If you still have a recovery phrase, wallet backup, private-key export, or the original device, you may be able to restore access; if every private key and usable backup is permanently gone, there is no way to spend the bitcoin. First identify what you actually found, preserve it safely, and use recovery instructions for that specific wallet. Never give a seed phrase, private key, wallet file, or remote access to someone promising to recover funds.
First, work out what you still have
A Bitcoin wallet does not contain coins like a physical purse. Bitcoin balances are recorded on the blockchain; the wallet manages the keys that authorize spending. The item you found may help recover those keys, but a public address alone cannot. Bitcoin.org explains the distinction in its Bitcoin FAQ.
| What you found | What it may let you do | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery phrase or seed | Restore a deterministic wallet, if the wallet software and settings are compatible. | Identify the wallet and any additional passphrase; follow its official recovery instructions. |
Bitcoin Core wallet.dat |
Restore a Bitcoin Core wallet, subject to its age and backup history. | Preserve a copy and identify the wallet version or approximate creation period. |
| Encrypted wallet or backup file | Potentially restore wallet data if you have the required password and compatible software. | Determine which application created it; its encryption password is not the same thing as a seed phrase. |
| Old phone or computer | It may still contain wallet software, keys, or a backup that can be copied. | Do not wipe, update, or casually connect it to other devices before preserving relevant data. |
| Exported private key | It may authorize spending from the associated address. | Treat it as a secret that grants access; use the wallet’s official guidance for handling it. |
| Only a public address or transaction record | It can help confirm transaction history or whether funds were received. | It cannot recreate the private key or authorize a transaction. |
These artifacts are not interchangeable. A password that unlocks an encrypted file does not replace a missing seed, and a public address does not become spendable because its transaction history is visible.

Secure the wallet material before trying recovery
- Do not disclose secrets. Never send a seed phrase, private key, wallet file, password, or remote-access invitation to someone claiming to be support or a recovery expert. Do not enter a phrase into a site reached through an unsolicited link or QR code.
- Keep the original unchanged. If you have a wallet file or backup, make a protected copy before attempting repair, conversion, or restoration. Keep copies offline in reliable storage where possible; Bitcoin Core documentation advises using reliable, malware-free backup storage.
- Identify the wallet and its era. Record the application name, device, approximate year, filename, file extension, and any instructions kept with the backup. Different wallet generations and backup formats can require different procedures.
- Use the matching official instructions. Do not import an unknown phrase or file into a random wallet app. Bitcoin.org notes that backup requirements vary by wallet, and the Developer Guide warns that HD-wallet compatibility and settings can affect restoration.
- Verify carefully before spending. If access is restored, check the destination address in full before sending. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible; do not pay a stranger or website an alleged unlock fee.
Can a recovery phrase restore the wallet?
Often, if the wallet used a deterministic design and you have the correct phrase and any required additional passphrase. A recovery phrase can regenerate a wallet’s addresses and keys, but compatibility, derivation settings, and wallet-specific behavior matter. Bitcoin.org says modern deterministic wallets may restore past and future addresses from a recovery phrase, while cautioning that backup requirements vary. See its wallet security guidance and the Bitcoin Developer Guide section on HD wallets.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Not every older wallet used a modern seed phrase. Some older “loose-key” wallets stored separate, unrelated keys, so a phrase from another wallet—or no phrase at all—may not apply. A backup made before later keys were generated may also fail to include funds received at those later addresses.
A seed phrase is effectively spend authority: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated bitcoin. Enter it only into wallet software you have independently identified and trust, following that wallet’s official procedure. Never share it with a support representative, recovery service, or online form.

What if the file is Bitcoin Core wallet.dat?
Preserve the file and identify the Bitcoin Core version or period it came from before attempting restoration. Bitcoin Core documents wallet restoration through its graphical interface and RPC tools; the applicable instructions can depend on the version and context. Start with the project’s Bitcoin Core documentation rather than running commands copied from an unknown source.
Wallet age matters. Bitcoin Core documentation distinguishes wallets created before and after version 0.13: older non-HD wallets could require more frequent backups, and a stale backup might not contain keys generated after it was made. HD wallets derive addresses from a seed, but that does not make every backup or restore process interchangeable.

If the file is encrypted, you will need the wallet’s encryption password to unlock it. That password is not a substitute for a missing wallet key or seed, and Bitcoin.org says password-recovery options are very limited.
What if it is an encrypted backup or an old Android wallet?
First identify the software that created the backup. Encryption formats and restore procedures are wallet-specific; instructions for one application’s file should not be applied to another. For the historic Android bitcoin-wallet project, its recovery guide describes that project’s backup formats and password-dependent decryption. It suggests looking for filenames beginning bitcoin-wallet-backup in cloud storage, email, or an SD-card download folder.

That guide is specific to the project and its historical formats. Do not upload the backup to a third party for diagnosis. The guide warns that exported private keys handled on an unsafe computer may be exposed; if decrypted key material is involved, assume an internet-connected or malware-infected device could compromise it.

The device is missing, but a valid backup remains
A missing phone or computer does not necessarily mean the bitcoin is lost. A valid wallet backup or compatible recovery phrase may restore access on another device. Follow instructions for the wallet that created the backup, because restoration requirements vary.

The keys and every usable backup are permanently gone
For a self-custodied wallet, there is no recovery authority that can recreate missing private keys. Bitcoin.org states that “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” The bitcoin remains recorded on the blockchain, but without the keys nobody can authorize spending. See the Bitcoin.org knowledge page.
You have only an address or transaction
A public address can show whether bitcoin was received, but it does not provide signing authority. The blockchain is public and permanent; the private key is what authorizes a spend. An address or transaction record cannot be used to reverse-engineer the missing key.
How to recognize a recovery scam
Bitcoin.org’s Avoid Scams guidance states: “No legitimate support representative will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” Scammers may impersonate wallet or exchange support, ask for remote control of your device, or promise guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee. A promise to recover a wallet without the necessary keys or credentials is not proof that the person can do so.
- Do not share phrases, keys, passwords, backup files, or screen access through a public forum, direct message, support ticket, or diagnostic form.
- Do not install remote-control software at the request of a stranger or pay a supposed unlocking charge.
- Be cautious with hardware wallets: Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices can arrive with an attacker-known seed or modified firmware. It advises buying from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and generating the seed yourself on first use.
Choose the next step by the artifact, not by the promise
The safest recovery route depends on what survived: the artifact type, the wallet’s software and vintage, whether encryption credentials remain, and the exposure risk of the device or person helping. If you cannot identify the wallet or assess a file safely, stop before entering secrets or decrypting it and seek version-specific guidance from the wallet project’s official documentation. A careful pause is safer than handing control of a potentially valuable wallet to an unverified helper.
