Contact the radio manufacturer and request the reset or reprogramming procedure for your exact VHF model. Do not assume the number can be edited in the normal menu. The U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center says an owner with an incorrect stored MMSI must contact the manufacturer; some radios can be corrected without removal, while others require an authorized service center or a return to the manufacturer.
First confirm the correct MMSI from your vessel-registration record. Then give the support team the radio’s make, exact model and serial number. Do not invent a number, try an undocumented key sequence or transmit a distress alert to test the radio.
What do I do if I entered the wrong MMSI in my VHF radio?
- Stop relying on the radio for DSC identity functions. A wrong stored number can attach the wrong identity to digital selective calling (DSC) transmissions.
- Record the equipment details. Write down the manufacturer, exact model designation and serial number. Photograph the identification label if it is difficult to access later.
- Confirm the intended MMSI. Use the certificate, registration account or other record from the organization that issued the number. Do not guess or substitute a personal telephone number.
- Contact the manufacturer or its authorized marine-radio service route. Ask specifically for the “own-ship MMSI reset” or “MMSI reprogramming” procedure for your model.
- Follow the model-specific service instructions. Support may provide an authorized local service option, tell you how to make the correction at the vessel, or require the unit to be removed and returned.
- Verify the result before operating normally. After the reset, display the stored own-ship MMSI and compare every digit with the registration record.
The Navigation Center summarizes the requirement this way: “You must contact the manufacturer about the MMSI reset process.” International agreements are the reason ordinary users generally cannot change a stored identity freely; the Coast Guard says changing it should require an authorized user working with the manufacturer.

Can I change the MMSI number in my radio?
Usually, not through the ordinary setup menu. Manufacturers deliberately restrict changes because an MMSI is a vessel identity used by DSC and, on applicable equipment, related maritime communications. A casual menu edit could leave a vessel with an identity that does not match its registration or could create confusion during an emergency.

The exact remedy varies by make and model. The Coast Guard notes that some corrections can be made without removing the radio, but it does not publish one universal button sequence or reset code. Do not apply instructions written for another brand, even if the radios appear to have similar menus.
What Garmin’s published example means
Garmin gives one specific example rather than a rule for every manufacturer: “If the MMSI number was entered incorrectly or changed for any reason, the radio will require reprogramming that must be completed by an authorized service center or returned to Garmin for reprogramming.” Treat that as a Garmin model-family instruction only. It does not establish that every VHF radio must be shipped back, nor that every other manufacturer uses the same process.
Will I have to send my VHF radio back?
Possibly, but there is no universal answer. The service path is determined by the radio’s firmware, model, national approval requirements and the manufacturer’s policy.

Ask support four practical questions before disconnecting anything: must the radio be removed; where should it be serviced or shipped; which proof of ownership or registration is needed; and can the correct MMSI be entered immediately after the reset? The available official guidance does not establish a standard fee, processing time or documentation package.
Why the wrong stored MMSI matters
A DSC radio uses its stored own-ship identity in digital calls. When a distress button is pressed, search-and-rescue authorities use the MMSI registration record to identify the vessel and retrieve associated details. If the radio transmits another vessel’s number, an incomplete number or an identity that no longer matches the registration, responders may receive misleading information.
Correcting the radio and maintaining the registration record are separate tasks. Changing an online or paper registration does not automatically rewrite the number stored in the radio. The same principle applies to AIS: vessel details are programmed into the AIS equipment, and the equipment must be reprogrammed when it is moved to another boat.

Do not send a test distress alert. A test transmission can create a real response and is not a substitute for confirming the displayed identity through the manufacturer’s procedure.

What if I pressed the distress button with the wrong MMSI?
This is a different and more urgent situation from merely discovering a programming error. If the distress function actually transmitted, follow the radio’s cancellation procedure immediately.
- Use the radio’s distress-alert cancellation menu. Follow the instructions for the exact set.
- Do not power the radio off before cancelling. The U.S. Coast Guard’s accidental-alert guidance calls for cancellation while the radio remains operating.
- Notify other stations on Channel 16. State that an inadvertent distress alert was sent, give the vessel name and correct MMSI if known, and provide your position so the alert can be associated with the right vessel.
- Notify the Coast Guard or the responsible maritime authority as directed. Continue listening on Channel 16 for instructions.
If you only typed the wrong number into a programming screen and no distress alert was transmitted, this cancellation sequence is not called for by the cited guidance. Proceed with the manufacturer reset instead.

How to confirm the correct MMSI before reprogramming
United States recreational vessels
For recreational vessels that remain in U.S. waters and are not required to carry a marine radio, the Coast Guard says approved organizations can issue an MMSI. Except for certain equipment such as some handhelds, radios on the same vessel should use the same MMSI. The Coast Guard emphasizes: “MMSI belongs with the vessel, not the user.”
Check the account or certificate held by the issuing organization. If the boat changed owners, was renamed, or received a different registration, verify that the record reflects the current vessel before asking the manufacturer to program anything.
Vessels travelling internationally
The U.S. recreational-boat arrangement is not a universal international rule. The Coast Guard says an owner planning to sail to a foreign country needs an FCC ship-station license and must replace an existing own-ship MMSI with the FCC-issued one. The manufacturer must be contacted for instructions on deleting the existing identity.

International operators should check the radio-licensing authority for the vessel’s flag or state, operating area and equipment. Requirements can differ by jurisdiction, vessel category and whether the radio is fixed, portable or part of an AIS installation.
United Kingdom operating context
The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s small-boat GMDSS procedures are a separate national reference. That guidance, updated 24 July 2024, includes maintaining a listening watch on Channel 16. Its licensing and operating instructions apply to the UK context and should not be presented as a worldwide replacement for the rules of the vessel’s own authority.

- Serial number and, if requested, firmware version.
- The incorrect MMSI currently displayed or stored.
- The verified MMSI you need programmed.
- Country of registration and the authority or organization that issued the number.
- Whether the radio is installed in a fixed console, integrated with AIS, or being moved to another vessel.
- Whether a distress alert was ever transmitted. Say clearly if no alert was sent.
Ask the representative to confirm whether the unit can remain installed, whether an authorized technician is required, how the service is initiated and what verification should be performed after reprogramming. Keep the case number and service instructions with the vessel documents.
After the reset: checks that prevent a second error
- Open the radio’s identity or DSC information screen and read the entire stored MMSI.
- Compare it digit by digit with the issuing organization’s record.
- Check that the vessel name, call sign, contact details and emergency information in the registration record are current.
- If the radio is connected to AIS or other networked equipment, confirm that each device carries the appropriate vessel information.
- Review the owner’s manual for the normal DSC calling and cancellation controls; do not press the distress key as a test.
- Record the date of reprogramming, service provider and any authorization number for future ownership or equipment changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Trying a guessed reset code: A code from an online forum may belong to a different model and can lock the unit or create another identity problem. Use the manufacturer’s documented route.
- Assuming registration changes rewrite the radio: They do not. The stored identity must be corrected in the equipment itself.
- Replacing a working radio unnecessarily: The cited guidance identifies reset or reprogramming routes; it does not show that a new radio is generally required.
- Using a GPS accessory as a fix: GPS can provide position input, but it does not correct an MMSI stored in the radio.
- Applying U.S. instructions abroad: MMSI licensing depends on jurisdiction, vessel status and travel plans. Confirm the rule with the relevant national authority.
- Confusing a programming error with a transmitted alert: Only an actual accidental distress transmission requires the immediate cancellation and Channel 16 notification procedure.
When the correct number still will not appear
If the radio continues to show the old identity after an authorized reset, stop making DSC calls and reopen the service case. Provide photographs of the identity screen, the service paperwork and the registration record. Ask whether another connected unit is displaying its own stored MMSI rather than the VHF’s value, and whether the radio requires a power cycle or a second verification step specified by the manufacturer. Do not repeatedly attempt undocumented resets.
Once the displayed number matches the vessel’s authoritative registration and any required service confirmation is complete, the radio can return to normal use. Keep the registration contact details current so responders can use the MMSI record if a real emergency occurs.
