If your World of Warcraft gold appears to have vanished, first trace ordinary transactions and check whether the problem affects one character or every character. Auction House and vendor purchases, mailed gold, guild-bank deposits, WoW Token activity, and an addon display problem can all explain a lower balance. If every character is missing gold, treat the situation as a possible account compromise and follow Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance. When those checks do not explain the discrepancy, report the suspected bug in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum, but do not assume a report guarantees that the gold will be restored.
Start by defining exactly what changed
Write down the character, realm, approximate previous balance, current balance, and the last time you remember seeing the expected amount. Then compare the affected character with your other characters. This simple scope check determines which explanation deserves priority.

A lower number is evidence of a discrepancy, not proof that game code deleted currency. Keep the original details while you investigate; they will make a bug report or security review much more useful.
Check normal gold movements before reporting a bug
Review Auction House and vendor purchases
Look for an expensive Auction House purchase or a high-value vendor transaction made around the time the balance changed. Include purchases made after a login you do not remember, because an unauthorized transaction can look like a bug. If you recognize the purchase, the missing amount has an ordinary explanation even if you did not notice the confirmation at the time.

Check each relevant character rather than only the one you normally play. The discrepancy may be tied to a purchase on an alternate character, especially if you switch between characters on the same realm.
Inspect mail transfers
Gold can be mailed to another character, another player, a friend, or a guildmate. Check sent and received mail, including mailboxes on other characters that share the realm. A transfer can be deliberate, accidental, or unauthorized; the important first step is to establish where the amount went.
Record the recipient, sender, amount, and approximate time if the transfer is unfamiliar. Those details help distinguish a normal transfer from a security incident and give you concrete facts to include in a report.
Check the guild bank
A deposit to a guild bank reduces the personal balance while leaving the gold inside the guild’s storage. Ask trusted guild officers whether a deposit was made and compare the guild-bank history with your notes. Do not assume that a missing personal balance means the currency was destroyed.
Consider a WoW Token purchase
A Token transaction can change which character gold is available for the purchase. Blizzard says that, when a Token is purchased from the character-selection screen, the system can draw on characters’ gold on one realm, including gold held in mailboxes. It does not recognize gold in a Warband bank. Consequently, the amount you expected to be available may differ from the amount the Token system can actually use.

Token rules vary by game mode and region. Check Blizzard’s current Token guidance for the account, mode, and region involved rather than applying a rule from another version of the game. A Token-related balance difference is not, by itself, proof of a currency-loss bug.
Rule out an addon display problem
Blizzard lists addons as another possible reason a character appears to have less gold than expected. Compare the balance in the standard game interface with the addon’s display. If the numbers differ, temporarily use the unmodified interface or disable the suspected addon, then check again after a fresh character view. Blizzard’s missing-gold guidance identifies the possibility but does not prescribe a particular addon troubleshooting procedure, so treat this as a practical isolation test rather than an official restoration method.
Keep screenshots of both displays if the discrepancy persists. They can show whether the problem is only visual or whether the underlying balance also changed.
When every character is missing gold, switch to account security
Blizzard Support’s Missing Gold in World of Warcraft article states: “If you are missing all the gold in all your characters, your account might have been compromised.” This warning applies even when you initially suspect a game bug. An account-wide loss is a security signal, not something to dismiss as an addon or a single-character transaction.
Follow Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance for the account. Preserve your notes about the last known balance, unfamiliar mail, purchases, and login timing. Avoid deleting messages or other evidence while you investigate. If another person had access to the account, include that fact in the security report.

The one-character versus all-character distinction is diagnostic, not absolute. A sophisticated unauthorized transfer could affect one character, and a display problem could make several balances appear wrong. Use the scope as a priority signal, then verify the underlying transactions.
Use the right channel for a suspected game bug
If purchases, mail, guild-bank activity, Token rules, and addon display issues do not account for the loss, report the behavior in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum. Blizzard’s Token guidance directs players there for potential bugs or feedback about how the system should work.
Prepare a concise, factual report. Include:
- Character name and realm.
- Approximate date and time, including your time zone if it could matter.
- Approximate amount missing and the last balance you can verify.
- The action immediately before the discrepancy, such as a purchase, mail transfer, guild-bank deposit, or Token transaction.
- Whether the issue affects one character or every character.
- Any error message, unusual screen behavior, or difference between the standard interface and an addon.
- Screenshots or other records that show the discrepancy without exposing account credentials.
Describe what you observed instead of asserting an unverified cause. “The balance changed after a Token purchase” is more useful than “the Token system deleted my gold” unless you have evidence that establishes the latter.
A bug report is a report to the development and community-support process, not a reimbursement request. The cited Blizzard guidance does not promise that filing a report will restore lost gold, so do not represent the forum as a guaranteed recovery route.
Do not confuse a bug with a trade scam or an item-loss case
Trade scams
If you voluntarily traded gold to another player and the other party failed to deliver what was promised, that is a trade-scam situation rather than an unexplained balance bug. Blizzard’s Trade Scams article says: “Customer Support does not restore items or gold in these situations.” The statement is specific to trade scams; it should not be expanded into a claim about every possible software error.

Report the suspected scam through the channel Blizzard provides for that situation and preserve the trade details. Blizzard may take action against a reported account when it verifies a scam, but that possibility is separate from restoring your currency.
Item Restoration
Blizzard’s Item Restoration tool addresses eligible items that were sold, destroyed, or disenchanted. It is not a tool for restoring gold. Sending a gold-loss case to Item Restoration can therefore put it in the wrong workflow and create the false expectation that an item-recovery service covers currency.
Use Item Restoration only when the missing object is an eligible item and the loss matches that tool’s stated purpose. Keep the currency discrepancy in the bug-report or account-security path that fits its cause.

The Token system’s gold source is easy to misunderstand because different storage locations are treated differently. For a character-select-screen Token purchase, Blizzard says character gold on one realm can be used, and mailbox gold can count. The system will not recognize gold in a Warband bank. That means a player may see substantial Warband savings yet still have insufficient recognized gold for the Token transaction.

This rule describes what the Token system can access; it does not establish that a balance bug occurred. Check the current official Token page for the applicable game mode and region, because availability and rules are not universal across every WoW environment.

When documenting a Token-related discrepancy, note whether the gold was on a character, in that character’s mailbox, or in a Warband bank. Also note whether the transaction began from the character-selection screen or from another in-game context. Those distinctions help readers and support staff interpret the same balance number correctly.
A practical decision path
- Capture the discrepancy. Record character, realm, amount, approximate time, and screenshots of the balance.
- Check purchases. Review recent Auction House and vendor activity for an amount that matches the change.
- Check transfers. Inspect mail to and from other characters or players, then check the guild bank.
- Check Token activity. Determine whether a Token purchase occurred and where the relevant gold was stored. Remember that Warband bank gold is not recognized for the character-select purchase described by Blizzard.
- Check the display. Compare the standard interface with any addon that reports currency.
- Assess scope. If every character is affected, follow Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance before treating the issue as a visual glitch.
- Report only after verification. If the evidence still points to a game defect, post a factual report in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum.
This sequence avoids two costly mistakes: reporting a normal transfer as a software defect and treating a possible compromise as harmless bookkeeping.
What a useful report should and should not claim
A strong report separates confirmed facts from inferences. State the balance before and after, the actions you can verify, and the interfaces in which the number appears. If you cannot identify a transaction, say that you found no matching purchase, mail, guild-bank deposit, or Token activity. Do not invent a precise timestamp when you only know the day.

Keeping that limitation clear prevents confusion between submitting evidence and receiving compensation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming one low balance proves deletion: investigate the listed transactions first.
- Ignoring other characters: the scope of the loss changes the security priority.
- Counting Warband bank gold in a Token purchase: Blizzard says the Token system does not recognize it for the described purchase flow.
- Disabling every addon without recording the original state: capture the conflicting displays so you can explain what changed.
- Sending a currency case to Item Restoration: that tool concerns eligible items sold, destroyed, or disenchanted.
- Treating a trade scam as a bug: Blizzard’s trade-scam policy has a different support outcome.
- Writing a report around a theory: give times, amounts, actions, and observable behavior instead.
Where the investigation should end
Once you have matched the amount to a purchase, transfer, guild-bank deposit, or Token rule, the balance change has an identifiable explanation. If an addon is the only place showing the lower number, the problem is a display discrepancy rather than confirmed currency loss. If every character is affected, continue with account-security steps. If none of those paths explains the evidence, the Bug Report Forum is the appropriate place to document a suspected game defect, with no guarantee of restoration.
