First check every place the credential may still exist: the browser account’s password manager, another profile, a signed-in device, a different browser, or an export. Chrome can store passwords in a Google Account or only on the device; Firefox relies on its own profiles and Sync; Apple uses iCloud Keychain. If no copy is found, the dependable solution is the website’s official Forgot password or account-recovery process. A reset gives you a new password—it normally cannot restore the deleted browser entry.
Do not assume the password is gone everywhere
Deleting a login from one browser view does not prove that every synchronized or local copy was erased. Before changing anything else, identify the browser, device, profile, and account that were active when the password was saved.
- Account-synced storage: A browser may have copied the entry to an online password manager tied to your account.
- Device-local storage: A signed-out browser can keep credentials only in its local profile.
- Another profile or device: A work profile, personal profile, old computer, phone, or tablet may still contain the login.
- An export: A password-manager CSV or other backup may provide a copy, provided it was created before deletion and is protected.
Do not sign out of profiles, clear browser data, uninstall the browser, reset a device, or overwrite an old profile while investigating. Those actions can remove the remaining copy you are trying to find.

- Write down what you remember. Record the service name, possible domain, username or email address, and which browser and device you used. A remembered username helps distinguish several entries for the same service.
- Check the browser’s password manager. Search the site’s domain, its app name, and familiar brand or service names. Imported entries are sometimes filed under an unexpected name.
- Check the correct browser profile. Look at every profile on the computer or phone, including profiles that are signed out. A password saved locally belongs to that profile.
- Check synchronized devices. Open the password manager on another device that used the same browser account or Apple account. Do this before changing synchronization settings.
- Look for an earlier export or backup. Search only locations you control, such as an encrypted drive or a protected backup folder. Do not upload a password CSV to a random recovery site.
- Reset the account if no saved copy remains. Use the service’s own recovery page, not a third-party service claiming it can reveal the old password.
Chrome and Google Password Manager
Chrome has two relevant storage modes. When you are signed in and saving to your Google Account, the entry can be managed through Google Password Manager, including at passwords.google.com. When you are signed out, Chrome can keep passwords in the device’s local profile instead. Therefore, an empty Google Account list does not by itself prove that a local Chrome profile has no saved login.

Check the Google Account store
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Open Passwords and autofill, then Google Password Manager. The exact wording can vary slightly by Chrome release.
- Confirm that the Google Account shown is the one that was active when the password was saved.
- Search by the website domain, the service’s familiar name, and the name of its mobile app. Open an entry only when the site and username match.
- If Chrome offers to authenticate you with the device lock, fingerprint, or another local check, complete that check before viewing the password.
You can also inspect the account manager at passwords.google.com while signed in to the same Google Account. If the entry is not there, return to Chrome and inspect each local profile; account storage and device-only storage are different.
Check imports and alternate names
Google notes that imported passwords may be difficult to locate when the original app or site name did not migrate exactly as expected. Search several spellings, the base domain without a subdomain, and the name of the app that created the login. If you used more than one Google Account, repeat the check without merging or deleting profiles.
What a missing Chrome entry means
If the entry is absent from the correct Google Account, every relevant local profile, and other signed-in devices, Chrome does not provide a general promise that a deleted item can be restored. Move to the website’s official recovery process rather than repeatedly clearing or reinstalling Chrome.

Firefox Password Manager is separate from Google Password Manager. A password saved in Firefox will not automatically appear in Chrome simply because both browsers are installed on the same computer.

Inspect the active Firefox profile
- Open Firefox’s menu and choose Passwords (older releases may show Logins and Passwords).
- Search by the domain, service name, and username. Check for multiple entries for the same site.
- If the list is empty or unexpectedly short, confirm that Firefox opened the profile you normally use. Separate profiles have separate login databases.
Confirm that logins were included in Sync
Open Firefox Settings, select your Firefox account, and review Sync settings. Make sure Logins and passwords is enabled for the account that was active when the login was saved. Check another signed-in Firefox device before changing the setting. Sync can make a login available elsewhere, but it cannot guarantee recovery after an entry has been deleted from every synchronized copy.
Import an existing Firefox export
If you previously exported Firefox logins to a CSV file, use Firefox Password Manager’s import option to bring that file back. Treat the CSV as highly sensitive: anyone who can open it can read the credentials. After a successful import, remove the unprotected CSV from the device and any unencrypted recycle-bin or backup copies.
Mozilla Support recommends checking the correct profile, confirming Sync settings, and importing an existing CSV when logins disappear. If those checks find nothing, Mozilla’s guidance is to contact the website and reset the login.
Safari and Apple devices: check iCloud Keychain
Safari passwords are stored through Apple’s password system, commonly iCloud Keychain, rather than through Google Password Manager. Check an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that used the same Apple Account and may not yet have been affected by the deletion.

Verify Keychain synchronization
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, select your Apple Account, open iCloud, and look for the Passwords and Keychain setting. On some versions the label is simply Passwords.
- Mac: Open System Settings, select your Apple Account, choose iCloud, and verify that Passwords and Keychain is enabled.
- Open the Passwords app or Safari’s saved-password view on another Apple device and search by domain and username.
Apple states that Keychain items are not part of iCloud Backup because they synchronize separately through iCloud. Restoring an iPhone or Mac backup therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed way to restore Keychain passwords.
Important deletion conditions
Apple documents that disabling iCloud Keychain on all devices removes the Keychain from iCloud, and resetting the Mac keychain deletes its items. Do not turn Keychain off on every device or reset a Mac keychain while you are still trying to locate a login. If the password is absent from every Apple device and Keychain copy, use the website’s account-recovery flow.
Microsoft Edge and other browsers
The available evidence does not establish a universal Edge-specific undelete procedure. Open the current Edge password manager, check the Microsoft account that was active, inspect each local profile, and look on another synchronized device. If the entry is missing, use Microsoft’s current support instructions and the website’s own reset process rather than relying on an unverified recovery tool. The same principle applies to any other browser: identify its account store, local profile, synchronization, and backups before concluding that deletion is permanent.

- The full login domain and its base domain.
- The mobile or desktop app name.
- A parent company or familiar service name.
- The username or email address used for the account.
- Alternate browser profiles and secondary Google, Firefox, or Apple accounts.
Look at the date or device information shown by the manager when available. A similarly named entry for a different account is not a recovery of the missing credential. Do not edit or delete near-matching entries until you have confirmed the username and domain.
Reset the account when no saved copy remains
When the password is not in any manager, profile, device, or protected export, the website’s official Forgot password, Reset password, or account-recovery flow is the reliable path. The provider may ask for a recovery email, phone number, authenticator approval, backup code, or answers to identity questions. Requirements and waiting periods are specific to that service.
- Navigate to the service by typing its known address or using an official app you already trust.
- Select Forgot password or the equivalent recovery option.
- Complete the provider’s identity checks using contact methods you control.
- Create a new, unique password when the provider allows it.
- Sign in again and update the saved entry in your chosen password manager.
For a forgotten Google Account or Gmail password, Google directs users to its account-recovery process and asks them to answer identity questions. Recovery establishes access to the account; it does not reveal a browser password that was already deleted.

No legitimate helper needs your existing password or a one-time verification code to “extract” a deleted browser entry. Google Account Help states: “We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.” Do not pay an unofficial service, install remote-control software at its request, or send screenshots containing recovery codes.

- Enter credentials only on the service’s genuine sign-in or recovery page.
- Never forward a one-time code, backup code, or approval notification to another person.
- If you already disclosed a password, reset it immediately anywhere it was reused and review active sessions and security alerts.

Protect the replacement password
After regaining access, save the new password in the manager you intend to use and verify that it appears on another signed-in device if cross-device access matters. Keep browsers and password managers signed in only on devices you control.
An encrypted export can provide a future backup if you can protect it properly. Google warns that an exported CSV can be opened by anyone with access to the device and recommends deleting the CSV after importing it. An export made after deletion is a preventive backup, not a method for recovering the old entry.
Use a distinct password for every important account, keep recovery email and phone details current, and store backup codes in a protected location. These steps reduce the damage from a future deletion, but they cannot reconstruct a credential for which no copy remains.
