Stop disturbing the find and report it by the route that matches what you have found. If it could be human remains, contact Police Scotland immediately and do not touch it. For a possible portable archaeological object, record its location, photograph it if possible, and report it to the Treasure Trove Unit within one month. If a fixed feature or archaeological remains have been exposed during development, contact the local authority archaeologist immediately.
What should I do if I find something of archaeological significance in Scotland?
- Leave it where it is. Do not dig further, clean, remove or otherwise disturb a suspected object or its setting. Its location and surrounding ground can help establish what it is and where it came from.
- Record the findspot and photograph it, if you can do so without disturbing it. Note the location and take photographs at the site and close up. Archaeology Scotland suggests using a smartphone GPS app if available; this is optional, not a requirement. Documentation does not replace reporting.
- Choose the reporting route below. A portable object, a fixed feature, possible human remains, a wreck, and fossils do not all follow the same route.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) says most suspected portable finds should be reported, even if they seem unassuming. Its Reporting finds guidance says nearly all archaeological finds are subject to Treasure Trove and need not be made of precious metal.
How do I report a portable archaeological object?
Report a suspected portable archaeological object to the Treasure Trove Unit within one month. HES instructs finders to complete the online reporting form and email it to the Unit with images. Follow the live HES Treasure Trove instructions for the form and current contact details.

Scotland’s system is not limited to precious-metal objects. A find does not need to look valuable or remarkable to warrant reporting. Do not take an unreported find out of Scotland: HES says removal requires Treasure Trove permission.

What if I find human remains?
Contact Police Scotland immediately. Do not touch the remains or disturb nearby ground. Historic Environment Scotland’s instruction is: “Do not touch the remains, and avoid disturbing the ground in their vicinity.” Police may consult the planning authority archaeologist if they suspect an ancient burial. This is an urgent police matter, not a Treasure Trove report.
What if I uncover a fixed feature during building or groundworks?
Contact your local authority archaeologist immediately and, if possible, leave exposed artefacts and remains in situ while awaiting advice. A fixed feature—such as a structure or archaeological deposit—is not the same reporting case as a portable object.

The Scottish Government’s Planning Advice Note 2/2011 gives this advice for discoveries during development, but its publication page marks the note as withdrawn. Treat it as planning guidance in that context, not as proof of a current universal stop-work duty. Ask the local authority for current advice about the site and work underway.
Does the find belong to the landowner or finder?
Do not assume that a portable antiquity belongs to you because it was found on your land. HES says portable antiquities that are not otherwise owned and have no demonstrable heir are Crown property; it also says landowners have no property rights to such portable antiquities and finders have no ownership rights to unreported found objects.

This guidance concerns portable antiquities. It should not be read as a blanket statement about ownership of land, buildings, fixed archaeological features or every object found on private property.
What about wrecks, fossils and animal bones?
- Recovered wreck: HES directs wreck reports to the Receiver of Wreck; use its current guidance for that separate process.
- Fossils or unworked animal bones: HES says these are not covered by Treasure Trove and points to the Scottish Fossil Code.
Should I use a metal detector or search nearby?
No. Do not start digging or use detecting equipment as a first response. HES requires consent to use equipment capable of detecting metal within a protected place, such as a scheduled monument. Leave the area undisturbed and seek advice through the appropriate official route.

How can I check what is already known about the location?
After addressing the find and reporting it where appropriate, you can search trove.scot and the local authority’s Historic Environment Record for known sites and records. These resources may provide context, but they are not a substitute for reporting and cannot definitively identify a new find.
