Keep your distance, protect yourself, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian promptly. If the Barn Owl is in immediate danger and you can move it safely, place it in a secure, ventilated box or carrier, keep it quiet and away from people and pets, and do not give it food or water unless a qualified professional instructs you to. Record exactly where and when you found it and what happened.
The first decision: leave it, or get help?
A Barn Owl on the ground is not automatically abandoned. The correct response depends on its age, physical condition, species identification, and whether it is currently safe. Do not approach simply to obtain a closer look. Watch from a distance first, keep children and pets away, and call for advice if you cannot confidently assess the bird.
| What you observe | Best immediate action |
|---|---|
| Adult Barn Owl that cannot fly, is trapped, or is visibly injured | Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian promptly. Move it only if it faces immediate danger and you can do so safely. |
| Young Barn Owl on the ground, apparently alert and uninjured | Confirm that it is a Barn Owl and seek species-specific advice. A fit nestling may need to be returned to its actual nest, not taken away. |
| Blood, a dangling or limp limb, eye injury, extensive damage, maggots, foul odor, or obvious illness | Treat these as referral signs. Avoid repeated examination and arrange professional care the same day, or first thing the next morning if that is the local service’s instruction. |
| Bird in a road, beside a predator, in a building, or otherwise at immediate risk | Call for help while keeping people back. If safe to do so, contain the owl in a ventilated box or carrier and transport it as directed. |
| You are unsure what you are seeing | Assume professional advice is needed. Different owl species and ages can require different responses. |
The Barn Owl Trust advises contacting a bird-experienced veterinarian or rehabilitator “that day or first thing the next morning” when an owl is obviously injured or you cannot assess it yourself. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission likewise states, “If you find an injured owl, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator,” in its North Carolina guidance.

How to assess the situation without stressing the owl
Start with distance and time
Stand back and observe for a short period. Note whether the bird is alert, breathing normally, able to stand, and reacting to nearby movement. Do not surround it, shine lights at it, or keep returning to check it. Stress and unnecessary handling can worsen shock and may drive a healthy young bird away from its parents.
Confirm that it is a Barn Owl
Young owls of different species are not interchangeable cases. Barn Owl Trust advice for a grounded young Barn Owl should not be generalized to Tawny Owls or other species. If identification is uncertain, tell the rehabilitator what you observed and send a photograph only if it can be taken without approaching or disturbing the bird.
Adult versus young bird
An adult that should be flying but cannot get airborne needs prompt assessment. A young bird may be at a normal developmental stage, yet a nestling that is weak, cold, injured, or separated from its actual nest also needs expert help. Age is not determined reliably by size alone, so describe feathering, behavior, and flight attempts to the professional you contact.

Signs that require professional care
The following observations are reasons to transfer the owl to an experienced bird veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator, rather than trying home treatment:
- A broken or dislocated limb.
- A wing or leg that is limp, held abnormally, or not being used.
- An injured, closed, swollen, or visibly damaged eye.
- Blood at the beak or ears.
- Extensive soft-tissue damage.
- Maggots or a foul smell from a wound.
- Obvious illness, severe weakness, collapse, or an inability to remain upright.
- An adult that repeatedly attempts to fly but cannot.
This is a referral checklist, not a do-it-yourself diagnosis. Do not probe wounds, straighten limbs, pull at feathers, wash the bird, or give medication. If checking these signs would require picking up a struggling owl, stop and ask a professional to tell you what to do.

How to move a Barn Owl safely when it is in immediate danger
Only attempt a rescue when leaving the bird where it is presents a greater immediate risk and you can work without putting yourself in danger. Traffic, aggressive dogs, fire, flooding, machinery, or an inaccessible building may justify temporary movement. If the owl is in a safe place, wait for professional instructions instead.
- Call first when possible. Tell the rehabilitator or veterinarian where the owl is, what danger it faces, and whether you have a suitable box or carrier. Follow their instructions about capture and transport.
- Prepare the container. Use a sturdy pet carrier or cardboard box with ventilation holes. The container must close securely, have enough room for the owl to sit naturally, and have no gaps through which talons or wings can escape. Put a folded towel on the bottom for traction.
- Protect your hands and face. A lively owl can injure a hand with its feet and talons. The Barn Owl Trust recommends thin leather gloves for a necessary handling attempt; puncture-resistant leather bird-handling gloves can reduce scratches, but gloves do not make an unsafe capture safe. Wear eye protection if available and keep your face away from the bird.
- Control the feet. Approach calmly from behind or above the owl’s back, keeping movements slow. Use the towel to cover the bird and gently control the feet before lifting. Never grab a wing, tail, or neck. If the owl strikes, struggles violently, or you cannot control the talons, stop and wait for a trained rescuer.
- Place it in the container. Set the owl upright on the towel, close the lid or carrier door, and check that ventilation remains open. Do not force a bird through a small opening or hold it longer than necessary.
- Move away and reduce stimulation. Keep the container in a quiet, shaded location away from children, pets, and crowds while you arrange transport.
Handling instructions and the warning about talon injuries are detailed by the Barn Owl Trust.

Keeping the owl until help arrives
Container and bedding
A ventilated cardboard box or secure pet carrier is preferable to an open basket or a cage with wide bars. Line the bottom with a towel that is not looped or frayed. The owl should be able to sit upright without its head or wings touching the sides. Do not add perches, toys, bowls, or loose material that could entangle toes.
Temperature and surroundings
Keep the container at room temperature or slightly warmer, out of direct sun and away from drafts. Avoid both chilling and overheating; do not place the box on a radiator, use a hairdryer, or leave it in a parked vehicle. Covering part of the carrier with a light cloth can reduce visual stress while preserving ventilation.
Noise and transport
Keep voices and light low. In a vehicle, secure the box so it cannot slide or tip, maintain comfortable airflow, and drive gently. Do not open the container during the journey to inspect the bird. The International Owl Center’s injured-owl guidance emphasizes stress reduction, secure transport, and passing clear finder notes to the rehabilitator.

Do not feed or give water while waiting
Do not put food or water in the container and do not syringe fluids into the owl unless a qualified professional specifically directs you. An injured bird can aspirate liquid, and an untrained feeding attempt can cause additional harm or delay treatment. The World Owl Trust gives this general first-aid instruction for injured owls in How to Help Injured Owls.
Barn Owl Trust material about feeding relates to assessment and care of particular young owlets. It is not permission for a finder to improvise a diet, force-feed, or provide fluid treatment. Ask the rehabilitator what, if anything, should be offered and when.
What to record and tell the rehabilitator
Write the details down before you forget them. The location can be important to treatment decisions and eventual release, so use a precise address, landmark, map pin, or GPS coordinates rather than a broad description.
- Exact location where the owl was found.
- Date and approximate time.
- Your name and contact details.
- What happened, such as a collision, entrapment, attack, or roadside discovery.
- Whether the owl is an adult or appears young, and how you identified it as a Barn Owl.
- What you observed without handling: flight attempts, posture, breathing, bleeding, or abnormal use of a wing or leg.
- Any immediate danger that remains at the site.
- Every action already taken, including moving the bird, covering it, or placing it in a container.
Give these notes to the person accepting the owl. Do not release it on your own because the original location, injury, and treatment history may affect where and when it can be returned.
If the Barn Owl is young and grounded
A healthy nestling may belong in its actual nest
Barn Owl Trust guidance says nestling Barn Owls normally remain in the nest until they begin flying. If a young Barn Owl is fit, healthy, and you can identify its actual nest, returning it to that nest may be the appropriate response when it can be done safely and lawfully. “Putting it somewhere nearby” is not the same as returning it to the nest.

When not to return it yourself
Do not attempt a nest return if the nest is inaccessible, the site is dangerous, the bird is injured or unwell, or you are uncertain about the species, age, or condition. Marked differences between the wings, legs, or eyes, weakness, poor alertness, or any injury call for prompt professional assessment. Keep people and pets away while waiting.
Why species-specific advice matters
A grounded owl that is normal for one species may be abnormal for another. Tell the adviser that you believe it is a Barn Owl and describe exactly where it was found. The Barn Owl Trust’s young-Barn-Owl guidance explains the nestling and nest-return decision in species-specific terms.

Wildlife law and rescue arrangements depend on your jurisdiction. Do not assume that advice from another country or state applies where you live.
United States example: North Carolina
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission describes Barn Owls and other birds of prey as protected by federal and state law in North Carolina and directs finders of injured owls to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Follow the Commission’s current instructions and use a rehabilitator authorized for birds of prey.

Everywhere else
Contact your local wildlife agency, animal-control service, or licensed rehabilitator for the rules in your area. Ask whether the person collecting the owl is licensed, whether transport permits are needed, and where the bird should be taken. The legal examples above are jurisdictional guidance, not universal law.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Trying to diagnose the owl yourself: limit observation and let a bird professional assess it.
- Offering water in a dish: remove it and ask for professional instructions; a stressed owl may spill it or aspirate it.
- Feeding meat or other food: do not feed while awaiting help unless directed by a qualified professional.
- Using an open box or wire cage: switch to a secure, ventilated container with a towel floor.
- Repeatedly opening the carrier: keep it closed, quiet, and shaded until handoff.
- Allowing children, pets, or a crowd to gather: clear the area and reduce noise and light.
- Releasing an adult that cannot fly: an inability to fly is a reason for professional assessment, even if no wound is obvious.
- Returning a young bird to a random branch: obtain species-specific advice and identify the actual nest before any lawful, safe return.
At handoff and after the rescue
Tell the rehabilitator the exact location, circumstances, observations, and containment time. Mention any collision, predator contact, possible toxin exposure, or road hazard, even if the owl appears quiet. Leave the bird in the container unless the professional asks you to remove it. Ask where to direct follow-up questions; do not attempt to track, feed, or release the owl without authorization.
The safest overall approach is simple: minimize handling, provide a dark and ventilated temporary container only when necessary, keep the owl calm, and get qualified help promptly. A healthy young Barn Owl may need its actual nest, while an injured adult or uncertain case needs a licensed rehabilitator or bird-experienced veterinarian.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get help if a Barn Owl is sitting on the ground?
Yes if it is an adult that cannot fly, visibly injured, in danger, or you cannot assess it confidently. A healthy young Barn Owl may need species-specific nest advice, so contact a qualified rehabilitator before moving it.
What should I do with the owl until I can get it to a rehabilitator?
Place it only if necessary in a secure, ventilated box or carrier lined with a towel. Keep it quiet, at room temperature or slightly warmer, away from children and pets, and do not give food or water unless a qualified professional tells you to.
Can I return a grounded young Barn Owl to a nest?
The Barn Owl Trust says a fit, healthy nestling should be returned to its actual nest when this can be done safely and lawfully. Do not attempt it if the bird is injured, the nest is inaccessible, or you are uncertain; seek professional advice.
