Sometimes you can return a TV without its original box, but there is no universal rule. The retailer, seller, TV size, order eligibility and return method determine what is allowed. Start the return from the order page and follow the option shown for that specific television before you move or ship it.
For a large set, ask first about an in-store return, retailer-arranged pickup or another large-item method. Do not assume that a normal parcel label, a replacement carton or an unpackaged handoff will be accepted.
Why the missing box does not have a simple yes-or-no answer
Retailers treat a television differently depending on how it was sold and how it can be transported. A store return may avoid customer repackaging entirely, while a mail or carrier route can require a securely packed carton. Large and heavy sets may be excluded from ordinary prepaid-label programs even when smaller electronics qualify.
The order-specific instructions also matter. They can reflect the seller, the return window, the item’s condition, the available transportation method and proof-of-purchase requirements. Losing the manufacturer carton does not by itself prove that a return is allowed or forbidden.

The safest sequence is:
- Open the retailer account and select the TV in your order history.
- Choose the return or exchange reason and read every method offered.
- Check whether the method says store drop-off, pickup, mail, carrier drop-off or another retailer-arranged service.
- Ask customer support whether a non-original box is permitted before buying packaging or booking transportation.
These instructions concern U.S. return routes. Policies, sellers and available services can differ in other countries.
Check the retailer’s current return path
Best Buy
Best Buy’s U.S. return policy says eligible shipped-and-sold purchases can be returned at a Best Buy store. It also describes prepaid return labels for eligible shipped returns, but expressly excludes TVs over 50 inches from that shipping route. A large television therefore should not be treated like a normal boxed parcel.
The same policy directs customers to call about return and pickup options for certain heavy items delivered by truck. If your set is large, was truck-delivered or does not show a practical label option, contact Best Buy before attempting transport.

Walmart
Walmart’s online return instructions say the available methods appear when you start the return and vary by item. A store return may require no repackaging by you. Other options can include scheduled pickup, mail or an eligible FedEx drop-off, with repackaging required for the method that applies.
For shipping from home or taking the item to a carrier location, Walmart says to securely repackage it. If the television is oversized or you cannot take it to a local carrier, its instructions say to contact customer care rather than improvising a shipment.
Walmart’s standard return policy recommends keeping manufacturer packaging and the receipt for at least 90 days. That is a recommendation, not a universal statement that every return without a box is rejected. The method and eligibility shown for your order control.

Amazon
An older Amazon consumer article, “Tips for buying a TV on Prime Day,” says a TV can be shipped back, collected by UPS or dropped at an Amazon return center, and states that the TV needs its original packaging. Because that is general, older guidance rather than a current determination for every order, use the return instructions displayed for your purchase or ask Amazon for a decision before packing or transporting the set.

Compare the return methods before choosing one

For Best Buy, TVs over 50 inches are excluded from the prepaid-label route described in its policy. For Walmart, the order page determines whether store, pickup, mail or carrier drop-off is available. These are not interchangeable options.
What to do first: a safe, order-based procedure
- Leave the TV where it is. Do not dismantle the stand or move the set through doorways until you know whether a store, pickup or shipping route applies.
- Open the original order. Use the retailer’s website or app, select the television and start the return. Record the seller name, eligibility date and every method offered.
- Look for size or handling restrictions. Note any wording about oversized items, truck delivery, carrier limits or a requirement to use original packaging.
- Contact support with a precise question. Ask: “Can this exact TV be returned without its original box, and which approved method should I use?” Include the order number, screen size and whether the set is complete and undamaged.
- Get the answer tied to the order. Save the chat transcript, email or case number. If support approves a replacement box or pickup, follow that instruction rather than a generic policy page.
- Prepare only after approval. Gather the television, remote, stand, cables, paperwork and proof of purchase where available. The sources do not establish a universal accessory checklist, so verify what your order requires.
If customer-arranged shipping is approved
Do not buy a carton merely because it looks large enough. First confirm that the retailer permits you to arrange shipment and accepts a replacement package. The following is protective packing guidance, not a guarantee that a carrier will accept the package or that damage will be covered.
Use a rigid, correctly sized carton
Choose a purpose-built TV shipping or moving box sized to the television, including its depth and any required stand or protection. A box that is too loose allows movement; one that is too tight can press on the panel. A modular replacement package, such as the “TV taco” packaging described in Best Buy’s report, is an example of purpose-built handling equipment, not a product recommendation or customer entitlement.
Protect the panel and edges
- Keep the screen from bearing pressure from the carton, straps or other parts.
- Protect all four corners and the perimeter, where impacts can transfer into the panel.
- Immobilize the television so it cannot slide, rotate or contact the box walls.
- Use cushioning that fills movement gaps without pushing against the screen.
- Place the remote, cables, stand and other accessories so they cannot strike the display.
Close and label it according to the approved route
Seal the carton as the retailer and carrier instruct. Use the supplied label only for the approved item and service. Do not substitute a regular parcel service for a large-item or freight instruction, and do not assume that a carrier will collect an unpackaged set.

Keep evidence before handoff
Photograph the television while it is intact, the packed carton, the label and the handoff receipt. Keep the return authorization, tracking information and support correspondence until the refund or exchange is complete. These records do not change the retailer’s policy, but they document what was surrendered and when.
What to bring or include with the TV
Unless the order gives different instructions, keep the complete set together:
- The television and its remote control.
- The stand, feet, screws and any supplied mounting hardware.
- Power and other included cables.
- Manuals, warranty paperwork and accessories that arrived with the order.
- The receipt, order number or other proof of purchase.
Do not discard an accessory simply because the box is missing. Conversely, do not claim that every retailer requires every accessory: use the item-specific instructions and ask support when the order is unclear.

The website says “original packaging required”
Do not ship anyway. Ask whether the retailer offers a store return, pickup or an approved replacement package for this order. Amazon’s older TV guidance uses original-packaging language, while current order instructions may be more specific.

No return method appears
Check the seller and order status, then contact support. The absence of a button does not tell you whether a large-item pickup is available; support may need to arrange it manually.
The TV is over a normal label-size limit
Do not fold, compress or split the television into multiple parcels. Best Buy’s policy specifically excludes TVs over 50 inches from its prepaid-label shipping route. Ask about a store or pickup option instead.
You cannot safely carry it to a carrier
Tell the retailer that the item is oversized or cannot be taken to a local carrier. Walmart’s instructions direct customers with that problem to customer care. Request a retailer-arranged pickup or another approved method.
The carton is gone but the TV is damaged
Report the condition accurately in the return flow and photograph it before moving it. Do not pack a visibly damaged panel as if it were undamaged, and ask the retailer whether a separate damage process applies.
A marketplace or third-party seller is involved
Confirm which seller issued the order and whose return instructions govern it. The retailer’s general policy may not describe the seller’s approved method, packaging rule or pickup responsibility.
How to decide without wasting money
Use this order of preference:
- Retailer pickup: best when the set is large, heavy or difficult to protect during a car trip.
- Store return: practical when the order explicitly permits it and you can transport the television upright and safely.
- Retailer-approved shipping with supplied or approved packaging: use only when the label or freight instruction clearly covers that TV.
- Self-arranged shipping: last resort, and only after written or recorded confirmation that both the method and replacement package are acceptable.
A replacement box, corner protection and cushioning can cost money, but buying them before confirming the method may be unnecessary. A store return or pickup can eliminate that purchase; an unauthorized shipment can create a separate problem if the carrier or seller rejects it.
Bottom line for a TV without its box
Start with the specific order, not a general internet rule. Ask the retailer to identify an approved store return, pickup or shipping method for your TV, especially when it is over 50 inches or was delivered by truck. If customer-arranged shipping is approved, use a rigid, properly sized TV carton with screen, edge and corner protection, and retain proof of the handoff. Until the retailer confirms the route, do not move the television or buy packaging.
