Keep children and pets out of the area, give the animal space, and do not try to grab or corner it. What to do next depends on whether it is a bat, whether it appears injured or distressed, whether it may be a baby, and whether a person or pet could have touched it. If it is injured, weak, unable to leave, or possibly involved in contact with a person, call the appropriate local wildlife or public-health authority for instructions.

Start with distance and a quick safety check

Move people and pets away from the room or area. Avoid unnecessary contact, chasing, or blocking the animal into a corner. Observe from a safe distance and try to identify the animal only if you can do so without approaching it. A small mammal indoors may be a one-time visitor, a young animal whose parent is nearby, or an animal that needs professional care; appearance alone may not settle which it is.

Before deciding what to do, note four things: whether the animal is a bat, whether it appears injured or weak, whether anyone may have touched it, and whether it seems to be a young animal. Also note where it is and whether this is a one-off sighting or a repeated entry. These details help a wildlife rehabilitator, animal-control service, wildlife agency, or public-health authority give you relevant instructions.

  • Injured, weak, unusually exposed, or distressed: Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife agency. Animal control or a wildlife veterinarian may be able to direct you to a rehabilitator.
  • Possibly a bat, with possible human contact: Seek local public-health advice before releasing it. A person who was asleep or unable to report contact may not know whether contact occurred.
  • Apparently healthy baby or juvenile: Do not assume it has been abandoned. Species and age matter, and the parent may be nearby.
  • Healthy bat flying in a room, with no known contact: A calm, passive exit may be appropriate under local guidance; do not chase it.

These are general decision points, not a universal wildlife protocol. The guidance cited here comes from California, federal U.S., and Florida authorities, plus a humane-society veterinary handbook. Local law, authorized responders, and health instructions differ by location.

When to call for help

Get local professional advice if the animal has an obvious injury, looks weak or in poor condition, is in distress, cannot leave, or is in a situation where people or pets cannot be kept safely away. Keep the area separated while you make the call. Describe the animal’s apparent species or size, its condition, its location, and whether contact may have occurred. If you cannot identify it safely, say so rather than trying to handle it to get a better look.

Possible contacts include a licensed or local wildlife rehabilitator, a state or regional wildlife agency, animal control, or a wildlife veterinarian. The appropriate route varies by jurisdiction. If the animal is a bat and a person may have been exposed, contact public-health authorities as well; wildlife advice does not replace local health instructions.

If the animal is a bat

Possible contact changes the response

Do not touch a bat with bare hands. If anyone may have been bitten or otherwise had contact, contact local public-health authorities promptly and follow their directions before releasing the bat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises calling the state health department immediately when a bite is known or suspected and keeping the bat contained while following the authority’s instructions about testing and medical care. If someone was sleeping, very young, or otherwise unable to report contact, tell the health authority that when asking what to do. The exact exposure protocol is location-specific.

A bat is flying in a room and no contact is known

Keep people and pets out of the room and avoid trying to swat, chase, or catch the bat while it is flying. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends opening an exterior exit and turning off indoor lights so the bat can leave; it specifically cautions against waving a broom or chasing it. California’s wildlife guidance also describes turning off lights and opening the nearest door or window for a healthy bat that can fly out.

There is a difference in light advice among agencies: Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends turning lights on so a person can see the bat and says bats are not blind or afraid of light. Because these instructions are not identical, check local wildlife or public-health advice and follow it rather than treating one lighting approach as universal. The shared practical point is to keep people and pets away and avoid pursuing the animal.

If the bat cannot find its way out

Do not improvise a capture if contact may have occurred; public-health officials may need the bat retained for testing, and their instructions take priority. California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife describes a conditional approach for a healthy bat that cannot find its way out: wait until it stops flying, then use gloves and a towel to place it in a covered, ventilated container, put the container outdoors in an elevated place, and release it at dusk or night. This is California guidance, not a direction to capture or release every bat. Ask local authorities first, especially if there is any possibility of contact.

The federal wildlife service’s catch-and-release advice says to check the weather and recommends conditions above 50°F without precipitation or high winds. That threshold belongs to that agency’s guidance and should not be treated as a universal release rule. Local instructions and any public-health need to retain the bat take precedence.

If the animal looks like a baby

A small size does not prove that a young animal has been abandoned. Some mothers leave young hidden while they feed, and a well-meaning rescue can separate a healthy baby from its parent. Keep children and pets away, avoid moving the animal unless local guidance calls for it, and seek species-specific advice if you are unsure. The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association’s handbook frames the initial assessment around whether the young animal is hurt or sick, whether a nest or den can be found, and whether the parent retrieves it. Its older flowchart includes a 24-hour observation interval, but that interval should not be used as a universal rule: species, condition, and circumstances differ.

Fawns

California’s wildlife agency advises that a healthy fawn may be left hidden while its mother feeds nearby. Stay away and keep children and pets away. If a fawn has already been moved, California guidance says it can be returned to its original hiding spot and that the doe will not abandon it simply because a person touched it. If it has an obvious injury, poor condition, or signs of distress, contact a rehabilitator or the regional wildlife office instead of relying on a general wait-and-see approach.

Rabbits and hares

Age and condition matter. California distinguishes blind, helpless cottontail nestlings, which stay in shallow nests, from fully furred, open-eyed juvenile rabbits and young hares. Its guidance says a healthy nestling rabbit may be returned to its nest, while a healthy fully furred juvenile rabbit or young hare should be left alone. A rabbit in distress needs a rehabilitator. These are California species notes; if you are uncertain about the animal or the right action, ask a local wildlife professional before moving it.

Squirrels

California’s guidance describes returning a healthy baby squirrel to its nest or, where appropriate, a branch or burrow so its mother can reunite with it. A mother may try to retrieve her young, so avoid taking a healthy baby away simply because it is by itself. If it is injured, weak, or distressed, contact a rehabilitator. The agency’s phrase for healthy juvenile squirrels and healthy outdoor bats is “Leave it there, if you care!”—a reminder limited to those contexts, not a rule for every animal found indoors.

When the animal is injured, weak, or trapped

Signs such as an obvious wound, marked weakness, poor body condition, distress, or inability to leave call for professional guidance rather than an attempt to nurse or relocate the animal yourself. Keep the animal’s area quiet and separated from children and pets while arranging help. Avoid feeding it, handling it, or moving it just to make it easier to reach unless a qualified local responder instructs you to do so; the cited guidance supports contacting a rehabilitator or agency, not a one-size-fits-all home treatment.

When you call, give a concise account of what you observed and what has happened so far. Mention any possible contact with a person or pet, especially for a bat. Ask whether the animal should remain where it is, whether a responder can attend, and what—if anything—you should do while waiting. Follow that local direction rather than advice intended for another species or region.

If bats keep entering the building

A single bat indoors does not by itself mean a colony is forming; Florida’s wildlife agency makes that distinction. Repeated entries or signs of a colony call for a building-level response rather than repeated attempts to catch individual bats. Do not seal a suspected opening until you have confirmed that animals have safely exited. Bats may use small gaps: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes that a bat may fit through a crevice as small as a quarter. That observation is useful for understanding how entry can occur, but it is not a universal measurement for every species or structure.

Florida’s agency describes colony exclusion as a sequence: identify potential entry and exit points, install one-way devices so bats can leave without re-entering, and then permanently seal potential entry points. Before exclusion, check with the relevant state or local wildlife authority about applicable protections, permits, and timing. The federal wildlife service warns that legal protections may apply and advises consulting state wildlife authorities before excluding a colony. It also cautions against surprising hibernating bats with a winter eviction. Species, season, and local rules matter, so a qualified local professional may be appropriate for a recurring problem.

Which response fits the situation?

Situation First response Important qualification
Healthy bat flying in a room; no known contact Keep people and pets out, provide a passive exterior exit, and avoid chasing. California and federal U.S. advice favors turning lights off; Florida advises turning them on for visibility. Check local instructions.
Bat and possible contact with a person Contact public-health authorities before releasing it. Follow local directions on containment, testing, and medical care.
Apparently healthy baby mammal Keep distance and do not assume abandonment; seek species-specific advice if needed. Recommendations differ among fawns, rabbits, squirrels, and other species.
Injured, weak, or distressed mammal Contact a wildlife rehabilitator or appropriate local agency. Do not substitute a home treatment or generic observation interval for local guidance.
Repeated bat entry or suspected colony Consult wildlife authorities before exclusion or sealing openings. Rules, permits, timing, and safe exclusion methods vary by jurisdiction.

What not to do

  • Do not let children or pets approach the animal.
  • Do not grab, corner, chase, or swat at a bat in flight.
  • Do not release a bat when a person may have had contact until public-health authorities have advised you.
  • Do not assume a young animal is orphaned because it is alone.
  • Do not seal suspected bat entry points before confirming animals have safely exited and checking applicable local rules.
  • Do not apply a local agency’s species or release instructions as if they were universal.
