The correct recovery step depends on what the password protects. An ordinary website password can usually be replaced through that service’s official reset process. A password-manager master password may protect the key that decrypts your entire vault, so the provider may be unable to restore the saved passwords. A recovery phrase or key is a separate credential, not automatically the password you forgot.
First identify the service and credential type, then use only the service’s current, official recovery instructions. Do not delete a vault, reset an encrypted device, or enter a recovery phrase into a link from an unsolicited message until you understand what data could be lost.
Identify exactly what you forgot
A passphrase is simply a way of constructing a password: several words, a sentence, or another memorable sequence. Once used as an account password, it follows the same recovery rules as any other password. The complication is that people often use “passphrase,” “master password,” and “recovery phrase” interchangeably even though they can have different functions.
| Credential | What it protects | Typical next action |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary account password | One website, app, email account, or service | Use that service’s official “forgot password” or account-recovery flow. |
| Password-manager master password | The vault and, in many designs, the key needed to decrypt every saved credential | Check recovery methods and still-authorized devices before attempting a reset. |
| Recovery phrase or recovery key | A preconfigured way to regain access, approve recovery, or decrypt data | Use the provider’s instructions for that exact phrase or key; it may not be accepted as the normal sign-in password. |
| Encrypted file or device password | A local disk, backup, archive, or encrypted document | Look for the product’s recovery key or backup procedure before reinitializing or deleting anything. |
Write down the product name, the device or browser involved, and the screen where sign-in fails. That information determines which instructions apply. A phrase that unlocks one service cannot be assumed to unlock another.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Safe first steps before trying to reset anything
- Confirm the account. Open the installed app or type the service’s address yourself. Check that you are using the right region, workspace, or account identity. Do not rely on a link in an unexpected email or text.
- Separate the credentials. Decide whether the missing item is the ordinary sign-in password, a password-manager master password, a recovery phrase/key, or an encryption password for a file or device.
- Read the provider’s current recovery instructions. Recovery options and data-loss rules differ by service and can change when a product updates its encryption model.
- Check for existing access before signing out. Look at other phones, computers, browsers, or apps where the account might still be authorized. Do not uninstall the app, clear its data, or close the last session until you know how to preserve access.
- Stop at any destructive warning. A button labelled “reset,” “delete,” “start over,” or “create new vault” may restore the ability to sign in while discarding old encrypted content.
If it is an ordinary website or app password
Use the service’s own recovery page or the “forgot password” control in its official app. Enter the account identifier requested by the service and complete the verification method already attached to the account. Depending on the provider, that may involve an email address, phone number, authenticator, backup code, or another approved device. The exact choices are account-specific, so do not substitute a method from a different service.
After the reset, sign in through the official app or a manually entered address, review recent sessions and security alerts, and remove devices you no longer recognize. Create a new password that is unique to that service. A new password that is merely a small variation of the lost one is a poor choice because anyone who obtained the old phrase may guess the variation. Enable multifactor authentication if the service offers it, and store its backup or recovery material in a protected location.
If the recovery email or phone is no longer available, follow the service’s account-ownership process rather than paying a third party that promises to bypass it. Never send a password, one-time code, or recovery phrase to an unsolicited “support” contact.

If it is a password-manager master password
A master password can be fundamentally different from an ordinary account password. In an end-to-end encrypted design, it may be part of the key material that decrypts the vault. The provider can verify an account or issue a new login without possessing the secret needed to decrypt the old contents.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains the security consequence plainly: “If the decryption key is lost, it should not be possible to reset it and recover vault data.” Bitwarden’s support documentation gives the same provider-specific outcome: “If none of these options grant you access to your account, there is no way for Bitwarden to recover the account or its data.” Those statements describe the cited services’ security models; they are not a promise that every password manager behaves identically.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Check recovery routes that had to be enabled in advance
Before changing or deleting anything, check the methods supported by your particular manager. Bitwarden documents examples that may also appear, with different names and rules, in other products:
- A still-authorized phone, computer, browser extension, or app. Confirm that it is the correct account and region.
- A stored password hint.
- A recovery key or recovery phrase.
- An emergency contact who was configured to request or approve access.
- An organization administrator with a documented recovery role.
- Approval from a known device.
- A registered encryption-enabled passkey.
Do not assume that a recovery phrase is the master password, or that one manager’s emergency-contact feature exists in another. Open the provider’s current “forgot master password” guidance and follow its eligibility requirements exactly.

Regaining the ability to sign in and recovering the old encrypted vault are separate outcomes. A service may let you create a new account or new vault after a reset while leaving the old encrypted data inaccessible. NordPass, for example, says its full reset after losing both the master password and recovery code deletes vault items. Read the final confirmation screen and any linked warning before accepting such an operation.
If every documented route fails, assume that the old encrypted data may be unrecoverable. That is the intended protection against a third party obtaining the vault by persuading support to override encryption.
Use a remaining signed-in session carefully
An open session can be your best opportunity to recover account access, but it is also easy to destroy accidentally. Keep the device powered and connected while you read the vendor’s instructions. Do not log out, clear browser storage, remove the extension, or reset the app until you have completed the supported transfer or recovery procedure.

If the service permits an export, treat the result as a high-risk document. Exports may be plain text and unprotected even when the vault itself is encrypted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Export only to a device you control.
- Move the file immediately to an encrypted, access-controlled location.
- Do not leave it in a downloads folder, email attachment, cloud-sharing folder, or shared computer.
- Import the credentials into the intended destination, verify that important entries work, and securely remove unnecessary copies.
- Empty the recycle bin or trash and check automatic backups that may have captured the unprotected file.
Follow the manager’s documented method for changing the master password or transferring a vault. Do not copy secrets into an improvised spreadsheet just because a session is open.
If no password-manager recovery method works
Make a list of accounts that you can still reach and protect them in order of consequence. Start with primary email, financial services, identity or government portals, work accounts, and any service that can reset other accounts. For each one, use its official password-reset process, choose a unique replacement password, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
When a lost manager contained many passwords, reset the accounts in stages rather than trying to change everything at once. Mark each account as reset, protected with MFA, and removed from any unfamiliar session. Do not reuse the lost master password, the old passphrase, or a predictable variation.
If you cannot access an account’s recovery email, phone, or second factor, use that service’s documented ownership process. Keep records of case numbers and dates, but never record full passwords or recovery codes in an unsecured note.

Do not confuse a recovery phrase with a passphrase
A recovery phrase is normally generated by a service for a specific recovery or encryption function. It may have a fixed number of words, a required order, and one-time display rules. A passphrase you invented for sign-in may have none of those properties.
Keeper’s guidance illustrates why handling matters: its phrase is shown during setup, must remain in the exact order, and cannot be retrieved by Keeper if it is lost. The same product recommends keeping a written copy in a secure physical location, such as a locked safe, and warns against unsecured digital copies. Follow your own provider’s instructions rather than assuming those exact rules apply elsewhere.
A written recovery record should contain only the material needed for recovery, be protected from visitors and damage, and be reviewed when you change providers or accounts. A notebook is not a substitute for an ordinary password reset and should never become a list of everyday passwords left in an accessible drawer.
How to choose recovery features before you are locked out
| Decision | Question to answer | Risk to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Which recovery methods exist, and must they be enabled before lockout? | A method discovered after the password is forgotten may be unavailable. |
| Authority | Who can authorize recovery: you, an emergency contact, an administrator, or a device? | More recovery convenience can give another person a path to stored credentials. |
| Data preservation | Does a reset preserve the encrypted vault or create an empty one? | A successful sign-in can still mean permanent loss of old data. |
| Device coverage | Does the method work on your phone, computers, browsers, and organization accounts? | A recovery path limited to one unavailable device may fail when needed. |
| Material protection | How are exports, recovery phrases, and keys protected? | Unencrypted copies can expose every saved credential. |
The NCSC advises understanding who can recover an account and balancing convenience against the possibility of access to stored credentials. Configure at least one supported recovery route, store its material securely, and test the process while you still know the master password. Testing should confirm what happens to the vault, not merely whether a new login screen appears.

You are signed in on one device but cannot find the password
Keep that session open and look for the provider’s documented change, transfer, or recovery workflow. If you export data, secure and delete the unprotected copy as soon as the transfer is verified.
You have a recovery phrase but it is rejected
Check the exact word order, spelling, spaces, and the account or region for which it was created. A recovery phrase for one service is not a universal password. Stop after the provider’s permitted attempts so you do not trigger a lockout.
The app offers to create a new vault
Do not accept until you have decided that losing the old encrypted contents is acceptable. A new vault may be usable while the previous vault remains permanently inaccessible.
The password protects an encrypted file or device
Use the manufacturer’s recovery-key or backup instructions. Reinitializing a drive, deleting a keychain, or restoring factory settings can destroy the only remaining copy of the encrypted data. If no recovery key exists, the encryption design may intentionally prevent a reset that preserves the contents.
Prevent the next lockout
- Use a unique, strong password or passphrase for every important account.
- Enable multifactor authentication and save its recovery codes in a protected location.
- Configure the password manager’s supported recovery method before you need it.
- Store recovery phrases or keys offline or in another protected system, following the provider’s exact instructions and word order.
- Know which devices, contacts, or administrators can authorize recovery.
- Review active sessions and recovery details after changing a password.
- Practice the documented recovery process without deleting the vault or signing out of your last authorized device.
The practical rule is simple: recover an ordinary account through its provider; recover a password-manager vault only through methods that were designed and enabled beforehand; and treat any reset that creates a new vault as potentially destructive.
