If an object might be a fossil egg or eggshell, do not pick it up, clean it, crack it, or move it to get a better look. Photograph it where it lies, record its location and surrounding geology, and contact the land manager and an appropriate museum, geological survey, or paleontology department. In a U.S. national park, notify a ranger. Whether you may collect or keep it depends on the country, land ownership, manager, and fossil type—not on how egg-shaped it looks.
What to do in the first few minutes
Leave the object and its setting undisturbed
Stop before touching the suspected egg, shell fragment, or surrounding sediment. The position of a fossil relative to the rock layer, nearby fragments, and other fossils can be more informative than the object by itself. Moving it can destroy that context and may violate collecting rules.
If you are in a U.S. national park, National Park Service guidance is to leave a fossil where you found it and tell a ranger. The same approach is safest on other public land until the responsible authority gives you instructions.

Photograph without staging the find
Take a clear overall image showing the object in its setting, then close views from several angles. Include a familiar item for scale only if you can do so without moving the find or placing anything on it. A coin, ruler, or your hand can introduce contamination or obscure details, so a separate object beside—not touching—the specimen is preferable.

Use natural light when possible and take additional images that show the surrounding rock, bedding, soil, and any nearby shell fragments. Do not rotate the object, scrape away dirt, pour water on it, or excavate around it to improve a photograph.
Record location and context privately
Write down the date, a general description of the location, and how you reached the site. Record map coordinates with a phone or GPS device if safe and lawful, plus the land manager or property status if known. Note whether the object is embedded in bedrock, lying loose on the surface, partly exposed, or associated with other fragments.
Keep precise coordinates out of public posts. The National Park Service recognizes that detailed location information may need protection from theft, collecting, or site damage. Give exact information directly to the ranger, land manager, or qualified institution.

Who to contact, based on where you found it
The correct first contact is the person or organization responsible for the land. A museum can help assess photographs, but it cannot replace the land manager’s authority over collection or removal.

For a scientific opinion, a local natural-history museum, university paleontology department, or state or provincial geological survey is usually a better destination than a general social-media group. Utah Geological Survey guidance illustrates the general reporting route, but its instructions are jurisdiction-specific and should be checked for current applicability.
Can you keep it?
There is no universal answer. Before moving or keeping the object, determine the country, state or province, land ownership, land manager, and whether the material is a vertebrate fossil or another category regulated by local law.

National parks
National Park Service policy prohibits recreational, commercial, and educational fossil collecting in national parks. Scientific collection requires a park-approved permit. Finding an object does not create a personal right to remove it, even if it appears loose or insignificant.
State and provincial programs
Rules can differ sharply between jurisdictions and between land types. Florida, for example, has a separate program in which certain vertebrate fossils on state lands require a permit and reporting. That example demonstrates why a rule from one state cannot be applied to another state, private land, federal land outside a national park, or another country. Permit fees, deadlines, and reporting procedures can change, so obtain current instructions from the responsible agency.
Private land
Private ownership still does not answer every question. The landowner’s permission may be necessary, and heritage, protected-species, export, or scientific-collection laws may also apply. Ask the landowner and the relevant authority before excavation, transport, sale, or donation.

Could an egg-shaped rock be a fossil egg?
Shape alone is weak evidence. The American Museum of Natural History notes that river-rounded rocks and sedimentary concretions are common fossil-egg lookalikes. Concretions can form as mineral-rich material hardens around a nucleus, producing a smooth oval that resembles an egg.
Features experts examine
- Surface texture or ornamentation on preserved shell.
- Thin, brittle shell fragments rather than a solid, uniformly mineralized pebble.
- Regular pore patterns in the shell.
- Internal crystalline structure visible in a naturally exposed fragment or a prepared laboratory section.
- Geologic setting and associated fossils, including possible embryo material.
These clues help characterize eggshell, but they are not a do-it-yourself certainty test. Even a genuine fossil eggshell may not reveal which animal laid it. More specific attribution is sometimes possible when embryo remains or other diagnostic material are associated with the shell.
Do not crack open a concretion
Opening a concretion is destructive and can erase evidence, reduce scientific value, or damage a protected specimen. Do not use a hammer, saw, chisel, acid, wire brush, household cleaner, or water to test the object. An expert can decide whether any preparation is justified and how to document it first.

How to request an identification
Send photographs and context before offering to mail or deliver the specimen. Many institutions can decide whether a find warrants an in-person examination from images alone.
Prepare the information
- State the general location, including the state, province, or country and the nearest named area. Provide exact coordinates privately when the institution or land manager requests them.
- Explain whether the object is on public or private land, and identify the land manager if known.
- Give the date of discovery and describe whether it was embedded, partly exposed, or loose.
- Attach sharp overall and close-up photographs from multiple angles. Include a separate scale object when convenient and safe.
- Describe the surrounding rock, sediment, bedding, shell fragments, or other fossils without claiming an identification.
- Say whether the object was accidentally moved. If it was, report its original position as accurately as possible and do not clean or alter it.
Possible institutional routes
The Florida Museum provides a free identification route for Florida fossil finds and asks for clear images and scale information. The University of Colorado Museum offers educational fossil identification from a photograph and general location. Follow each institution’s current submission instructions and understand that a photograph-based opinion may remain provisional.
A museum or survey may refer you to a specialist, request additional images, or ask the land manager to handle the specimen. That referral is normal: eggshell identification can require microscopy, thin sections, comparison with reference collections, or examination of the site.
If you already picked it up
Do not try to undo the mistake by returning it on your own, washing it, or putting it back in a different position. Place it on a clean, stable surface away from vibration and keep every fragment and bit of surrounding sediment together. Write down the exact spot, orientation, and time of removal while you still remember them. Contact the land manager promptly and explain exactly what happened so they can direct the next step.
If the object is wet, crumbling, or shedding shell, avoid wrapping it tightly or applying adhesive. Ask the receiving authority how it should be stabilized and transported. The safest handling method depends on the material and local rules.
What not to do
- Do not excavate around the object to make it look more complete.
- Do not move it to your car, home, or a different rock surface for photographs.
- Do not crack, cut, polish, acid-test, glue, or chemically clean it.
- Do not advertise precise coordinates or invite unqualified collecting at the site.
- Do not assume that a loose object is legal to keep.
- Do not ship it across a border or sell it before checking ownership, heritage, export, and permit rules.
- Do not treat a social-media identification as legal permission or a scientific determination.
A simple decision path
- Pause: Leave the suspected egg or eggshell and its setting untouched.
- Document: Photograph the scene and close details; record date, general location, land status, and geology.
- Protect sensitive information: Share exact coordinates privately with the responsible authority.
- Report: Tell a national-park ranger or the appropriate public-land manager. On private land, notify the owner.
- Request expertise: Send photographs and context to a nearby museum, geological survey, or university paleontology department.
- Wait for written or explicit direction: Collect, transport, donate, or retain nothing until the authority explains what is allowed.
What a responsible outcome looks like
The best result is not necessarily taking the object home. A well-documented specimen left in place can preserve information about its rock layer and surrounding fossils, while an illegally removed or damaged object may lose both scientific value and legal status. A ranger, land manager, or qualified paleontologist can determine whether the find is a concretion, eggshell, another fossil, or an object requiring protected-site treatment—and can tell you what may happen next.
