-in protection when a service offers it

The FTC says two-factor authentication can prevent a person who has stolen your password from signing in without another authentication factor. When a service offers choices, the FTC says an authenticator app or security key provides more protection than text-message or email passcodes. Availability and supported methods vary by service, so enable the strongest option that the account actually provides and keep backup methods current.

Store recovery codes somewhere protected but accessible to you. Do not put them in a public note, send them to a stranger, or treat a verification code as proof that a caller is legitimate.

7. Recognize and handle a compromised-password alert

An AT&T compromised-password alert may indicate that a saved AT&T ID/password combination appeared in a breach at a non-AT&T service. The alert alone does not establish that AT&T itself was breached.

Open the AT&T app or site yourself and change the password there. AT&T specifically warns: “Never open links in password alert messages.” The same rule applies to password-reset emails and texts you did not request. If you are unsure, type the known address, use a saved official bookmark, or open the app from your device rather than tapping the message.

8. Check for signs someone already used the password

After changing credentials, inspect account activity and notifications for changes you did not make. AT&T identifies these warning signs:

  • An unexpected password reset or password-change message.
  • A sudden “No service” condition on a wireless line.
  • An unfamiliar SIM or eSIM activation prompt.
  • Password-reset emails that you did not request.
  • Unexpected address, shipping, recovery-contact, or account-profile changes.

If you see one, do not investigate through the suspicious message. Reach AT&T through the official app, a manually entered address, or a verified support number. Change the affected email password too, because control of the recovery email can undermine later resets. Preserve suspicious messages and account timestamps if you need to explain what happened to support.

Common mistakes that leave the risk in place

Changing only AT&T

A new AT&T password does not protect an unrelated site that still accepts the old credential. Search for every reuse, including minor variations.

Making a small predictable edit

Trusting the alert’s link

Unexpected alerts can be phishing attempts. Navigate independently and verify the destination before entering any credentials.

Forgetting devices and mail clients

An old password saved in a phone, browser, or mail app can cause repeated failed sign-ins or continue exposing the credential. Update or delete every stored copy.

Ignoring recovery access

An attacker who changed a recovery phone number, email address, secondary user, or authorized user may retain a path back into the account. Review those settings after the password change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an AT&T compromised-password alert mean AT&T was hacked?

No. AT&T says the alert can mean a saved ID/password combination appeared in a breach outside AT&T; the alert alone does not prove an AT&T breach.

What if I no longer know my AT&T password?

Use AT&T’s official reset flow with your AT&T ID and associated last name, select an offered verification method, and follow the prompts. If no recovery option works, AT&T lists 800.288.2020 for support.

Should I change passwords that are only similar to the old AT&T password?

Yes. The FTC advises changing reused or similar passwords on other services because a predictable variation can be tested alongside the exposed credential.
