Stay away, do not touch or move the object, and notify the law-enforcement authority for the place where you found it. If it appears connected to a transport crash or another active emergency, alert emergency responders instead. Only trained responders with appropriate equipment should approach or examine a suspected radioactive source.
Immediate actions: distance, no contact, notification
Treat an unfamiliar object as potentially hazardous when there is any reason to suspect radioactive material. You do not need to prove what it is before taking protective action. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) tells members of the public to stay away from a hazardous material, device, or suspicious package and immediately notify the law-enforcement authority for the relevant jurisdiction. The agency also says that only trained responders with proper equipment should approach, retrieve, or examine such an object.
- Stop where you are and create distance without touching anything. Do not pick up the object, carry it, open it, shake it, turn it over, cover it, dismantle it, or place it in another container.
- Keep other people away only if you can do so without moving closer. Use a calm warning from a safe position or ask someone else to alert people nearby. Do not stand next to the object to guard it.
- Call the appropriate local authority. For a suspected source, device, or suspicious package, contact the law-enforcement authority for the jurisdiction where it was found. If the object is part of a vehicle, cargo, rail, aircraft, or other transport accident, contact emergency responders immediately.
- Give the dispatcher the location and a description from where you are. Explain why you suspect a radiation hazard and whether anyone may have touched it or been nearby. Do not return to obtain a closer look or a photograph.
- Follow instructions from police, fire, public-health, or radiation-safety officials. They will decide whether an area should be isolated, whether people should move farther away, and which specialist team should respond.
There is no universal public distance in metres and no consumer detector reading that makes it safe to approach a found object. The safe decision is to let trained responders make those assessments.
Why appearance and ordinary senses cannot establish safety
Radiation cannot be seen, smelled, felt, or tasted, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An object that looks ordinary can still require professional handling. Conversely, a strange-looking object is not automatically radioactive. Appearance is therefore not a test in either direction.

A radiation trefoil symbol may be present on a source, package, vehicle, or piece of equipment, but it may also be missing, damaged, hidden, or unreadable. The NRC specifically warns that the absence of a symbol does not establish that an object is safe. Do not move closer to search for a label, serial number, gauge, capsule, or other identifying feature.
Radiation exposure and contamination are also different. Exposure means energy from a source reaches the body; contamination means radioactive material is on a person, clothing, object, or surface and can spread. You cannot determine which situation exists by looking at the item or by relying on how you feel.
Choose the reporting route by incident type
The correct contact depends on what you found and where you found it. U.S. federal guidance uses the following distinctions:

Do not assume that one emergency number applies everywhere; use the local emergency channel for your location.

How to keep people safe without approaching
Move away by the route you already know
Back away or leave the area using a path that does not require passing the object. Do not stop beside it to decide whether it is genuine. If you are in a building, leave the immediate vicinity without carrying anything that belongs to the object. If you are in a vehicle, do not load the item into the vehicle or drive it elsewhere.
Warn others from a safe position
If people are walking toward the object, give a clear verbal warning or call for assistance while remaining away. Do not form a cordon by standing near the item, placing your belongings around it, or asking another untrained person to inspect it. Police and emergency personnel can establish a controlled perimeter.
Do not improvise shielding or testing
Do not place the item behind a wall, inside a box, under soil, or in water. Moving it changes the hazard and can spread contamination. A household Geiger counter, phone attachment, camera, magnet, flashlight, or other improvised test cannot replace a trained survey with calibrated equipment. Trying to test the object usually requires getting closer, which defeats the primary safety measure.

Responders need the location, not a close-up image. Returning for photographs, labels, measurements, or a second look adds time near the suspected source and may expose additional people. Tell the dispatcher what you remember from the position where you first noticed it.

What to tell the dispatcher
Provide useful information without re-entering the area:
- The exact address, landmark, road, room, platform, field, or other location.
- Whether the item is indoors, outdoors, in a vehicle, or among cargo or debris.
- A description visible from your current position: approximate shape, size, color, markings, container type, or damage.
- When you noticed it and whether you saw anyone handle it.
- Whether you or anyone else touched, carried, opened, or stood close to it, and for approximately how long.
- Any immediate danger such as fire, smoke, leaking material, injured people, traffic, or a continuing crash.
Be honest about contact. Reporting that someone handled the object does not mean you should go back to retrieve it; it helps officials decide whom to assess and what precautions to take.
If you may have been exposed or contaminated
Possible exposure is a separate health question from safely reporting the object. Once you are away, follow directions from radiation-safety or public-health officials. If they tell you to seek medical care, do so when they say it is safe to travel or enter a facility. Do not approach the object again to determine whether exposure occurred.

Recognize when medical advice is needed
The CDC lists nausea, vomiting, and skin burns among symptoms that may require medical attention after a radiation emergency. These symptoms have many possible causes, so they do not prove that an object caused radiation injury. Report your possible contact and any symptoms to officials or medical staff, and follow their instructions rather than self-diagnosing.

Follow official decontamination directions
If officials advise decontamination after a radiation emergency, CDC general guidance is to remove the outer layer of clothing, wash, and put on clean clothes. Removing the outer layer can remove up to 90% of radioactive material, according to the CDC. This figure applies to decontamination after a radiation emergency; it is not a reason to handle, clean, or transport a found object.
Carry out those steps only when instructed or when they are part of an official emergency response. Do not scrub an unknown object, wash it in a sink, put it in a washing machine, or attempt to clean a vehicle or room before authorities assess the situation. Cleanup can spread material and destroy information responders need.
What not to do, even if the item looks harmless
- Do not touch or move it. A small metal capsule, instrument, tag, or package can still require specialized handling.
- Do not open, dismantle, drill, cut, crush, or test it. Damage can release material or increase exposure.
- Do not transport it. Never put it in a car, backpack, pocket, trash bin, mailbox, or public container.
- Do not rely on a missing warning label. Labels can be absent or unreadable.
- Do not rely on your senses. Radiation has no dependable smell, taste, visible glow, or physical sensation.
- Do not buy protective gear as a substitute for reporting. The public guidance does not support approaching an object with a consumer detector, protective suit, shielding container, or cleanup kit.
- Do not automatically shelter in place. CDC’s “get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned” message applies to particular radiation emergencies such as a wider release. An isolated object find requires following the instructions of local responders.
Special case: a possible transport accident
A crash involving a truck, train, aircraft, ship, or other carrier deserves extra caution because cargo may have shifted, broken open, or become mixed with debris. The CDC says to report transportation accidents involving radiation to emergency responders immediately, stay as far away from the accident site as possible, and not touch any cargo from the transport container.

Where this guidance applies
The NRC and CDC instructions summarized here are U.S. federal public guidance. Their core principles—distance, no contact, and prompt notification—are broadly sensible, but the reporting structure and emergency numbers differ elsewhere. Outside the United States, contact the local police or emergency authority for the jurisdiction where the object is located and follow that authority’s directions.
This advice is for members of the public, not radiation workers, licensed operators, hazmat teams, or other trained responders. Those professionals use specialized procedures, instruments, protective equipment, and legal controls that are not appropriate to improvise at the scene.
The governing principle
You do not need to identify the object, measure it, or decide whether it is truly radioactive. Your job is to prevent additional contact, communicate the location accurately, and let trained responders determine the hazard and control it. When uncertainty remains, distance and a prompt call to the responsible local authority are safer than inspection.
