Leave the mark where it is, do not touch or clean it, photograph it without disturbing the site, record where and when you found it, and contact whoever manages the land. A footprint-shaped impression may be a trace fossil, but its appearance alone does not confirm that it is one. Whether it can be collected depends on the land and local rules, so do not take it unless the responsible authority tells you what is allowed.

What to do first

  1. Stop and leave the feature in place. Do not pry it out, scrape it, brush or wash it, make a cast, or move nearby material. The National Park Service tells visitors who discover a fossil in a national park to leave it where they found it and tell a ranger. Tule Springs National Monument’s procedure is even more direct: “Please do not touch it.” A possible footprint has not yet been assessed, and handling can alter the feature or its context.
  2. Photograph it without making contact. If it is safe to do so, take a close photograph of the impression and a wider photograph that shows the surrounding setting. A scale reference can help convey its size: Badlands National Park suggests ordinary objects such as a dollar bill, water bottle, or hand. Do not put an object on the feature or disturb the ground to position it. If getting a useful image would require touching, climbing on, or moving anything at the site, skip the scale reference.
  3. Record the location and discovery date. Save GPS coordinates or mark the point on a map. If you cannot do either, write a detailed description of how to find the spot, including the area and nearby landmarks. Note the date and a short description of what you saw. Do not add a physical marker where the land manager discourages it.
  4. Contact the authority responsible for the site. Tell a ranger if the find is in a U.S. national park. Elsewhere, contact the land manager or the relevant geological survey, museum, university paleontology department, or heritage authority. Follow that office’s directions about which photographs and location details to send.
  5. Follow any privacy instructions. Tule Springs National Monument asks finders to send photographs to rangers and not to share the location or images publicly or on social media. That is a site-specific procedure, not a universal rule for every discovery. Follow the instructions of the authority managing the place where you found the feature.

If you are in a national park, the National Park Service’s core direction is to photograph the fossil, record its location, leave it where found, and tell a ranger. You do not need to decide whether it is a fossil before reporting a feature that seems unusual.

Why a footprint can be a fossil

A fossil does not have to be a bone, shell, or other preserved body part. The U.S. Geological Survey describes trace fossils as evidence of life recorded in sedimentary rocks and includes footprints as an example. The National Park Service likewise describes fossils as remains or traces of past organisms or biological activity, and includes footprints among fossil types. A footprint can therefore be a trace fossil: evidence of an organism’s activity rather than preserved body material.

That possibility does not identify any particular mark. An indentation or pattern that resembles a footprint remains unverified until someone qualified can assess it. Photos and a precise location help an authority evaluate what you found; they are not a substitute for an assessment. Avoid scraping, cleaning, casting, or removing the feature to try to make it easier to identify.

The setting matters alongside the visible impression: the wider photograph and location help show where the feature lies. This is one reason to document the feature in place instead of removing it for a closer look. A close-up alone may show the shape, but it does not replace a record of the surrounding setting or the exact discovery point.

Who to contact depends on where you are

There is no single reporting office or collection rule that applies everywhere. First work out who manages the land, then contact that authority for instructions. The reporting examples below are specific to the places and circumstances named; use the responsible local office rather than assuming one region’s process applies in another.

Think of the first step as identifying the site context: is it a national park, other public land, private land, or a worksite? Then identify the jurisdiction and responsible manager. Those details affect where you report the find and which local handling or collection rules apply. If you are unsure who manages the land, ask the relevant local authority to direct you to the appropriate office rather than moving the feature while you investigate.

U.S. national park

Tell a park ranger and provide the location and photographs as requested. The National Park Service says fossil collecting in national parks is prohibited except for scientific collection under an approved permit. Do not remove a possible footprint on the assumption that it is permissible to keep.

Utah

The Utah Geological Survey advises that what may be collected depends on the fossil type and land ownership. It encourages people to report finds to the state paleontologist or geological survey. This is Utah-specific guidance, not a rule for other states or countries.

Prince Edward Island

The provincial guidance directs finders to contact the provincial archaeologist, provide the discovery location and date, and leave objects in place unless they are threatened by natural or cultural processes. Follow the provincial authority’s instructions about the particular find and site.

Scotland

The Scottish Fossil Code recommends seeking expert advice and reporting unusual finds to a museum, university, or the British Geological Survey. It also cautions against extracting part of a specimen. That guidance is regional; do not treat it as a general collection rule elsewhere.

Other locations or privately managed land

Start with the land manager, which may be a public agency, park authority, private owner, or heritage body. Ask which local geological, paleontological, or heritage office should assess the find and whether any local law or site rule limits handling or collection. The fact that a feature is on land you can access does not establish that you may remove it.

What to include when reporting the find

Give the authority enough information to understand where the feature is and what you observed, while following any site-specific privacy instructions. A practical report can include:

  • The location, using GPS coordinates or a map point if available; otherwise, a detailed written description.
  • The date you found it.
  • A close photograph and a wider view showing the feature in its setting, if you could take them without disturbing the site.
  • A brief, factual description of what caught your attention. Describe the visible mark rather than claiming it is a confirmed fossil.
  • Any immediate concern that the feature may be damaged by a natural process or human activity, if you observed one.

Keep the report focused on what you saw and where you saw it. You do not need to identify the organism or prove that the mark is a fossil; that assessment belongs with the appropriate authority or expert. If an office asks for additional details or particular photographs, follow its instructions rather than returning to the site or handling the feature to obtain them.

If the feature is exposed during construction or ground disturbance

A public visitor should not assume that a construction protocol applies to them. British Columbia’s example procedure for fossil discoveries during development or industrial activity calls for suspending work and ground disturbance near the find, leaving possible fossils in place, establishing a protective buffer, and reporting through the site supervisor to a qualified paleontologist or fossil office. Its 30-metre buffer is an operational instruction for that stated work context, not a general distance for visitors or other jurisdictions.

If you encounter a possible fossil while working on a site, notify the site supervisor and follow the applicable project and local procedures rather than handling it yourself. The British Columbia workflow is an example from that jurisdiction and work setting; it does not establish the required process for every construction site.

How threats affect what you should do

Keep the feature in place while you seek guidance, and tell the responsible authority if it appears to face an immediate natural or human threat. The Prince Edward Island guidance, for example, says to leave objects in place unless threatened by natural or cultural processes. That regional instruction does not give every finder permission to relocate a feature. Ask the authority responsible for the land what to do in the specific circumstances.

Do not try to protect a feature by covering it, building a barrier, placing a marker, or moving it unless the site authority directs you to do so. The correct response can depend on who manages the land, which jurisdiction applies, and the nature of the threat. If the discovery is part of ongoing ground disturbance, use the worksite reporting route rather than treating a visitor procedure as sufficient.

Can you keep or collect it?

Do not assume you can keep or collect a possible footprint. Rules depend on the land, jurisdiction, and sometimes the fossil type. In national parks, the National Park Service prohibits fossil collecting except scientific collection under an approved permit. Utah’s guidance makes collection dependent on fossil type and land ownership. Other regional guidance cited above gives different reporting and handling directions, which is why a general answer cannot establish what is legal at your site.

Leave the feature in place and ask the land manager or relevant local authority before moving or collecting anything. A mark that is not yet confirmed as a fossil is not a reason to test it by extraction. Even where local rules allow some collection, the authority can explain whether the specific land and find are covered.

Do you need special equipment?

No special purchase is needed to follow the basic guidance. A phone or camera can take the photographs, and a map or GPS capability can help record the location; the official instructions do not call for buying equipment. If you already have an ordinary object that can serve as a scale reference, use it only if you can do so without touching the feature or disturbing the site. A scale reference is optional, not a reason to approach or handle the impression.

Do not bring extraction tools, cleaning supplies, or casting materials to try to reveal or preserve the mark. Those actions conflict with the advice to leave an unassessed feature in place. The useful task is documentation and reporting, not excavation or treatment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Touching it to check its texture: An unverified feature should not be handled, scraped, or cleaned.
  • Taking it home for identification: Removal may damage the feature and may violate rules that apply to the land.
  • Making a cast: Casting involves contact and should not be attempted on an unassessed find.
  • Sharing exact coordinates online: Some sites, including Tule Springs, specifically ask finders not to share location details or photos publicly.
  • Assuming every agency has the same rules: National-park, state, provincial, private-land, and worksite procedures are not interchangeable.
  • Marking the spot physically: Record it on a map or with GPS where possible; do not leave a visible marker where the responsible authority discourages it.

Should I report a possible fossil footprint?

Yes. You do not need to confirm that it is a fossil before reporting an unusual footprint-shaped feature. Tell a ranger in a U.S. national park; elsewhere, contact the land manager or ask a relevant geological survey, museum, university paleontology department, or heritage authority where to report it.

Can I keep a fossil footprint I find?

Do not assume you can collect it. Collection rules depend on the land and jurisdiction, and sometimes on the fossil type. The National Park Service prohibits fossil collecting in national parks except scientific collection under an approved permit. Ask the responsible land manager or local authority before moving or collecting anything.

What if I find one during construction or other ground disturbance?

If you are working at the site, notify the site supervisor and follow the applicable project and local procedure. British Columbia’s example protocol for development or industrial activity calls for stopping nearby ground disturbance, leaving the find in place, establishing a protective buffer, and reporting through the supervisor. Its 30-metre buffer applies to that specific work context, not to visitors generally.

The Bottom Line

Leave a possible fossil footprint in place. Photograph it and record where and when you found it without disturbing the site, then report it to the authority responsible for the land. Do not collect or share its location publicly unless the managing authority says that is appropriate; local rules and instructions determine what happens next.
