If you think a spyware or stalkerware app is on your phone, assume for now that the person monitoring it may see searches, calls, messages, location, and changes you make. Do not rush to uninstall the app or reset the phone. Use a device the suspected monitor has never accessed to contact a domestic-abuse advocate, technology-safety specialist, or other trusted support person and make a plan.
A battery or data problem is not proof of spyware, and a factory reset is not a guaranteed cure for account access or every kind of tracking. The safest next step depends on your immediate danger, whether you need evidence, what the monitor may notice, and whether you can obtain a genuinely separate device and account.
Start with a safer way to get help
If the phone may be monitored, avoid searching for help, calling an advocate, or discussing your plan on it. Even a search, outgoing call, detection alert, or uninstall can reveal that you are taking action. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises, “If you’re concerned your phone might be monitored, consider leaving it behind when you’re seeking help.”
Use a borrowed phone, a public or workplace phone where appropriate, or a pay-as-you-go phone that the suspected monitor has not handled. The Coalition Against Stalkerware likewise recommends a device to which the other person has not had physical access. If you face immediate danger, contact local emergency services through a safe means of communication rather than using the suspected phone.

U.S. support
In the United States, the FTC’s June 2026 guidance lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), live chat at thehotline.org, and text by sending START to 88788. Do not look up these details on a phone you believe is monitored. Outside the United States, use a local survivor-support organization or technology-abuse service; laws, emergency numbers, and confidentiality practices differ by country.
Plan before making a visible change
Ask an advocate or technology-safety specialist what the suspected monitor might notice and whether changing the phone could increase harassment, surveillance, or violence. A personalized plan may include where to go, who can safely hold documents, how to communicate, and whether to preserve the phone for later assessment. There is no single action that is safe for everyone.

Do not treat a symptom as proof
Spyware can be difficult to identify, and some forms have no obvious side effects. The FTC suggests asking questions such as:
- “Is my battery draining faster than usual?”
- “Am I unexpectedly using more data?”
- “Is my phone overheating?”
- Has the phone restarted unexpectedly?
- Does another person know your exact location, private conversations, or who you text when they should not?
These clues justify a careful assessment but can also result from a failing battery, a software update, ordinary background activity, poor reception, or legitimate account sharing. Conversely, a phone can appear normal while an account, cloud backup, Bluetooth device, family-safety feature, or another technology exposes information. Someone who knows your location or messages may have gained access to an account rather than installed an app.
Platform examples, not a do-it-yourself diagnosis
The Coalition notes that Android stalkerware may be hidden or installed outside the official app store. Its guidance links to specialist information and CETA guidance about hidden and sideloaded apps. On iPhone and iPad, monitoring may instead draw data from iCloud backups. These are examples, not a complete diagnostic procedure. Menu names and security controls vary by model and software version, so do not assume that an unfamiliar icon or setting proves abuse.
Get advice and consider evidence before changing the phone
An advocate or specialist can help you decide whether to inspect, scan, remove, replace, or leave the phone untouched. Explain what you have noticed, who may have had physical access, whether the person knows your passcode, and whether there is a risk of confrontation. Ask specifically about evidence, escalation, and a safe way to communicate.

When preserving evidence may matter
If you may seek protection, legal help, workplace assistance, or a formal report, screenshots, dates, messages, account alerts, and the original device may be useful. The FTC says an advocate can discuss preservation. The Coalition warns that deleting stalkerware can also delete evidence. Do not document or retain anything if doing so creates additional danger; your safety takes priority over a complete record. A support organization can suggest a secure place and method for storing notes or images.
Compare removal and replacement options
Choose an option with a specialist when possible. The right choice balances immediate safety, evidence, the chance of reinfection, cost, and whether the suspected monitor can reach your accounts.
| Option | When it may fit | Cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist- or advocate-assisted assessment | You are unsure what is happening or whether an action is safe. | Contact from a safer device and ask what the monitor could see, whether an alert will be generated, and how evidence should be handled. |
| Security scan | You want another detection signal and can safely run it. | A clean result does not prove the phone is free of monitoring. An alert may be visible, and automatic removal can create safety or evidence risks. |
| Factory reset | You will keep the phone and have decided that resetting is safe. | It can erase evidence, may not close separate account access, and an old backup can restore the unwanted app. Set up as new and reinstall only needed apps from official stores. |
| New phone and separate account | A genuinely safer device is feasible and obtaining it will not increase danger. | It may be expensive or unsafe to acquire. Plan the purchase, number, account, and storage with a trusted advocate. |
| Manual app removal | You have reliable, platform-specific help and judge removal safe. | Hidden apps or elevated privileges can make removal difficult. The action may alert the person or destroy evidence. |
The Coalition describes a new phone as the best way to get rid of stalkerware and a factory reset as almost as effective, while emphasizing safety, cost, evidence, and reinstallation issues. The FTC presents a new phone as a possible safest way to protect yourself and says to consider a full reset if you keep the existing phone. Neither source promises that any option eliminates every form of surveillance.

If you choose a factory reset
Make this decision with support if there is any chance the monitor will react. A reset removes local content and apps, so it can destroy useful evidence and can leave you without contacts, photos, or authentication codes. Back up only what you need and understand exactly what the backup contains.

- From a safer device, identify essential contacts, documents, photos, and account-recovery methods. Do not make a full app backup if it could contain the unwanted app or its settings.
- Record or preserve evidence first if an advocate says it is safe.
- Use the phone’s official reset process. Menu labels differ by manufacturer and software version; follow the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than an unfamiliar online sequence.
- During setup, choose the option to set the phone up as new. Do not restore a complete old-device app backup.
- Install only the applications you actually need, and download them again from official app stores. The FTC’s instruction is: “Instead, download them again from the app store.”
- Apply operating-system and app updates when doing so will not reveal your plan or create another safety risk.
A reset cannot by itself remove access to an email, Apple, Google, social-media, banking, or other account. If someone still controls an account, they may regain information even after the phone is clean.
If you obtain a new phone
A new unlocked or pay-as-you-go phone is optional, not a requirement. It can be expensive, may attract attention, and may not be safe to store or activate without a plan. An advocate can help you decide where to obtain it, whether to use a new number, and how to keep the new account separate.
- Use a new device that the suspected monitor has not handled.
- Create a separate account with a strong, unique password from a safer device.
- Do not clone the old phone or restore every old app and setting.
- Reinstall needed apps individually from official stores and review their permissions.
- Tell only people who need to know about the new number or account, considering whether their devices or shared accounts could disclose it.
Secure accounts as well as the handset
From a device the suspected monitor has not accessed, change passwords for your primary email, Apple or Google account, social networks, banking, health services, cloud storage, and any account that can reset another password. Use long, unique passwords; a password manager can help if it is safe for your situation. Turn on two-factor authentication using a method the monitor cannot control, such as a newly secured authenticator or phone number.
Review active sessions, recovery email addresses, recovery phone numbers, trusted devices, forwarding rules, location sharing, family or household groups, and connected applications. Sign out unknown sessions and remove unfamiliar recovery methods only after considering whether the change will alert someone or cut off your own access. Ask a specialist for help if the account may be jointly owned or controlled.

Protect physical access
Use an automatic screen lock and a passcode the suspected monitor does not know. Do not reuse a passcode used for banking, email, or another device. Keep the operating system and apps updated when safe. Stalkerware often depends on someone obtaining physical access to an unlocked phone; removing one app does not prevent that person from installing another if they can unlock the device again.
What security scans can and cannot tell you
Security software may provide a useful additional signal, but detection is imperfect. EFF and AV-Comparatives’ Stalkerware Test 2025 evaluated 17 commercial stalkerware apps in September 2025 on a non-rooted Samsung Galaxy A36 running Android 15 over Wi-Fi, using the latest app versions available at the time. Detection varied substantially, and Google Play Protect detected only around half of the tested stalkerware. The report was published in November 2025 at eff.org/files/2025/11/05/avc_stalkerware_2025.pdf.
That result is a dated test under specific Android conditions, not a ranking of current products, a test of iPhones, or proof that your phone is compromised or clean. A scan can miss hidden, modified, newly released, or account-based monitoring. A warning may be visible to the person who installed the software, and automated removal can erase evidence or trigger retaliation. If you run a scan, first ask an advocate whether the timing and result can be handled safely.
After removal, watch for reinfection and account access
Keep the new passcode private, limit physical access, and review app permissions periodically. Be cautious about anyone offering to “fix” the phone who asks for your passcode or account credentials. If monitoring returns, do not repeatedly reset or uninstall in a panic; use a safer device to contact support and record what happened only if that is safe.
Technology safety is part of a broader safety plan. A domestic-abuse advocate, local survivor service, or qualified digital-security professional can help coordinate housing, communication, legal, financial, and device decisions. The goal is not to prove spyware at any cost; it is to reduce danger while protecting your accounts, privacy, and choices.
Key decisions at a glance
- Immediate danger: leave the suspected phone behind and contact emergency services or a local support service safely.
- Uncertain symptoms: treat battery, heat, data, and unusual behavior as clues, not confirmation.
- Possible evidence: ask an advocate before resetting, scanning, replacing, or deleting anything.
- Reset chosen: set up as new and reinstall only necessary apps from official stores; do not restore a full old app backup.
- Accounts exposed: change passwords and enable two-factor authentication from a safer device.
- Physical access risk: use a private passcode and automatic lock, and plan how to prevent reinstallation.
For source-specific guidance, see the FTC’s “Stalkerware: What To Know” and the Coalition Against Stalkerware’s survivor information. Both emphasize planning for safety rather than assuming that one technical action solves every case.
