If you find a sexual deepfake or other intimate image shared without consent, do not repost or forward it. If safe, record where and when it appeared, report every post to the platform hosting it, and use the appropriate child-protection or law-enforcement channel when the person depicted was under 18, is being threatened, or may be in immediate danger. The right legal route and removal deadline depend on where you are.
First, avoid spreading the material
Do not repost, forward, link to, or comment in a way that directs people to the image or video. Do not send it to friends to ask what to do. Each additional share can expose the person further. Police Scotland advises people not to share someone else’s intimate photos.
If the material depicts someone who was under 18 at the time shown, do not download, save, or circulate it. Use the platform’s child-safety reporting channel and contact the appropriate child-protection authority for your location. In the United States, Federal Trade Commission guidance points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline and Take It Down.
If someone is threatening to publish images, demanding money or other actions, stalking the person, or creating an immediate safety risk, contact local law enforcement or emergency services as appropriate. Do not negotiate or confront the sender if doing so could increase the risk.

Record what happened without distributing the image
When it is safe and lawful, capture the details needed to identify the post and report it. A trusted person can help with documentation or reporting if the person targeted does not want to handle it alone.
- The exact post or page URL, and the platform, app, or site where it appeared.
- The account’s display name, username, or user ID, and the sender’s details if a message or threat was involved.
- The date and time it appeared or was sent; include the time zone if known.
- What was said, sent, or threatened, plus any platform report reference or case number.
RAINN advises preserving evidence if safe; Police.uk and Police Scotland identify links, account details, timing, platform, and relevant messages as useful information. Prioritize recording the post’s location and surrounding context rather than making or sharing another copy of intimate material. Do not access or keep material if local rules prohibit it. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission, for example, warns that accessing, keeping, or sharing intimate images without consent is illegal there except for specified reporting, authority, or court purposes and only as long as necessary. Follow the receiving authority’s secure evidence instructions.

Report each copy to the platform hosting it
Use the post’s report control or the platform’s safety or help form. Choose a category such as non-consensual intimate imagery, sexual deepfake, or image-based abuse if offered. State that the person depicted did not consent to the creation or sharing, if that is what happened, and include the post link and account details. A sexual deepfake can still be non-consensual intimate-image abuse even if it was generated or altered with AI; the FTC includes AI deepfakes in its guidance.

Search results are a separate issue
If a search engine displays a link to the material, report that result through the search engine’s removal process as well as reporting the original post to its host. De-indexing a result from search is not the same as deleting the material from the site hosting it.
Use the reporting route that fits the person’s age
If the person was under 18 in the image or video
Use the host platform’s child-safety reporting route and the relevant child-protection reporting channel in your jurisdiction. In the U.S., FTC guidance identifies NCMEC’s CyberTipline and Take It Down as resources for minors. Do not upload, forward, or download the material to try to report it unless the designated service or authority specifically instructs you through its official process.

If the person was an adult in the image or video
Report the content to each host. An adult who can access their own intimate image may also be eligible to use StopNCII, which creates a digital fingerprint so participating platforms can look for matches without the service receiving the image itself. This is an additional measure, not a universal takedown mechanism: it works only across participating platforms, exact matches work best, and it does not cover most encrypted messaging services. Altered or cropped versions may require a separate fingerprint if the person can access that version.
Understand what removal timelines do—and do not—mean
Removal rules are jurisdiction-specific. Do not assume a deadline or legal remedy stated for one country applies to another.

| Location | What the cited guidance says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| United States | The FTC says platforms covered by the Take It Down Act must provide a way to report intimate images, including deepfakes, and remove covered content and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request. | If a covered platform does not remove the content or has no working reporting route, the FTC says to file a complaint. RAINN notes the FTC generally cannot enforce against platforms hosted outside U.S. jurisdiction and does not provide case-status updates or crisis support. |
| United Kingdom | The UK Government’s Crime and Policing Act 2026 factsheet, updated 30 September 2026, describes platform duties to remove non-consensual intimate images as soon as reasonably practical and no later than 48 hours after a report. | This is UK-specific legal information. The factsheet advises verifying current commencement and application before relying on it in a particular case. |
| Singapore | The Online Safety Commission accepts qualifying reports from people with specified connections to Singapore. Its examples of intimate-image abuse include realistic sexual videos generated using AI or digital tools. | It requests relevant details and supporting links or screenshots where possible. Save evidence before reporting if removal could affect later police or legal action, while following its rules on access and retention. |
| Other locations | The cited sources do not establish one global removal deadline. | Report to the host platform and seek local police, victim-support, or qualified legal guidance where needed. |
In Singapore, people outside the Online Safety Commission’s eligibility conditions are directed to report to the relevant platform. For other locations, check with local authorities or a victim-support organization rather than borrowing another country’s rules.
Get help and protect the person targeted
Seeing intimate abuse material can be distressing, whether it depicts you or someone else. Offer practical support without asking the person to view or resend the material. If you are helping someone, let them decide whether you should document or report it on their behalf, unless an immediate safeguarding concern requires action.
RAINN offers free, confidential, 24/7 sexual-violence support in English and Spanish in the United States. Police Scotland lists the Revenge Porn Helpline and Childline’s Report Remove for people aged 18 or younger in its guidance. These services are jurisdiction-specific examples, not worldwide services.

Police Scotland’s guidance for people who see a harmful deepfake or one intended to look like them recommends reporting it to the platform, saving or screenshotting photos and messages to give to police, not sharing someone else’s intimate photos, and blocking the sender. Apply the evidence advice in light of local law and child-safety rules; never download or circulate material depicting a minor.
