Keep your distance and leave the nest undisturbed. Do not poke, dig, spray, block its entrance, or try to move it. The detailed practical guidance available here is for bumblebee nests: if one is not creating a specific hazard, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust generally recommends leaving it in place. If the nest is inside a building or creates a genuine safety concern, ask a qualified local expert to assess it rather than handling it yourself.
“Wild bee nest” can mean different things: bumblebees, solitary bees and feral honeybee colonies do not all nest in the same way. The first safe step is the same in any uncertain case: move away, avoid disturbing the site and get locally appropriate advice if its location is a concern.
What to do first
- Stop and observe from a distance. Do not approach closely to inspect the nest or its entrance. If people or pets are nearby, calmly move them away. You do not need to identify the nest at close range before making the area safer.
- Do not disturb or obstruct it. Avoid poking, digging, spraying, covering the entrance, or causing noise and vibration close to the nest. These actions can damage it or provoke defensive behavior. In particular, do not seal an opening just because bees are flying through it: it may be the nest’s access route.
- Work out what kind of situation you may have. The detailed nest advice in this article is about bumblebees. Solitary bees and honeybees nest differently, so do not assume the same guidance applies to every bee nest. If the type is unclear and the location is concerning, seek local expert advice rather than trying to identify it at close range.
- Assess the actual exposure. A nest away from regular activity may need no intervention. A nest beside a doorway, play area, or building opening—or one that creates a specific sting-safety concern—may warrant advice from a qualified local service. The location and the likelihood of people encountering the nest matter as well as the fact that a nest is present.
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust says, “If you find a bumblebee nest, consider yourself very lucky!” It also says, “we generally recommend that nests are left alone and in place.” That recommendation is specifically about bumblebee nests, not every kind of bee colony. It is not a direction to ignore a genuine safety issue; rather, it means not treating every nest as something that needs to be removed.

Why leaving a bumblebee nest alone is often the best option
Bumblebee nests are seasonal. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust says they usually last two to six months. That is the typical duration of a bumblebee nest, not a prediction for all bee activity or other kinds of colonies. If the nest is not creating a specific hazard, avoiding unnecessary disturbance is often the simplest way to share the space while the colony completes its season.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That time frame can help put an inconvenience in perspective, but it is not a reason to take risks or a guarantee that every nest will be gone on a particular date. If a nest is near routine activity, first consider whether people can use another route or move nearby seating or play equipment for the time being. If there is a genuine concern that cannot be managed that way, ask a local expert to assess the situation.
Bees also matter beyond the immediate garden. The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs’ 2016 Bees’ Needs page reports that 1,500 insect species pollinate plants in the UK, including 25 bumblebee species and 260 solitary bee species. It gives an estimated £600 million value for insect pollination to crops through increased yield and quality of seeds and fruit. These are figures from a UK government page published in 2016, not current global estimates. They provide context for why avoiding unnecessary harm to pollinators matters, but they are not a reason to approach or handle a nest.
How to keep people and pets at a comfortable distance
If the nest is a bumblebee nest and the concern is nearby activity rather than an urgent hazard, small temporary changes may be enough. The aim is to reduce accidental contact while leaving the nest and its access undisturbed. Start with the least intrusive option: change how people use the area rather than trying to change the nest.
- Put a temporary barrier or portable fence between children or pets and the nest entrance. Set it up without approaching or blocking the entrance, and ensure bees can continue to fly in and out.
- Move seating, play equipment, or other regularly used items farther from the nest. If a different place to sit or play is available, relocating that activity can reduce repeated close encounters without touching the nest.
- Use fine netting over window openings if bees are entering through an open window. The netting is for the window, not for covering the nest or closing its entrance.
- Avoid noisy work and vibration close to the nest where possible. Do not carry out work around it simply to get a closer look or alter the site.
A barrier is only useful if it keeps people away without restricting the bees’ route. If installing one would require going close to the nest, skip it and ask a local expert for advice. A temporary garden barrier is an optional practical measure for an access concern; the Trust does not endorse a particular product, and no special removal equipment or pesticide is recommended here.
These measures are not a guarantee that there will be no bee encounters. They are examples of ways to reduce contact while leaving a bumblebee nest alone. If you cannot separate people from the nest entrance without going close to it, do not improvise a more intrusive solution. Keep clear and seek advice about the particular location.

What to do if you accidentally disturb a bumblebee nest
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s advice is specific to bumblebee nests: gently replace material that covered the nest, or gently prop something over the top to shelter it from the weather, then leave the area so the bees can repair the damage. Do not keep checking, rearranging the cover, or attempt this if doing so would put you close to the nest or create a safety risk. For a nest you believe is not a bumblebee nest, this guidance should not be assumed to apply; contact a local specialist for direction.
The important part is to avoid turning an accidental disturbance into repeated interference. Do not try to improve, excavate or relocate the nest while replacing its cover. If you are uncertain what was disturbed, or cannot make the simple sheltering step without approaching the nest, leave it alone and get local advice.
When to ask for professional help
Seek local expert advice if a nest is inside a building, beside a high-traffic area, or presents a specific safety concern. The right contact and any rules about handling nests depend on where you live; a local authority may be able to direct you to relevant wildlife or beekeeping services. If you contact a service, explain where the nest is and why the location is a concern. Do not approach it to collect details that are not safely visible from a distance.
Honeybee colonies are different from bumblebee nests. For a feral honeybee nest, UK Health and Safety Executive guidance advises members of the public to consider contacting a professional pest controller or beekeeper rather than trying to deal with it themselves. That is UK guidance, not a universal referral route. Check local services and requirements in your jurisdiction before arranging help. A local authority may also be able to point you toward relevant local beekeeping or wildlife services.
Not every professional service will be available in every place, and this guidance does not verify the qualifications or availability of a particular provider. Use locally relevant sources to confirm who can assess the nest and what options are appropriate for the type of bee and location. Do not treat a general referral to a beekeeper or pest controller as permission to attempt removal yourself.

Why you should not try to move or remove the nest yourself
Moving a nest requires close contact and can damage it or increase the chance of defensive behavior. The available detailed recommendations do not support a do-it-yourself removal method or the use of pesticides. Do not seal an entrance, dig up the nest, or use a removal tool. If relocation or removal seems necessary because of the nest’s location, have a qualified local expert assess the situation and explain the available options for that bee type and jurisdiction.

It is also important not to assume that all nests can or should be moved in the same way. The guidance to leave a bumblebee nest in place when it poses no specific hazard is not a removal procedure. Likewise, the UK advice to consider professional help for a feral honeybee nest does not establish a universal method or legal requirement. A specialist can assess the particular case; local rules and service options need to be checked where you live.
Choose a response based on the bee and the location
There are two useful questions to consider before deciding what to do: what kind of nest might it be, and how exposed is it to people or pets? This is not a complete identification key, and it is not necessary to get close to answer either question. Use the distinctions below to choose between leaving the area undisturbed and seeking local assessment.
| Situation | Practical response | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bumblebee nest away from regular activity | Leave it undisturbed and observe from a distance. | The Trust says bumblebee nests usually last two to six months; this duration does not apply to all bee activity. |
| Bumblebee nest near children, pets, seating, or play equipment | Reduce access with distance, moved equipment, or a temporary barrier that does not block the entrance. | Only install a barrier if it can be done without approaching the nest. |
| Nest inside a building, near a busy route, or causing a specific safety concern | Ask a qualified local expert or local authority for advice. | Available services and rules vary by location. |
| Feral honeybee nest | In the UK, consider a professional pest controller or beekeeper rather than attempting to handle it yourself. | This referral advice is from the UK Health and Safety Executive and should not be treated as universal. |
| Bee type uncertain | Keep away and seek local expert advice if the location makes the nest a concern. | The advice here is not a complete identification guide. |
| Solitary bee nest | Do not assume bumblebee-specific advice applies; leave it undisturbed while you seek local advice if needed. | Solitary bees have different nesting habits; the sources here do not provide a full set of handling or identification instructions. |
Local rules and services vary
This guidance does not establish a universal legal rule for protecting, moving, or removing a nest. The detailed practical advice here concerns bumblebees, and the cited honeybee referral guidance is UK-specific. Contact your local authority or a qualified local wildlife or beekeeping service to confirm what applies where you live. Do not assume that an authority, beekeeper or pest controller in one country will offer the same service or follow the same rules in another.
No country is specified for this advice, so it cannot provide a universal emergency contact, a guaranteed relocation service, or a single legal answer. If you are dealing with a nest in a building or an area people must regularly use, describe the situation to a local source that can advise on local requirements. Until then, keep people away as practicable and do not disturb the nest.

What should I do about a feral honeybee nest?
Honeybee colonies differ from bumblebee nests. UK Health and Safety Executive guidance advises members of the public to consider a professional pest controller or beekeeper rather than handling a feral honeybee nest themselves. That referral is UK-specific; check locally available services and requirements where you live.
Does the same advice apply to solitary bees?
Not in every detail. Solitary bees have different nesting habits, and the practical advice here is specifically about bumblebee nests. Avoid disturbing an uncertain nest and seek local advice if its location is a concern.
Can I put a barrier around a nest to keep children or pets away?
For a bumblebee nest, a temporary barrier or portable fence can help keep children or pets away from the entrance, provided it can be installed without approaching the nest and does not block bee access. If those conditions cannot be met, do not install it; move activities farther away and seek advice if needed.
The Bottom Line
Keep clear, do not disturb or block the nest, and do not try to move it yourself. If it is a bumblebee nest without a specific hazard, leaving it in place is generally the Trust’s recommendation; use distance and temporary adjustments to reduce contact. For a nest in a building, a high-traffic location, or any situation that raises a real safety concern, ask a qualified local expert or local authority what applies where you live.
