Keep well back and contact the wildlife authority responsible for the area. Do not approach, touch, chase, corner, feed, treat, capture, or move the orangutan. Give responders its location and what you can see from a safe place; take a photo or video only if you can do so without moving closer.
Your role is to report the sighting and observe safely—not to decide whether the animal needs rescuing or to provide care yourself. The right contact depends on where you are: Indonesia’s listed rescue contacts are regional, and Malaysia’s PERHILITAN hotline applies to Peninsular Malaysia, not automatically to Sabah or Sarawak.
What to do first
- Stop at a safe distance. Do not approach to check for wounds or try to steer the animal. Avoid blocking its route or attracting a crowd.
- Keep people and pets back without going closer. If the orangutan is near people, pets, traffic, fire, or another immediate hazard, tell the dispatcher. Do not put yourself between the animal and a hazard.
- Contact the authority for the place where you saw it. Report the location, time, and what you observed, including whether the animal appears injured or trapped.
- Leave intervention to trained responders. Do not feed, handle, restrain, treat, or transport the orangutan. Photograph or record it only from where you already are, and only if doing so is safe.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry advises the public to keep their distance, avoid disturbing or feeding wildlife, and report sightings to BKSDA or local forestry officials. Its 17 September 2026 rescue notice also says documentation should be made only when safe and that the public should leave handling to officials (Ministry of Forestry guidance).

A separate ministry notice about a weak orangutan found in an area affected by fire states: “Masyarakat diminta menjaga jarak, tidak mengganggu atau memberi makan satwa, serta segera melaporkan keberadaannya kepada BKSDA atau petugas kehutanan setempat.” A translation is: “The public is asked to keep their distance, not disturb or feed the animal, and immediately report its presence to BKSDA or local forestry officials.” The translation is provided here for readers; the ministry’s published English rendering was not available in the source result.

Who to contact depends on where you are
There is no single hotline covering every orangutan-range location. Use the authority responsible for the place where the animal is, rather than assuming that a number listed for another province or country will dispatch help. If you do not know which office has jurisdiction, contact a local government or emergency service and ask to be directed to the responsible wildlife authority.
Indonesia
Contact the local Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) office or a local forestry official. For Kalimantan, the Ministry of Forestry’s notice dated 17 September 2026 lists these rescue call-center numbers:

These contacts are specific to the areas named, not a universal Indonesian wildlife hotline. Emergency numbers can change, so check the Ministry of Forestry’s current notice or contact the local BKSDA or forestry office if a number does not connect. Do not delay reporting an urgent hazard while searching for a perfect contact: use the relevant local wildlife, forestry, park, or emergency authority.

When calling, state which area you are in and give the nearest identifiable place. If a number does not connect, try the local BKSDA or forestry office or another appropriate local authority; do not treat one failed call as confirmation that no response is available. No response-time guarantee is stated in the ministry’s published notice, so report promptly and follow any instructions the responsible officials give you.
Peninsular Malaysia
Malaysia’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) lists 1-800-88-5151 on its official contact page. The page gives hours of Monday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but another official hotline page gives different hours. Check PERHILITAN’s current contact information rather than relying on a presumed schedule. This number is for Peninsular Malaysia; it does not establish the right contact for Sabah or Sarawak.

In particular, do not assume that the Peninsular Malaysia hotline covers an encounter in Sabah or Sarawak. Contact the relevant local wildlife or forestry authority there, or ask a local government or emergency service to direct you to the correct agency. No current Sabah or Sarawak hotline is verified here.
Other locations
Contact the local wildlife authority, forestry department, park authority, or emergency service as appropriate. The contacts above do not cover every place where orangutans may be encountered. If you are unsure which agency has jurisdiction, tell the local emergency or government service that you have found a wild orangutan and ask to be directed to the responsible wildlife authority.
What information to give the dispatcher
A precise location is more useful than a close-up image. Share the nearest road, village, plantation, park entrance, landmark, or map location you can provide safely. Then describe what you observed rather than guessing at a diagnosis. For example, say that the animal appears weak, is not moving normally, or seems trapped if that is what you can see; do not claim to know the cause or severity of an injury.
- Where and when you saw the animal.
- Whether it appears injured, weak, trapped, or unable to move normally.
- Whether it is near people, pets, traffic, fire, or another immediate hazard.
- Whether it has moved since you first saw it, if you can report that without following it.
If you can take a photo or video from your existing safe position, it may help responders understand the situation. Do not move closer, follow the animal, use a flash, or delay calling in order to get a better image. The ministry’s guidance is to document only when safe and leave the rescue itself to officials.
It is fine to say that you are uncertain. A report that clearly separates what you saw from what you suspect is more useful than an attempted diagnosis. If the animal moves out of sight, tell responders where it was last seen and when. Do not follow it to keep it in view, and do not ask someone else to approach for a better look.

Why you should not attempt a rescue
An injured or displaced orangutan may be frightened and unpredictable, and it is a powerful wild ape. Trying to approach, corner, handle, or transport it can put you and the animal at risk, interfere with its movement, or complicate a professional response. Do not try to assess wounds at close range or give food, water, or medicine.

Feeding or giving medicine is not a safe substitute for assessment, and attempting to move it is not the same as getting it to proper care. The ministry’s instruction is to report the animal and leave handling to officials, not to carry out a rescue independently.
Rescue and follow-up care require trained responders. In a Ketapang rescue described by Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, agency and partner teams carried out the evacuation and arranged veterinary observation and later transfer to rehabilitation care. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation describes veterinary assessment and quarantine as part of its rehabilitation process. Those are responder-led steps, not tasks for a bystander.
This distinction matters even after responders are on their way: your useful contribution is to stay available to give the location and observations, while keeping yourself and others back. Do not attempt to secure the animal, provide treatment, or transport it to a clinic or rehabilitation centre. The sources describe coordinated agency and partner work, not a public self-rescue procedure or a rescue organization that can replace the local authority.
Keep your distance without relying on a fixed number
There is no safe universal distance to apply to every unexpected encounter. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s visitor guidance sets a minimum 10-metre distance and prohibits contact in its managed settings, but that rule is specific to those settings; it is not a guarantee that 10 metres is sufficient around a displaced or injured orangutan. Stay well back, do not close the gap for a photograph, and follow instructions from local responders.

Think of “keep your distance” as a reason not to approach, rather than as a measurement that makes contact safe once you reach it. Avoid blocking the animal’s route or drawing a crowd. If other people are present, ask them to stay back only if you can do so without approaching the orangutan or putting yourself in its path. Tell the dispatcher if people, pets, traffic, fire, or another hazard is nearby, so responders know what you observed.
What happens after you report it?
Response and care are handled by the responsible agencies and trained teams. The ministry’s account of the Ketapang rescue describes an evacuation by agency and partner teams, followed by veterinary observation and a later transfer to rehabilitation care. BOS Foundation describes veterinary assessment and quarantine as steps in its rehabilitation process. These examples help explain why the public should leave care to responders; they do not promise that every case will follow the same sequence or timeline.
After making a report, follow the dispatcher’s instructions. If you are asked for clarification, provide only what you can safely observe. Do not infer that the animal has been abandoned or that it needs to be moved just because it is alone, injured-looking, or outside a forested setting. No public test for deciding when an orangutan is “displaced” is stated here; report the circumstances and let the relevant authority assess them.

Can I rescue or transport the orangutan myself?
No. Do not catch, restrain, handle, treat, or transport it. The government’s rescue account describes evacuation and veterinary follow-up by agency and partner teams; bystanders should report and leave intervention to them.
